Revision as of 21:42, 14 October 2020

This project aims to clean up the File: namespace in a storm of recent edits. It is both a cure for the messy namespace, and prevention to stop it getting to a similar state again.

There are several sub-projects involved in the main storm.

You could earn yourself a GOLDEN PDA.

Deletion of unused and unusable content

Aims

  1. Pictogram tick.png Under control Add unused files to relevant pages or delete them;
  2. Pictogram tick.png Under control Delete unusable content;
  3. Pictogram wait.png In progress Delete duplicate content (preserving higher quality content where possible);
  4. Pictogram tick.png Under control Maintain the files on the unused files page on the Wiki.

Notes

  • Unused concept art should not be deleted (these files will be added to a new page).
  • Sound responses (such as File:Demoman_headleft02.wav) appear on the Special:UnusedFiles page because they are directly linked. They are all used on the Wiki and should not be deleted.
  • Only uncontroversial deletions should occur. For images that may require outside input, add them to the gallery of questionable images below and they will be discussed.
  • Images should ideally find a home in an article. The majority will not.

How you can help

Users

  • Please take a look at Special:UnusedFiles and mark files, that you do not feel aid Team Fortress Wiki, for deletion using the Delete-media template. Please provide accurate reasons for deletion.
  • Some articles or templates use externally resized versions that are duplicates of other files on Team Fortress Wiki. Please update them.
    • This can be done within the [[Image]] tags. Just add a switch. [[Image:Dominating.png|20px]] will resize the Dominating image down to 20px wide without requiring an alternative file, like so: Dominating.png
    • Most likely after updating, these files will need a {{Template:Delete-request}} placed on them with the reason "duplicate".

Moderators

  • Please browse Category:Media marked for deletion and delete as appropriate. If you feel that the image should stay, remove the {{delete-media}} tag, and either add the image to a page or the gallery below.

Gallery of indeterminate deletability

This is a list of files that may not be worthy of deletion, but may otherwise fit the criteria. Contributions to this list will be discussed and dealt with by the community.

Categorisation of media

Aims

  1. Pictogram wait.png In progress Have every media file categorised into at least 2 categories;
  2. Pictogram wait.png In progress Introduce more and intuitive image categories;
  3. Pictogram tick.png Done Have the image categories themselves categorised (see: Special:UncategorizedCategories);
  4. Pictogram wait.png In progress Maintain the files on the Special:UncategorizedFiles page on the Wiki.

Additional aims

  1. Pictogram cross.png Not done Have a defined convention for categorisation
  2. Pictogram cross.png Not done Making sure new uploaders are familiar with these categorisation conventions
  3. Pictogram tick.png Under control Making sure new uploads are consistent with these categorisation conventions

Notes

  • Files should not be over- or under-categorised. Most images should belong to at least two categories, plus an additional category based on its license.
  • For files that can't yet be added to at least one category, first:
    • Triple check the file does not have a home, then;
    • Place them in the gallery below OR
    • Create a category for the file (ensuring you aren't creating a duplicate).

Image naming conventions

Aims

  1. Pictogram cross.png Not done Establishing a naming convention for uploaded files;
  2. Pictogram wait.png In progress {{move}}ing existing images, where practical, to conform with existing conventions;
  3. Pictogram cross.png Not done Making sure new uploaders are familiar with the naming convention;
  4. Pictogram tick.png Under control Making sure new uploads are consistent with the naming convention.

Notes

  • This project cannot be fully realised before establishing a naming convention for uploaded files.
  • There are existing naming conventions (such backpack icons beginning with Backpack_). These should be written down so they are finite.

How you can help

  • Mark images that do not follow existing naming conventions with the {{move}} template.
  • Assist in updating links to moved images using Special:WhatLinksHere.

Image licensing

Aims

  1. Pictogram tick.png Done Introduce new licensing templates that more accurately describe the media they apply to;
  2. Pictogram wait.png In progress Ensuring all images include licensing information.

Notes

  • This project cannot be fully realised before the introduction of new licensing templates.
  • If the images' current license is incorrect it must be removed, even if there is not another one to replace it (yet).

How you can help

  • Update all images without a license to include one.
  • Update all images that use the {{ScreenshotTF2}} which are not actual screenshots of Team Fortress 2.
  • Update all images that use a generally incorrect license.
  • Suggest new licensing categories on the talk page.
