The Triboniophorus Tyrannus, known to the community as the "Brain Slug," is a community-created headwear item for the Pyro and was chosen by Valve to be released with the first wave of community-contributed content due to its outstanding quality. It appears as a green, gelatinous slug attached diagonally atop the gas mask of the Pyro's head.

Trivia
- This hat is similar to the brain slugs that occasionally appeared in the animated television show Futurama, where they would be attached to someone's head, controlling their mind, forcing them to appear semi-comatose , talk in a monotonous tone, and do anything to spread the brain slugs throughout the universe. The brain slugs in the cartoon however had one large eye instead of two small eyes, as well as two antennae.
- It is more likely that this hat is a reference to B-Grade science fiction movies of the 1950's, the era Team Fortress 2 takes place in.
- This hat also bears a striking resemblance to one found in the Steam-hosted racing game Zero Gear. Zero Gear is about as obsessed with hats as Team Fortress 2, where this hat is available as a headgear and a character. The Pyro's hat is identical to the character/hat in Zero Gear.
- The Triboniophorus Tyrannus is one of the few hats that are jiggleboned, meaning that they will jiggle around realistically with the player's movement. Other hats that have the "jiggleboned" trait include, the "Respectless Rubber Glove", and Max's Severed Head, among others.
- The Triboniophorus is a type of green slug native to Australia. "Tyrannus" is Latin for "tyrant" or "king."
- It is the first hat thought to be a living creature, the other being the Alien Swarm Parasite.
- The Triboniophorus Tyrannus, unlike most hats, does not fall off the Pyro's head once he dies, not even if he gibs, in which case it simply disappears.
- This hat turns back to it's original green color when the player dies if it has been painted.
- The hat's description was written by crushilista
