— Degreaser publicity blurb
|
” |
The Degreaser is a community-created primary weapon for the Pyro. It is a makeshift flamethrower comprised of a gas pump, a car muffler, an exhaust pipe, a team-colored fire extinguisher, and a stove top burner.
The Degreaser reduces the delay caused by weapon switching from or to this weapon. Specifically, it takes 60% less time to switch to the Degreaser and 30% less time to switch away, which facilitates strategic use of weapon combos. However, damage caused by afterburn damage is reduced by 66%.
The Degreaser, like the Flame Thrower, Backburner, Rainblower, and Dragon's Fury, has the compression blast ability. However, using the compression blast costs 25 ammo instead of the default Flame Thrower's 20.
Afterburn reduces healing and shield resists from a Medi Gun by 20%.
The kill icon for the Degreaser was contributed by Psyke .

- Note: Because of base damage increase by 10%, damage remains unchanged.
- [Undocumented] Added Collector's quality.
December 17, 2015 Patch (Tough Break Update)
- The base Flamethrower's damage fall off over distance has been decreased, resulting in higher damage output at range.
- Extinguishing a teammate will now return 20 health to the Pyro.
- Changed attributes:
- No longer boosts all-around switch speed (previously was 65% all-around). Instead, boosts switch-to speed by 60% and switch-from speed by 30%.
- Removed damage penalty.
- Increased Airblast cost by 25%.
- Increased afterburn penalty from 25% to 66%.
- Changed attribute:
- [Undocumented] Updated 20 health restoration when used to extinguish a burning teammate from neutral attribute to positive attribute.
July 7, 2016 Patch (Meet Your Match Update)

- Medics hear a "healing interrupted" sound when this is happening to their heal target.
October 20, 2017 Patch (Jungle Inferno Update)
- Flamethrowers no longer apply maximum-duration afterburn on contact. Afterburn duration is now based on how long the target is in contact with direct flames.
- Better visual sync, more consistent (no visuals/damage mismatch).
- New particle effects.
- Airblast
- Hit detection for both players and projectiles is now a consistent cone.
- Airblasting players now factors in the momentum of the Pyro and target, giving both more control over the interaction.
- Airblast now causes target player to have reduced footing and air control for a short period.
- Now factors in the upward angle of the airblast, rather than having a fixed upward force.
- Total push force slightly increased.
- Fixed flamethrowers not damaging buildings at close distance.
- Fixed not seeing the new flamethrower effects on some machines.
December 21, 2017 Patch (Smissmas 2017)
- Added Festivized variant.
- Flame damage per second now ramps up based on density of flame encountered, up to 200%.
- Initial flame damage per second reduced by 50%, resulting in the max damage being unchanged.
- Fixed Flamethrower particles sometimes failing to draw on the client.
- Fixed Flamethrower flames not colliding with
tf_generic_bomb
entities.
March 28, 2018 Patch #2
- Fixed a server crash related to the Flamethrower.
Bugs
- Rarely, when the Degreaser is turned off during full crits, the flame effect can still be seen. Unlike a similar bug with the Minigun, the "flame" can only be seen by the player.
- The attribute -66% afterburn damage penalty also applies to any reflected projectile's afterburn such as Flare Gun, despite it normally doing full afterburn damage.
- If the Degreaser is deployed for less than half of a second, the player does not receive the holster bonus after switching off to another weapon.
- The Degreaser can be inspected while being fired.
Trivia
- Degreasers are emulsifying agents used to remove heavy oils and grease; since flames consume fats easily, it can be called a literal type of "degreaser".
- Degreasers are a notorious fire hazard, and through the 1960s, gasoline stored in covered basins was the standard degreaser used when repairing cars at gas stations.
