Promotional items are cross-promotional items available in Team Fortress 2 through Valve's marketing partnerships with other video game companies, as well as through their own games. They are made available through a variety of ways, all of which are linked to Steam and TF2.

Preorder items are usually only available for a limited time. A TF2 blog update is always posted with details on what the promotion is, and how to acquire the preorder items.

Other items are available through means such as achievements, like Alien Swarm, earning them through gameplay, as in Poker Night at the Inventory, or, in the case of the Earbuds, by logging into TF2 through other operating systems.

With the exception of the items earned through gameplay, these items are no longer earnable, and can only be acquired through trading or gifting.
