— The Heavy on his new-found weapons
|
” |
Weapons are varying items that are used in combat, executing special taunts, or are reskins for the player to admire. Most classes have three weapon slots, a primary, secondary, and melee slot. The Engineer has an additional PDA slot (for the Construction/Destruction PDA). The Spy has no primary weapon, but has a PDA (Disguise Kit), PDA 2 (invisibility watches), and Building slot (sappers). Weapons are given to players as random drops, by crafting, by completing achievements, uncrating crates or trading, and may carry a special item quality. Weapons can be changed in the Loadout menu, and can be inspected from the Backpack menu.

Inspecting
Inspecting was added in the Gun Mettle Update (and improved in the Jungle Inferno Update) to give the player the ability to view details on their weapons in-game. Almost all weapons can be inspected (except Engineer's PDAs, Spy's Disguise Kit, the Thermal Thruster, and passive weapons, such as the B.A.S.E. Jumper, Gunboats, Mantreads, Razorback, Darwin's Danger Shield, Cozy Camper, Demoman's booties and shields).
In-game, using the inspection key (default key: F) when the weapon is in an idle state plays an animation of the player inspecting the weapon by looking at all sides before returning to the idle state. This animation is only visible to the player and spectators in first person. There is no corresponding third-person animation, and thus the inspection is not seen by other players. The animation gradually and temporarily disables minimal viewmodels while it is being played.
The player can perform normal actions with the weapon at any point during the animation (such as reloading, firing, scoping in, or switching to other weapons), immediately interrupting the inspection animation to perform the normal action.
Weapons cannot be inspected unless the weapon is idle. Inspecting a weapon while it is being reloaded interrupts and pauses the reloading process. After the inspection is finished (without being canceled by firing), the reload animation resumes.
Bugs
- Weapons can be inspected when they are being deployed or in action (e.g. firing, reloading or zooming in with Sniper rifles), despite not being idle.
- The sounds that are played when inspecting a weapon may play again if the player presses the inspect key during the animation.
- The inspection animations sometimes do not interpolate properly and start again instantly.
- With the Spy, if the player uses any Invis Watch at the start of the inspection animation, it causes
tf_use_min_viewmodels
to not be gradually set to 0, and the weapon abruptly exits from the minimal viewmodel state. This does not occur when the animation is finishing and the bug persists until the player changes class. - The inspection animation is affected by lag, starting late or behaving laggy at higher latencies.

Bugs
- Sometimes lighting can make some weapons appear differently, such as making them appear orange, purple, or shiny.
- Picking up weapons that have particle effects attached to it (Community Sparkle or Unusual effects) causes the wearer's hat to get out of sync (if the hat goes into the
bip_head
bone), similar to the bug for the Genteel Smoke effect, though this can be easily fixed by simply switching off weapons.
Notes
Before the Tough Break Update, when switching between weapons, there was a 0.67 (2/3) second delay before the new weapon could be fired. Some weapons could change the delay while equipped, which was applied to all weapons equipped at the time:
- The Degreaser decreased this time by 65%, to 0.23 (7/30) seconds.
- The Reserve Shooter decreased this time by 15%, to 0.57 (17/30) seconds.
- The Reserve Shooter and the Degreaser together decreased this time by 70.25%, to 0.1983 (119/600) seconds.
- The Fists of Steel increased this time by 20%, to 0.8 seconds.
The Tough Break Update reduced the weapon switch time from 0.67 (2/3) seconds to 0.5 seconds. All weapons that previously increased or decreased the switch speed across all equipped weapons now only affect switching to or from that specific weapon:
- The Panic Attack deploys 50% faster, deploying in 0.25 seconds.
- The Reserve Shooter deploys 20% faster, deploying in 0.4 seconds.
- All weapons that are classified as swords (bar the Three-Rune Blade) deploy 100% slower and holster 100% slower, both deploying and holstering in 1 second.
- Switching from the Reserve Shooter to the Half-Zatoichi takes 1 second.
- Switching from the Half-Zatoichi to the Reserve Shooter takes 0.8 seconds.
- The Degreaser deploys 60% faster and holsters 30% faster, deploying in 0.2 seconds and holstering in 0.35 seconds.
- The Axtinguisher holsters 35% slower, holstering in 0.675 seconds.
- Switching from the Degreaser to the Reserve Shooter takes 0.25 seconds.
- Switching from the Reserve Shooter to the Degreaser takes 0.2 seconds.
- Switching from the Axtinguisher to the Degreaser takes 0.375 seconds.
- The Gloves of Running Urgently holster 50% slower, holstering in 0.75 seconds.
- The Fists of Steel holster 100% slower, holstering in 1 second.
Due to odd quirks of the item system, some weapons display in different slots:
- The Spy's secondary slot is displayed where the primary slot for the other classes appear.
- The Sapper appears where the secondary slot for the other classes appear for purposes of weapon switching.
- The Spy's PDA2 slot is displayed as PDA.
These quirks do not affect gameplay, but have a bearing on crafting blueprints.
