Bonk! is fulla radiation, which as we all know is pretty great for givin' people superpowers.
Bonk! Atomic Punch publicity blurb

Bonk! Atomic Punch is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Scout. It is a canned energy drink with a team-appropriate label; RED's flavor of Bonk! is "Cherry Fission", while BLU's is "Blutonium Berry".

Upon ingestion, Bonk! Atomic Punch renders the player invulnerable for 8 seconds. During this time, the player is forced into third-person mode and may not attack with any weapon, being limited to actions such as moving, jumping, and reloading their weapons, with a blurry trail following them. While invulnerable, most things that would normally hurt the Scout instead produce a "Miss!" signal above his head, followed by one of many voice responses. A Scout cannot use Bonk! while carrying the Intelligence, or grab the Intelligence while still under the drink's effects. Scouts under the effects of Bonk! can neither capture nor defend objectives such as control points or Payload carts. The player has unlimited Bonk! cans at their disposal, but cannot take out another can until the item's cooldown period, shown in the HUD, is over. The effects of Bonk! cease if a Scout using it activates a Resupply locker.

While under the effects of Bonk!, the player is immune to almost all forms of damage, including direct damage, residual damage, self-inflicted damage, and fall damage. Damage-over-time effects, such as afterburn and bleeding, do not deal damage for the duration of the Bonk! effect, but continue when the drink wears off. However, on-hit effects (such as the Ubersaw's +25% ÜberCharge on hit) still take place if they are not based on the amount of damage dealt (such as the Buff Banner's rage meter), and Bonk! provides no protection from knockback, environmental damage, or telefrags.

After the effect ends, the player receives a 5-second slowdown based on the amount of damage they absorbed while invulnerable. The slow effect scales from 25% at low damage up to 50% after absorbing 200+ damage. The Baby Face's Blaster does not affect the slowdown penalty.

As the process of drinking Bonk! is considered a taunt, it cannot be consumed in instances when taunts cannot be used, such as when underwater. If a Scout who is in the process of drinking Bonk! is propelled into the air by knockback, the drinking animation is cancelled, though this still counts as consumption and drains the recharge meter as such.

While under the influence of Bonk!, the player can still taunt and, by extension, gain kills by using the Home Run kill taunt.

Bonk! Atomic Punch is automatically given to any player who obtains 22 Scout achievements.

Bugs

  • If the player commits suicide while under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch, the kill is awarded to the last player on the enemy team who dealt damage (using a weapon) against the original player, even if their character was temporarily invincible at the time the damage was taken.
  • Despite being unable to capture a control point while under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch, if a Scout is standing on the point when it's captured, the Scout still receives points for the capture.
  • If a Scout is knocked into the air while the taunt is in play, the Scout consumes the Bonk! Atomic Punch, but no effect is applied.
  • After the Bonk! Atomic Punch slowness effect takes place, it is possible to retain original speed by pressing the left and right buttons repetitively.
  • The stun effect after taking damage counts towards the "Brushback" achievement.

Trivia

  • Bonk! Atomic Punch cans use a pull-tab opening mechanism, first invented in 1956, as opposed to a stay-on-tab mechanism, which was popularized in the 1970s and is used on most canned beverages nowadays.
  • An active adult's daily recommended sugar intake is around 90 grams. Assuming the contents of Bonk! Atomic Punch are as advertised – the drink is said to contain several hundred times the daily recommended amount – the can of Bonk! would weigh at least 9 kilograms.
  • The labels for Bonk! Atomic Punch and Crit-a-Cola list the ingredients as water, radiation, and sugar. Several lines of random letters also appear on the label itself.
    • The tagline for the RED team's "Cherry Fission" flavor is "Now with ISOTOPES!", while the tagline for the BLU team's "Blutonium Berry" flavor is "Now with 33% MORE REAL Radiation!".
  • According to the Bonk Leadwear's description, Bonk was invented in 1932 by the American soft drink magnate Theophilus Bonk, and it was made of zinc, ammonium chloride, molten salt, and sugar.
  • In the comic Grave Matters, an advertisement for Bonk can be seen, as well as an advertisement for the unused model of the Bottle, Blu Streak.
  • The label on the RED Festive Bonk reads "Nuclear Winter Wonderland". Nuclear winter is a hypothetical outcome of nuclear war breaking out, which states that resulting fallout, firestorms, and/or airborne debris would bring about rapid climate change and potentially a new ice age.
  • The label on the BLU Festive Bonk reads "It's the Reasium for the Caesium", which is a play on words of the saying "reason for the season" and the element caesium, which is liquid just above room temperature, can combust on contact with air (and explodes on contact with liquid water), and an isotope of which, caesium-137, is radioactive and present in nuclear fallout.
