Trading is an in-game system allowing players to swap weapons, hats and misc items allowing players to obtain items that they desire. Some items, such as store-bought items are 'untradable', meaning that they must remain on the original account that obtained them. Surprisingly, Promotional items such as Bill's Hat, the Lugermorph, the Big Kill, Max's Severed Head, the Lumbricus Lid and some Alien Swarm Parasites can be traded.

As of now, it is possible to trade with players on a players friends list and with other players in their current server. If one player has another player's Steam Community ID, then there is also an option to trade directly with that player.  This makes it easy to trade with someone who isn't in the same server that you are. However, you cannot trade (or send items) if the other player is off-line.

Due to the wide range given to trading, players may be subject to scam attempts and or offer disagreements. They are advised to consider the following advice.
*Don't let other people open your Mann Co. Supply Crate for you. Once the crate has been successfully traded to a user they may log off (and by so doing steal the crate) or, alternatively, the user may provide you with an item of little value and then log off.

**Also, when trading for a Mann Co. Supply Crate, check for which series it is, as it can be easy to miss. Generally people will be prepared to give more for a series 2 than a series 1, for example

*Items should never be purchased using money from another player; only purchase items from the Mann Co. Store in order to ensure safe transactions and prevent account details being used maliciously by others.
*Don't let other people paint items for you. As mentioned above, users may simply take your item(s) and then sever all contact with you.

*Do not let other players open a Mann Co. Supply Crate in return for items. Once the crate has been successfully traded, there is nothing to prevent the reciever opening the crate and then keeping the contents despite the agreements made. The series number of the crate should also be taken into account in order to prevent unbalanced trades.
*Don't trade for more items than will fit in a single trade window (the maximum is four items per trade). In addition, if you want the items for their metal value, ask for them to be converted into metal beforehand.

*Similar to the above, do not let other players paint items as part of an agreement. Users may simply take the item(s) and then sever all contact.
*Do not be fooled by renamed items, for example fake community items. Note that:

*Players attempting to scam others may offer an item labelled as a Community weapon, Vintage, Unusual or otherwise, when in actual fact they have simply renamed a regular item. Fake named weapons can be easily identified by the name colouring (Community weapons have green named, Vintage have blue names, and Unusual have purple names), or by the quotation marks that always surround a renamed item. Furthermore, understand that Community weapons cannot be traded whatsoever.
**Community weapons have green names and are level 50; a few are level 100.

*Remain impartial during a trade. Players may attempt to appear pleading or irritable in order to convince others to part with more items.
**Community weapons cannot be traded.

*Never agree to offers where additional items are added to "sweeten the deal".
**Vintage weapons/hats have blue names.

*Never trade a high-value item for another before first checking availability and crafting blueprints. Usually, trading for the spare parts and combining them is a much better idea.

*If the player tries to guilt you into giving them more items, they're likely scamming you.

*If you agree to a trade and the player tells you he received the same / a better offer from someone else and asks for you to "sweeten the deal" with more items, he or she is likely lying.

*Never trade a high-value item for another item before first checking how easily crafted the desired item is. Usually, trading for the spare parts and combining them is a much better idea, as with the Polycount weapons.

Trading is an in-game system allowing players to swap weapons, hats and misc items with others in order to obtain items they desire.

Mechanics

A player may select a fellow user from their friends list, from the current game server or by entering their Steam Community ID. A trading request will be sent to that player, providing they are online and are currently playing Team Fortress 2. Should the reciever choose to accept the trade, the game screen will be replaced with the trading screen.

Up to four items can be traded from one player to another, regardless of whether they are a hat or a weapon. Both users can communicate and determine the trade using the provided private chat box. Items purchased from the Mann Co. Store are untradeable and therefore cannot be passed between players. Promotional items, such as [[Bill's Hat and the Lugermorph for example, can be traded.

Upon a player's first trade, he or she will receive a random item along with the items traded. A player wishing to block all trade requests can do so using the game options.

Trading Tips

Due to the wide range given to trading, players may be subject to scam attempts and or offer disagreements. They are advised to consider the following advice.

 • Items should never be purchased using money from another player; only purchase items from the Mann Co. Store in order to ensure safe transactions and prevent account details being used maliciously by others.
 • Do not let other players open a Mann Co. Supply Crate in return for items. Once the crate has been successfully traded, there is nothing to prevent the reciever opening the crate and then keeping the contents despite the agreements made. The series number of the crate should also be taken into account in order to prevent unbalanced trades.
 • Similar to the above, do not let other players paint items as part of an agreement. Users may simply take the item(s) and then sever all contact.
 • Do not agree to trade more than four items. The user may disengage the trade after the first initial items are transferred. In addition, if the items are being exchanged for their metal value, ask for them to be converted into metal beforehand.
 • Players attempting to scam others may offer an item labelled as a Community weapon, Vintage, Unusual or otherwise, when in actual fact they have simply renamed a regular item. Fake named weapons can be easily identified by the name colouring (Community weapons have green named, Vintage have blue names, and Unusual have purple names), or by the quotation marks that always surround a renamed item. Furthermore, understand that Community weapons cannot be traded whatsoever.
 • Remain impartial during a trade. Players may attempt to appear pleading or irritable in order to convince others to part with more items.
 • Never agree to offers where additional items are added to "sweeten the deal".
 • Never trade a high-value item for another before first checking availability and crafting blueprints. Usually, trading for the spare parts and combining them is a much better idea.
 • Be wary of offers that are too good to be true from strangers; a legitimate offer should be an item exchange of approximately equal value.
 • Always check the items again if the offer has been changed, or you think the offer has been changed. Some players will swap an item at the last second in the hope of it going unnoticed.
 • Use your common sense.

Untradable items

Due to the possibility of selling items outside of the Mann Co. Store for real money, some items are not tradeable.
