A Custom Map is a map created by a players. These maps can vary from simple changes to Official Maps (Removal of areas, added items or functions, Time of Day and Weather alterations, etc), to completely new and unique maps. If approved by Valve, some Custom Maps may be directly added to Team Fortress 2 in Patches.

When you join a server with a Custom Map running, the game will automatically download the map file, if you don't already have it, and place it in the correct directory unless you disable custom content downloads in the options menu.

If you download the map separately from a website, place the map file (has the extension .BSP) into the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[your Steam username here]\team fortress 2\tf\maps

The exact address may vary based on your operating system and the directory of your Steam installation. If you are running a dedicated server, you need to place the BZ2 file onto your sv_downloadurl. If the creator did not include a BZ2 file, you will have to create one yourself.
