I just looked at [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/File:Tough_Guy%27s_Toque_RED_3D.jpg the first hat finished for the 3D Models project], and I have to say that I'm not really sure this is how it should be done. The hat alone doesn't give you a good idea of how it would look on the Heavy. Considering that hats are purely cosmetic, an accurate visual example of how it looks in-game is pretty important.
 
 
 
Before the project goes forward any further, I think that hats and misc items should be shown in these 3D boxes as they appear in-game; on the characters. I'm not sure how much extra work it would take to do this, but seeing as the wiki has always put quality before ease I think it should at the very least be considered. :I would say we ignore the unused Red versions of the robots, with the giant variants they're all the same just scaled up with different animations, Romevision bots would be pretty solid though same for gatebots, but when it comes to the unique bots like the ones that wear certain cosmetics, I don't think it would be worth adding those since it would most likely add over 20 3D buttons for the page. However, unique bosses like Sergeant Crits wouldn't be a bad idea to put on their respective page as they're a major boss in the mission. There hasn't been a discussion started on these, but one for the ghost and sawblade have already been made. I personally think that not every hazard needs a 3D model. Sure it's nice, but the Sawblade has nothing interesting about it and the Train is simply too large to notice any detail on it. For all/multi-class taunts, I am fairly certain we can do an example for each class if we keep the buttons as half pairs, except for the Spy which would be a full-sized button on the bottom. But the issue with this is a taunt like the Cheers!, which contains 9 props too. It basically involves a template with a premade camera, anchor point, and custom loading models in via SFM, attaching the object model to the dummy model, and then rotating the dummy model as a new pseudo vertex. Additionally, people don't have to have SFM on their computer, they only need TF2 and then to download a few things that don't take up that much space. SFM, meanwhile, looks like it's a 15GB download (or at least, it takes up 15GB of space once downloaded), which isn't feasible for some people due to either limited hard drive space or limited downloads. The flat lighting of HLMV is preferable to actually show items and so on, as it gives a cleaner appearance of the item. It's hard to say that the lighting in SFM would be more like the game lighting, as there are many different environments for lighting. It's not just the 3D images that are done in HLMV either, all the paint images and infobox images are done in HLMV. Having one set of images done in SFM and all the other images done in HLMV would just make them look odd and inconsistent. And honestly, in that image you linked, the HLMV shot looks a lot cleaner and shows the details of the weapon easier, the SFM one makes it a lot darker, which makes it harder to see details on the darker areas. So I've downloaded all the bunch, configured the automatebeta.py and the phython files does nothing. First of all, I can't even use the phython.exe properly to navigate to the file (it always gives me "SyntaxError"), so I drag and drop the file into the phython in order to try. And, oh yea. I had to set-up HLMV to manually find the gameinfo.txt file via a shortcut. My HLMV only works with this extra line: "E:\Jogos\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\bin\hlmv.exe" -game "E:\Jogos\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf", this is because I had to reinstall my PC and I haven't reinstalled my Steam and games, which in this occasion, no registry keys exists for the paths. I don't know if that affects in some way. I've followed the tutorial on the project page, I haven't read the whole file in details. I may also get the ROT and TRANS from the old 3D Image Soldier that had the Marketing Pose pose. Thanks. Valve have updated some of the default textures for the Stock weapons to accommodate the new Decorate system. Perhaps every stock weapon that has at least 1 decorated skin has been changed. For example, the [[Flamethrower]] RED/BLU area is now more dark and it has $envmap applied to it, the [[Stickybomb Launcher]] reload handle is more brighter, the [[Medi Gun]] doesn't have low-quality textures on the healing beam whole (it seems to be polygons now, not just a texture), and etc. I still have the old texture files, so I'll compare them, but it's pretty much confirmed that those textures got updated, but I think we should do every of those weapons just in case (even the smallest detail). And I'm pretty sure that the Australium and Botkiller variants were also updated (since it uses the main weapon for it). The Festives that has lights as a separate model does also count. I may do these soon. :::I managed to compile it to x64, as a "Release" version. It seems to be executing, but when I run the {{code|mem trans}} command, it always states {{code|0.000000 0.000000 0.200000}}. I attempted recompiling the older version with the default solution (I had to download Visual Studio 2019 compilers). The only thing now is that since Python3 doesn't support wikitools and poster, it seems I'm stuck. The file temp.jpg does work, but I don't have the "map", "height" and "startframe" values because the program crashes at here: [https://imgur.com/a/KhIFg6E https://imgur.com/a/KhIFg6E]. I'm also not really sure if I know as to why the {{code|mem trans}} part is required, it states on {{code|automate.py}} that {{code|# Initial parameters. Mostly, you won't need to set these}}. Infoboxes are much more complicated than most other templates, copy-pasting won't always work. I would leave it to more experienced users.

We have been discussing this topic a little bit on the IRC, and everyone seems to agree. We must need robot 3d images, and I already created one for the Tank Robot. Please say yes!

The issue is more of which ones we're going to create. The idea itself is good and can pass, but the specifics of which robots we're going to create (obviously default and romevision ones). Are we going to add ones with different cosmetics? Are we going to add bosses? Are we going to add Gatebot variants? Are we going to add ÜberCharged versions? Are we going to add the unused RED textures?

The infobox that the robots already use ({{Class infobox}}) does not have the right views. The point would be that the Robot infobox would be less complicated.

I'm a tad late, but I'd advocate for showing at least all of the models you'd encounter while playing the vanilla missions -- especially Gatebots, which are actively a different mechanic, the same as UberCharging is.
Giants are mostly just larger robot models, (except for having a different head,) but they do have their own model -- and the frequency at which you see a Giant shouldn't be ignored, in terms of showcasing its model, I think. They're not entirely just scaled up regular robots, and if we already go into details for the 3D Model Project such as showcasing different components of weapons like the Buff Banner, or the several different variants of stock weapons that exist now, like the Minigun, I don't think the amount of toggleable buttons, nor the space they take up, is an issue here. I agree that we should focus on BLU skin models, since that's what the official game mode uses, the RED skin can stay as a gallery image, or something similar, if preferred -- but I think if we're going to showcase every reasonable thing, it should be:
  • Normal
  • Giant
  • Gatebot (there are only five types of Giant Gatebot in official missions, so we can have only regular robot Gatebot models, if we need to)
  • Romevision (we could include Giants here, Romevision cosmetics are just scaled up on Giants to match their body size, up to consensus)
  • UberCharged variants of the above
  • Normal Tank + 3 damaged states + final variants
  • Romevision Tank + 3 damaged states + final variants
That would equal out to somewhere around eight on each of the robots' pages, and sixteen boxes on the Tank page, if we wanted to include them all on one article. It's a fair bit of work, but not unreasonable in terms of real estate. We already have eight boxes on the Buff Banner page, and eighteen on the Minigun page. It sounds like a lot as a number, but it isn't that much infobox clutter. We don't need to have different ones for robot types that wear cosmetics; just like the base class models, I think we should focus on showcasing the default models.

I would say we ignore the unused Red versions of the robots, with the giant variants they're all the same just scaled up with different animations, Romevision bots would be pretty solid though same for gatebots, but when it comes to the unique bots like the ones that wear certain cosmetics, I don't think it would be worth adding those since it would most likely add over 20 3D buttons for the page. However, unique bosses like Sergeant Crits wouldn't be a bad idea to put on their respective page as they're a major boss in the mission. Though each robot has its page so much like with the current 3D views on other class pages we can just add the 3D views on their page rather than have it clutter up all on the Mann Vs Machine page.

Swood and I were talking about putting in Base, Gatebot, Romevision and bosses (not Giants, but specifically named bosses), and it's not too much space. This is the worst it would possibly be, as Soldier Robots have three types of boss that wear different cosmetics or use different weapons. Plus, general consensus in the discussion so far is that we should include Gatebots somewhere. If not here, Swood and I have discussed putting them on the Gatebot hat page as an alternative, though all it would really save is one row. Insofar as tanks go, we could split Normal and Romevision designs as half-buttons, and show undamaged, the three damaged states, and the Final Wave tanks. — User ThatHatGuy Signature Icon.png 02:24, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
Discussion has been stagnant for a while, so I've decided to conclude with the following:
1. Robots: Normal, Normal ÜberCharged, Romevision, Romevision ÜberCharged and Gatebot — 5 images per robot
2. Tank: Normal, Normal "Final Wave", Romevision and Romevision "Final Wave" — 4 images total
3. Sentry Buster: Normal and Romevision — 2 images total
By "Normal" I mean the common BLU robots with no cosmetics. Anything else not listed above has been considered but rejected. — Tark 18:18, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

3D models of hazards

There hasn't been a discussion started on these, but one for the ghost and sawblade have already been made. I personally think that not every hazard needs a 3D model. Sure it's nice, but the Sawblade has nothing interesting about it and the Train is simply too large to notice any detail on it. I think it should be judged on a case-by-case basis rather than just making 3D models for the few separate hazard pages we have.

Map hazards if they're the regular ones, bosses if it's the Skeleton King. Either way, the skeletons are notable enough for 3D images imo.

If it were up to me, weapon pages wouldn't be as huge as they are now.
Just like I replied to the robot one, I don't think we need to make 3D views for each and every possible variant of something. The default one is fine - and there isn't much value in dedicating so much space for a prop used in only one map. — Tark 16:05, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

3D bumpercars?

I noticed that the Bumper Cars page is a huge stub, and so I thought... would a 3D image of the bumper car models work? I mean technically they're also used in the taunt, but maybe we can make unique ones with the mercs in them for it.--ShadowMan44 (talk) 08:25, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Taunt 3D images

For 3D taunt images, I think it could be easily pulled off, and there's not much of a discussion to be had. The only thing I want sorted out is:

  1. Do we create RED/BLU variants of prop images? (I vote yes)
  2. Do we create a combined prop image, similar to Battalion's Backup's "Combined" image? (I vote no)
  3. How do we handle partner taunts?
  4. How do we handle all/multi-class taunts?

I'd say for partner taunts (meaning taunts that are only 2 people, e.g. Skullcracker) we just skip them entirely. The highlight of these taunts are purely the 2 classes interacting, which would be pretty much impossible to do in HLMV.

For all/multi-class taunts, I am fairly certain we can do an example for each class if we keep the buttons as half pairs, except for the Spy which would be a full-sized button on the bottom. But the issue with this is a taunt like the Cheers!, which contains 9 props too. Perhaps a single-class example (matching the class in the infobox) would be best, followed by the props (if the taunt has no props, the single class image would be the only 3D image).

When it comes to the partner taunts I'll be honest I don't really know how to tackle that, but personally I'd say 3D views for just the props would be enough.

For taunts that contain props, such as Cheers!, I would say that the prop's 3D image would be stored in a different template, while a frame of the taunt's animation would be in the main template. For partner taunts, only do the intro.

In a different template how? Multiple 3D viewers on a single page messes up with the 2D images, last time I checked, so we should contain them all in one.
