And by that I don't mean once or twice, but '''at least six times''' (I just went through my contribs and counted it), probably 100~200 users. But what makes me really mad is when you say that I am "not acting like a moderator". Seriously? I am doing all that is to my reach, giving 110% out of myself for the Wiki and you just tell me to do MORE, even if it may not be the best solution?! Like I said, I'm making them choose an alternative instead. An alternative that won't automatically send them an email (I have this feeling that people don't like it when they are gone from the Wiki for some months and then receive an email about someone posting on their talk page), that they can see and switch to the user infobox format with ease (which most of them aren't aware of until they see that link) and right now I'm complementing that message with a link to my talk page for any complaints. There probably won't be any problems with inactive users, since their pages won't be seen by anyone as they haven't been editing for some time and they won't need to edit it at all - if, however, they ever need assistance, they are free to do so on my talk page. {{n}} [[User:EpicEric|<span style="color:#5885A2;font-size:15px;font-family:'Trebuchet MS';text-shadow:#e3e3e3 1px 1px 0px;"><b>Epic Eric</b></span>]] <small> ([[User talk:EpicEric|T]] <nowiki>|</nowiki> [[Special:Contributions/EpicEric|C]])</small> 08:15, 27 November 2012 (PST)

:::I'll ask again: Why does the item info box need this message if the problem predominately lies with mis-use of the class info box? Where are you going to draw the line between what receives this notice and what doesn't? There's absolutely nothing wrong with users receiving e-mail notifications (what's wrong with more editing?), so why are you spinning it into an issue? Unused voice commands

This is something I'm interested in. Where did you find evidence that those laugh files were part of a cut voice command menu? Please don't take this as a challenge to your work, it's just that I had never known there was a cut one. -- En Ex (talk) 20:22, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

As an example here's the Scout:
  • Response PlayerTauntsScout
  • {
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/1298.vcd"
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/436.vcd"
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/437.vcd"
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/1299.vcd"
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/1300.vcd"
  • scene "scenes/Player/Scout/low/1301.vcd"
  • }
  • Rule PlayerTauntsScout
  • {
  • criteria ConceptPlayerTaunts IsScout
  • Response PlayerTauntsScout
  • }

which is part of the

  • //--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • // Speech Menu 3
  • //--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

of tf\scripts\talker\Scout.txt -- "ConceptPlayerTaunts" is referenced in tf\scripts\talker\response_rules.txt as:

  • criterion "ConceptPlayerActivateCharge" "Concept" "TLK_PLAYER_ACTIVATECHARGE" required
  • criterion "ConceptPlayerChargeReady" "Concept" "TLK_PLAYER_CHARGEREADY" required
  • criterion "ConceptPlayerTaunts" "Concept" "TLK_PLAYER_TAUNTS" required
  • criterion "ConceptPlayerBattleCry" "Concept" "TLK_PLAYER_BATTLECRY" required
  • criterion "ConceptPlayerCheers" "Concept" "TLK_PLAYER_CHEERS" required

Notice how it's sitting in amongst the voice menu sections in both files? They aren't part of the standard taunt set, and aren't referenced anywhere else. Those voice lines aren't used any where else wither. They aren't in voicecommands.txt, which led me to believe they were never implemented. It's all there ready to be implemented, like the unused response lines for any class. i-ghost 20:32, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Very cool. And good find, I'll add. Thanks for the info. Lemme know if you find anything else like this in the game files. -- En Ex (talk) 21:10, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Heavy voice files

Hey. I've reuploaded all "Heavy_" files from the game cache, updated all pages to use the new filenames and deleted the annoying old files. You can find a list of all good Heavy audio files to work with at User:Seb26/heavyaudio/gud. The only files I didn't manage to get were these taunt files (they are not present in \tf\sound\vo). Tomorrow I may try redownloading them from the wiki (the files remain on the server after deletion) as my connection at the moment is so frustratingly slow. If you can manage to get ahold of the files before then (as I have no clue where they are in the GCF) then feel free to upload them. Taunt files 01, 04 and 08 exist, however.

File Licensing

Thanks for the heads up - do I need to re-upload the audio file to attach a license to it? I can't seem to find an option to edit the description. Cooper Kid 12:46, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

You can attach a license by editing the 'page' of the file as you would edit any other page, then type out one of the licenses. So for instance if you wanted to add the Creative Commons (self) license, you would add {{CC|by-3.0|self}} underneath where you previously wrote "Audio pronunciation of ClaidheamhMòr." If you have any trouble with this, don't hesitate to ask. i-ghost 12:51, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Ubered Skewer

Apologies.

I've had that happen a number of times. I'm not sure if it's map related (have all been on ctf_2fort) but I'll try to get more specifics on it and record a demo/capture video next time.

-Nino "Khamir"

Welcome to the Team Fortress Wiki. No need to apologise; just make sure to test any findings on an unmodded/local server before posting it to the Wiki. I can confirm that the Skewer taunt only stuns the UberCharged target; it doesn't kill them. Oh, and make sure to sign talk page posts with ~~~~, it adds your name and the time of the post automatically. If you're unsure of anything, feel free to ask on the relevant talk page. :) i-ghost 12:43, 23 June 2011 (PDT)

Community Phongboost

I noticed your recent edit to Item Quality regarding the Phongboost, and was curious as to the specifics of "Certain other", are there additional items with the boost now? Or are you just referring to the Sticky Jumper? I'm curious to see what is included if the former is true. ~ Ath (talk) 09:26, 16 September 2011 (PDT)

Out of the c_ models, the Cow Mangler, Righteous Bison, Sticky Jumper, Disciplinary Action, Loch n' Load, Jag, Iron Curtain, Brass Beast, Frying Pan (wat?), Direct Hit and the Original are all correctly rigged for the extra community phong boost. One or two others (Soda Popper, Quick Fix, Tomislav, Powerjack) are sort of halfway rigged so I'm not sure if they'll work correctly. i-ghost 10:06, 16 September 2011 (PDT)

Your new response rules

Thank you for implementing/fixing these. It's always my favourite part of any update. I took care of most of the wiki pages and I noticed that heavy's old thanks command has no scene and sound file, yet it's linked in heavy's response rules. I suppose Valve failed again in adding them? Oh also before I forget Ullapool Caber's taunt doesn't work with HWM models at all :( Blackbird 02:03, 14 October 2011 (PDT)

You're welcome; and thanks very much for looking after those pages by keeping them accurate. Regarding the Heavy's fourth thanks scene and sound file, I submitted those to Valve however they told me that they're happy with what's in-game at the moment; Valve has left them linked in the talker files since I submitted my first wave of response rules. i-ghost 03:04, 14 October 2011 (PDT)
I've ran into another weird thing while browsing the game's files and that is Heavy's yell lines. They do not appear to be used unless there is some other "magic" to play them and only one present on wiki is Heavy_yell14. They appear to be original lines with more yelling like Sniper's whisper lines are whispered old lines. Care to enlighten me please? Blackbird 02:09, 19 October 2011 (PDT)
Those lines appear to be early 'draft' versions of his existing lines, most likely used in the early stages of development for character testing. If you listen closely, you'll hear that the voice is slightly different compared to the lines we have in-game (which are separate files in the GCF). They do not have any associated .vcd files, so I could not implement them. i-ghost 11:52, 19 October 2011 (PDT)

HL1 Maps that work in TFC

So how do you propose we do this "Custom Map" documenting? 404: User Not Found (talk) 05:48, 21 October 2011 (PDT)

Actually, I have an idea involving creation a custom navbox for them. I have a doctor's appointment to get to, but I'll get working on the navbox when I get back. Just make sure none of the map articles get removed :P 404: User Not Found (talk) 05:50, 21 October 2011 (PDT)
It would be best to follow the same format we have for TF2 custom maps, example. i-ghost 07:31, 21 October 2011 (PDT)
There! I created a custom navbox for the maps, labelling them as "Custom maps". I had to undo all of SiPlus's rampant deletion tagging and revert his edit to the List of maps (Classic) page to re-add the Deathmatch section, which I renamed to "Custom Maps". Everything is all nice and squared up now. Just gotta re-categorize the pages and we're good to go! 404: User Not Found (talk) 02:53, 25 October 2011 (PDT)

This is fixed now, thanks for bringing this up. i-ghost 12:34, 21 October 2011 (PDT)

I am in need of your assistance.

I am in need of your assistance in closing the HL1 maps discussion once and for all. I've taken your suggestion of relabelling the map articles as custom content/custom maps in an effort to quell the flames that SiPlus seems to be fanning, yet he has insisted that "we need a moderator". Do the community a huge favour and finally put an end to this silly discussion so we can all move on with our lives. 404: User Not Found (talk) 00:35, 26 October 2011 (PDT)

Hammertime

It always bothered me that the Winger had no hammer as compared to the Pistol. Then I remembered that some pistols have an internal firing pin, such as the Glock, which do not have an external hammer.

This was further confirmed by perusing the original developmental thread which showed that while the original design included a hammer, it was removed mainly for looks with the plausible explanation of an internal firing pin.

In the end, I just wanted to say that the weapons of TF2 have a stylized look, but still need to maintain a sense of plausibility.

Perhaps, the hammerless state should be noted in a fashion not unlike the 7 vs. 6 chamber debate and differing reloading aspect on the L'Etranger page?

P.S. You were right about the the Winger not being based on any real weapon

User Upgrade Signature.png 14:55, 2 May 2012 (PDT)

Well researched. Explaining the weapon's lack of hammer might make for some interesting trivia or could be merged with an existing trivia piece; just remember to link to the exact post stating why it was designed that way. I can't say for sure that it won't be removed by another editor if they disagree with its notability. i-ghost 15:06, 2 May 2012 (PDT)

RE: Item infobox

I believe most, if not all usages of {{item infobox}} in user pages, are for describing the users themselves as if they were an item. The {{user infobox}} template, on the other hand, is ideal for describing users. When placed in a subpage, however, this template is used (most times) to refer to an item, either for sandboxing or fun purposes. Plus, the item infobox has little support to user pages, which often results in errors. Unless we were to make this template more user page-friendly or create a new one just for this purpose instead (user item infobox, maybe) or even implement these features in the user infobox (<-- my favorite idea, I can even make a draft by tomorrow), this seems like the best way to deal with this right now.  –  Epic Eric (T | C) 15:15, 26 November 2012 (PST)

And was user-page {{Item infobox}} usage ever such a huge issue that it demanded cruft added to the template in the form of an automated message? Class infobox mis-use I can understand, as users see the infobox and just copy-paste, but this isn't an issue. Instead of trying to police user pages, why don't you try and educate mis-users of templates instead of presenting them with intimidating warnings? You know, like a moderator should be doing. i-ghost 16:03, 26 November 2012 (PST)
I have been doing that for quite some time now. I created these automated messages to make users aware of a better template for talking about themselves instead of taking a broken template which does not only creates errors, but also makes their pages a mess. This was all supposed to be an easier way to solve this problem, a time-saver. By clicking the link given, I expected that users would be able to figure out a better solution for their user pages. Also, I'll create that draft anyway later today.
About your other point: I was one of the very few, if not the only moderator to go ahead and manually go through a list of all uses of these main space infoboxes to find transclusions in user pages, decide whether or not to replace it depending on the case, manually recreate the template according to what the user placed in the infoboxes and place a message about it in their talk pages. And by that I don't mean once or twice, but at least six times (I just went through my contribs and counted it), probably 100~200 users. I'm not trying to intimidate them, I'm offering them a better solution, one that will make everyone happy (their pages won't be broken [not only on the technical side, but also the esthetic one], I could spend my afternoons on something else instead, the item infobox page won't be misused, the rest of the staff wouldn't have to do this job as well). –  Epic Eric (T | C) 08:15, 27 November 2012 (PST)
I'll ask again: Why does the item info box need this message if the problem predominately lies with mis-use of the class info box? Where are you going to draw the line between what receives this notice and what doesn't? There's absolutely nothing wrong with users receiving e-mail notifications (what's wrong with more editing?), so why are you spinning it into an issue? And yes, you're overstepping your mark by systematically editing user pages without consent. On a lighter note, please keep discussions on the page that they originated from (no sense moving this now). i-ghost 15:02, 27 November 2012 (PST)
