The Civilian is a playable character in Team Fortress Classic and a 'hidden' and unused class in Team Fortress 2.

Team Fortress 2

Civilian Class

By default, he uses the Scout's model, though this can be changed to other class models. He possessed very low health (the lowest of any class, and the same as the Team Fortress Classic civilian), has no weapons or form of attack, lacks both voice commands and taunts and uses generic speech files when he is wounded or killed. Civilians possess no animations except the ragdoll/gibbing effect upon dying and so appear to glide along the ground in a reference pose when moving. The Civilian was originally able to be selected by typing join_class civilian into the console upon joining a game. A later patch removed the command, rendering players unable to join the class. The existence of the civilian class seems to indicate a planned updated version of the VIP escort maps from the original Team Fortress. Alternatively, the class may have been included in the game files so that independent map makers and modders could add this feature. Additionally, the Administrator possesses a sound file in the GCF in which she commands the team to "Stop the courier." suggesting an official hunted game-mode was in the works at some point.

The Reference Pose

The reference pose is often referred to as the "Civilian". It places the player in a "T" shaped pose without animations or the use of their weapons. However, it does not change the player's health or movement speed.

Entering the Reference Pose

  • There are glitches which allow the player to enter the default reference pose, giving them a similar appearance to the original placeholder civilian model.
    • As any class, exit the resupply room and change your loadout. Enter the resupply room and change to the weapon that you have replaced. Taunt with this weapon while sliding into the resupply cabinet.
    • While sv_cheats is set to 1, using "addcond 0" will force the player into the reference pose.
    • (Note: Make sure "Remember current item" is checked in options before you begin) As any class with a weapon you can't equip (i.e. the Sniper with the Razorback), equip the other unlock for that weapon's slot (in this case, Jarate), walk outside the respawn area holding said item, equip the unusable weapon (Razorback) and die. You should now be in "Reference Pose".

Team Fortress Classic

The Civilian class originated from the game Team Fortress Classic. In the game, its main and only weapon was an umbrella, which worked quite similarly to the Crowbar used by most other classes. It was used as the VIP in the escort maps.

Trivia

  • The Sniper keeps a bobble-head of the original Team Fortress Classic civilian in his RV. This made a brief cameo appearance in the Meet the Sniper video.
  • The original (Scout) civilian possesses completely unique death screams. These sounds can still be found in the game files, under crit_death1-5.wav in the player folder. These were also all the death sounds for all classes before they were all given unique voice acting. One Two Three Four Five
  • In the Team Fortress Classic config files, it says that the civilian has a Crowbar, but it's actually an umbrella. However, this may mean that the game is programmed to replace the Crowbar's model specifically for the Civilian.
