All items have an assigned origin. Origin determines the way of how the item was given to the player and always connected with the current owner's backpack.

An item may only have one assigned origin at a time, which cannot be altered except through certain circumstances by Valve.

The names of the various origins are defined in the game files.

Name Example Description
Timed Drop Spirit of Giving, Primeval Warrior, Golden Wrench, randomly dropped items This origin will be flagged, if the item was found by random drop or gained as a limited-time event item (for example, TF Birthday or Winter Holidays), usually mentioned in blog posts and available to all players. The only limit here is the time.
Achievement Iron Curtain, 'Fish', Full Head of Steam This origin will be flagged, if the item was gained by completing the necessary achievement in TF2 (or another game).
Purchased World Traveler's Hat, Key, everything purchasable in the Mann Co Store This origin will be flagged, if the item was purchased/bought in Mann Co Store.
Traded Vintage Flaregun, Strange Powerjack, Genuine Maul,Key, Refined Metal This origin will be flagged, if the item was taken via Trading.
Crafted Refined Metal, random Hat This origin will be flagged, if the item was created by a craft.
Store Promotion Mann Co. Cap, The Jag This origin will be flagged, if the item was gained by purchasing the items in Mann Co Store and if there is a promotion in Mann Co Store (for example, the 1st purchased item).
Gifted Seal Mask, Manniversary Paper Hat, Steel Pipes This origin will be flagged, if the item was gifted to the player after the box is opened (from another player or from VALVe)
Support Granted Usually, any achievement or steam purchased item This origin will be flagged, if the item was given by the Steam Support after the user has been helped with his/her problem of gaining the necessary item (eg., the player has deleted the item by an accident). Or if VALVe want to give a special item to a special person (eg., Community Item or Self-Made).
Found in Crate Napper's Respite This origin will be flagged, if the item was found by opening the crate
Earned Professor Speks, Dueling Badge, Dueling Mini-Game This origin will be flagged, if the item was given by completing certain in-game conditions (not achievement). (For example, if you have won 10 duels.)
Third-Party Promotion Bounty Hat, Ebenezer, Lo-Fi Longwave, Wiki Cap, Earbuds, tournament medals This origin will be flagged, if the item was given by participating/winning in the Third-Party Promotion (can be found in the table of the Promotional Items, part "Events").
Wrapped Gift A Carefully Wrapped Gift This origin will be flagged for the Wrapped Gift, taken from another player (gifter).
Halloween-Drop Haunted Futankhamun, Silver Bullets This origin is used for the Halloween 2011 items only (Haunted and Unique items from the Haunted Halloween Gifts).
Steam Purchase Genuine items, Foster's Facade, Proof of Purchase, Superfan, Summer Shades This origin is used for the items, gained by purchasing the games, which include promotional items, or by participating in the certain of the Steam Promotion.
Foreign Item ??? ???
CD Key Genuine Killer Exclusive, Genuine Righteous Bison This origin will be flagged, if the item is added by entering the CD Key in Steam.
Collection Reward ??? ???
Preview Item Any item from the Mann Co Store This origin is connected to the item, taken for the limited-time only in Mann Co Store.
Steam Workshop Contribution Self-Made Brown Bomber Items, which are approved in Steam Workshop, have this origin (previously approved self-made items have the "Support Granted" origin, if they were added before the Steam Workshop was implemented).
Unknown Dueler Periodical hats have this kind of origin.
