Some memes to add and remove

The fact that some memes on here I have never heard of is a little shocking since if have played the game since 2007. I still believe some of these don't have enough popularity to be on here, and some have been overlooked.

Some memes to add:

  • Pootis and Gottam (did I mention that Gottam is the first TF2 meme invented?)
  • This Is Scout, Rainbows Make Me Cry!
  • Bonk Remixes and or Songs
  • Need A Dispenser Here!

And don't worry, all of these are on KYM.

Now, one to remove. (I will add reasons why)

  • Seeman (not a reconazied meme; doesn't have allot of views

Future Additions

This page is pretty full, but it is still missing:

  • Humping Sniper[1]
  • HWM models in Garry's Mod (although this is probably part of a bigger Garry's Mod category) [2]
  • Golden Machine Gun[3]

Are these possible additions? --Focusknock 11:43, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

On the russian page, there is a TF2 rick roll. Can someone stranslate that to english? - Mentlegen

Never heard of any except the infamous HWM models.

I don't heard about these memes except HWM models. I think that is better put the Christian Brutal Sniper. --Jagoba RL 17:23, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I find it odd that while the page mentions the Odd Scout (which had three or four videos), Seeman and his lesser-known companion, Seeldier, aren't talked about. Wing Dairu 05:35, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

I never even heard of those (even though I don't spend my day watching TF2 gmod videos on youtube), so I'm inclined to say their popularity and notability isn't skyrocket high to include them in the "memes" article. Killicon backstab.png Stab ! 19:01, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
I've heard of seeman, but never of seeldier nor odd scout. And I spend my days watching TF2 gmod videos. Still, odd scout has lots of views. Most seeman videos have far less. Lord Melchior 16:26, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

What about the In A Nutshell videos, like 2Fort In A Nutshell, Dustbowl In A Nutshell or Achievement_idle in a nutshell? Those have a characteristic enough style and they're getting popular/widespread enough that it might merit mentioning down the line. Reverie Planetarian 10:51, 11 February 2011 (EST)

I defenetly say that "...in a nutshell is a popular fad." Guybrush20X6 00:56, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

W+M1

"An infamous video showed a player experiencing success with the Pyro by only using the "W" key and "Mouse1" (Moving forward and primary fire). This led to the creation of the term W + M1,"

This is inaccurate. The term W+M1 existed way before the video (which dates from 2009), right about when TF2 started if I recall correctly. I'm editing this. Stabnrun 02:08, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

a whole LOAD of memes: should I add them all?

i know the whereabouts of a few seemingly million, do i give the link or add them all? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Yourdeadthatsgoodamen (talk) • (contribs)

There really aren't that many TF2 Fads, let alone memes. I don't advise adding as many popular youtube video characters as you know of etc. If you have any suggestions, suggest it here in the talk page, and you'll get some input from the rest of the members. Demopan

I think this counts as a meme now but I don't know enough to add it. Guybrush20X6 23:30, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Wait a couple months. If it's still around, it can be added. Bonzi77 09:02, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
File%3ADemopan.jpg Is a picture of Demopan. I believe it's currently a meme right now, but again, let us way a month. If it still continues, then we can call that a meme. A meme takes time. Wintergreen 00:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Not to hijack this section, but speaking of other well-known memes, the Gentlementlemen series (including the other videos with that song, despite the realm of the meme extending far beyond TF2) is also be notable enough to be added, as well as possibly Polite/Crazed Sniper (though it seems they only have one video each). —烏Γ (kaw at me), 19:39, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, a Community Manager on Knowyourmeme.com had this to say:

There are obviously a TON of videos, image macros, and every type of media one can think of for Team Fortress 2. The game has a rich history in it’s short life, with lots of updates, and crossovers into other memes. The problem is that not all of these things are memetic items. The vast majority of it is fanart. The game is insanely popular, I play it myself, but it’s the kind of thing that will naturally be parodied. It’s like the Britney Spears of video games. And with video games today becoming more popular than movies, TF2 is a well-represented force in the media regardless of what any particular instance looks like. Any big video game will inspire parody and fanart."

That was a year ago, and shortly after the said article was posted as an attempted meme, it was deadpooled. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 09:01, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Knowyourmeme as a guideline.

I've been thinking, and I hate to be the one to say this, but as much as we love the items on the Memes page, a lot of these things are not Memes. They are just huge fads within the Team Fortress community. A big bunch of these have managed to cultivate Meme status, but we really can't list every Team Fortress 2 inside joke as a born Meme. Most people outside of the TF2 community have never heard of these, even the Meme filled /b/tards. I think on a wiki (an official one at that) we should be more correct in our terminology.

I propose that we either use knowyourmeme.com (they have a status: confirmed/denied on the right) as a resource to check before adding content to this page, move some of the items to a differently named page or section, or list their current Meme status beside the proposed Meme.

Before anyone discredits knowyourmeme.com they have a stricter system than here when it comes to accepting and they do a hell of a lot of research before announcing something as a meme.

So, to start said ball rolling:

  • Gentlemen - Confirmed Meme.
  • Poor and Irish - Not a Meme, not even a single reference or attempt. An inside joke.
  • Saxton Hale - Deadpooled, it just TF2 fan base clone of a real Meme. An inside joke.
  • Spycrab - Confirmed Meme.
  • Demopan - Confirmed Meme.
  • Voice Clip Mashups - I checked, but this is pretty obviously not a Meme.
  • nope.avi - Currently being researched.
  • Scout is Delicious - Confirmed Meme.
  • Painis Cupcake - Deadpooled, however reopened for research.
  • Vagineer - Currently being researched, though looks promising.
  • Odd Scout - No references at all.
  • Seeman - Not a Meme, give it time.
  • Christian Brutal Sniper - Not a Meme.

The problem with most of these, is they are simply either inside jokes or things that have a fan base and have been cultivated within the TF2 community because of this. It's like calling a TV show a Meme, just because it has a fan base that quote it in parodied situations, they are not the same thing. Even noting them as a cult status or something similar would be better.

To those sad at the idea to see some of these go or moved somewhere else, remember, a lot of these have yet to grow, and many will eventually reach said status. This page needs a better layout and content style anyway. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 09:31, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

The problem with using Know Your Meme is that there are some memes (Saxton or nope.avi for example) that are heavily used within the TF2 community but rarely used outside of it (as opposed to, say, "Gentlemen" or "Spycrab") and so they might get deadpooled even though they're used a lot. But I agree, this needs a major MAJOR rewrite, most of the "Youtube Memes" are just popular videos that I personally never heard of (and by "popular" I mean only a few few portion of the YT/GMod/TF2 community has seen them) and there are some old memes that should be referenced too. Who remembers "OVERTIME OVERTIME OVAAHTIME"? Killicon backstab.png Stab ! 12:43, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Indeed, but that is partially my point, those not acceptable (or yet acceptable) to sites like that, are not really Memes at all. They are just fads and cult fan comedy that has gained popularity within Team Fortress 2's community. They are nothing but inside jokes and references, so I think we really need to get rid of the whole "Team Fortress 2 and its community are responsible for the birth of a variety of memes." when the game really can't take that much credit. I mean the meme definition is vague at best even if it is taken from wikipedia. The definition of a meme could be applied to many non-meme things. As a whole, we either need to redefine these items as internal fads (with a better title of course) or strip out the non-meme items. Either that or we put them under honorable mentions in a section on the page. Knowyourmeme.com is quite happy to acknowledge the TF2 content as a Meme as long as it gains that status. Many of these are simply... Well, not at that point... I mean I like to consider my self in the know when it comes to the internetz, I have developed custom content for TF2, I lurk youtube etc, but even I have not heard of Seeman for example. They are just VERY popular youtube fan videos that people like. That doesn't make them memes. Otherwise every partner video on youtube would be a meme. As for the whole audio mash up thing, that isn't even a meme at all. While it is widespread in TF2 videos for custom dialogue, people have been doing audio mashup content to gain custom speech since before the damn TV was invented, so that one needs to go either way. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 14:19, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Simple solution, we move the page to something like "Fanbase Fads"/"Fan Fads" or something better sounding, then we can add all the popular items as they are. Then at the end of each paragraph for each individual fad, if the fad has reached meme status, we simply add "The "Gentleman" fad has reached Meme status" at the end in bold or something, with the name linking to the knowyourmeme.com page (replacing the fad name with whatever). -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 14:24, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
For those unsure about how relevent "Fad" or even "Trend" is;
"A fad, sometimes called a trend, meme or a craze, is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way.[1] A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly."
Considering they even use meme in the opening line, I'd say it was appropriate, giving that the internet's own definition of a meme is a little more specific and in-depth than a fad. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 14:30, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
I'd definitely agree with moving the page to something a little less rigid and specific, since that would allow for popular non-memes to be included. XP —烏Γ (kaw at me), 19:05, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
I agree with changing the title as "memes" isn't exactly accurate, but changing it to "Community fads" isn't accurate either because it implies that ALL of these "memes" were quickly forgotten shortly after being popular, which isn't true for some of them (Gentlemen, Spycrab, etc.). Changing it to "Community trends" would be a better in my opinion since it says nothing about its duration or popularity. What do you think? Killicon backstab.png Stab ! 14:23, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
"Trend" directly implies the duration of popularity. >v> —烏Γ (kaw at me), 17:43, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
How does "trend" imply the duration of popularity, really?
Trend: "a line of general direction of movement, a prevailing tendency of inclination, a style or preference, a line of development, or the general movement over time of a statistically detectable change. In a few words, "trend" is a synonym to "tendency"."
Fad: "A phenomenon that becomes popular for a very short time. From French fade, from Late Latin *fatidus, a blend of Latin fatuus (“foolish”) and vapidus (“vapid”)."
"Though the term trend may be used interchangeably with fad, a fad is generally considered a fleeting behavior whereas a trend is considered to be a behavior that evolves into a relatively permanent change."
Trend sounds much less derogatory and more accurate to me, whereas fad directly implies that these terms were short-lived, when, quite frankly, most of them weren't/aren't. Killicon backstab.png Stab ! 22:52, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
True, but that all depends on your perception of time given the individual scenarios. Leg Warmers were considered a Fad during the 80s, but they were worn for a whole ten years. Then during the 2000s, they made a comeback after a decade of being unworn and unfashionable, and are now as popular as ever amongst teen girls. "Fad" is accurately suitable, given that when the game dies out, only the Memes will likely live on. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 14:52, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

I think this should be featured because...

I believe this page should be a featured article because i found it very informational. Newbies might be confused when people talk about spycrabs and W+M1. I actually figured out the meaning of W+M1 on this page. Please make this a featured article.

I have a number of memes that I know that are worthy of mention here. -- Thunder

I moved your paragraph to the bottom of the page due to it not having a title and thus being above the page content index. I hope you don't mind. On that note, my opinion of your suggestion is that I would hate for something displaying a main character as a Vagina, to be featured on the main page. Memes are not vital/helpful information and some of them are certainly not what a new player would want to see. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 09:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Vagineer

Ben, any reason you deleted the bit about Snyphurr? Seems like a valid part of the Vagineer series. On another note, I readded the definition of memes to the top, to provide some sort of context for the "recognized meme" notes on Demopan and his colleagues. —烏Γ (kaw at me), 01:54, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

I removed it because I don't think we should be listing every insignificant little detail about their story arc and episode listings etc. I did the same for the Painis Cupcake, I removed a part that links to his other videos. I think each section should just explain who they are and why they are a Fad/Meme, with links to say their first appearance being relevent. Each paragraph was/is way too big on some of them anyhow. So in short, Snyphurr isn't the Vagineer, so unless he is suddenly a Fad/Meme too, I don't think he should be mentioned. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 22:51, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Oddscout?

Correct me if i am right, but i have not heard about that meme. I have played Tf2 for a time now and i have not heard a single time that someone have talked about Oddscout. So how did it become a meme? Altair 18:11, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

It is fairly new. There were 3 videos that involved the Odd Scout, but thats it. It wouldn't be considered a meme, but more of a fad Nihilus0 01:39, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

A Fad? To be honest, i have seen more of Heavydile and Weaslecake than Oddscout. I wouldnt really count it as a fad either, but more of something odd randomness that you just make because that you are bored. If that was ok, why the hell aint L.A.E (Law Abiding Engineer) ok then? Altair 12:06, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I can assure you, though not a Meme, it is most definitely a Fad. The Odd Scout has a lot of fan art (some of it questionable) and is also referenced occaisonaly during gameplay (I have heard such). The whole point of removing the Meme page and having a Community Fads page, was so that things such as this could be noted. A Fad is low enough, there really isn't a need to lower it to something else. As for Law Abiding Engineer; though popular, it's questionable as to whether this is a Fad. It's pretty much been forgotten about in terms of keeping it alive through joke/reference. Give it time though, it may become a Fad at some point, and as I said, it IS debatable. -- Benjamuffin Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 14:45, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Indeed Bejnamuffin, but the question is, will it have enough time? Or will it collapse like a very strange video with engineer did from the Fads? Nobody knows. Altair 11:00, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Sven's Condensed list of requested Fads

Here it is:

  • Snyphurr
  • Jarate Cake Dick
  • The "Kiss Me" series of videos
  • Sewer Medic
  • The "Food debate" series of videos
  • Weaselcake

Lol forgot the signature. Sven 22:08, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't really think any of those are Fads. I know of a few of them (such as the Food debate) but they're really just popular videos, not fads. -- Benjamoose Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 01:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Why wouldn't the Food Debate, at least, be a fad by now? It's a long, ongoing series, with derivatives. It's better than the "What I see when X Y" series, which could arguably be mentioned here, also. Sven 21:15, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
See now I WOULD consider calling the "What i see when I close my eyes" a fad, though it's not strictly TF2 related so it's not applicable. Beyond the actual videos made by the author, there is little in the way of additional fan created content for the Food Debate. It's a popular video, but nothing more really... -- Benjamoose Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 21:19, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, it seems that our definitions of the word "Fad" is different, at the very least. I would hardly consider Odd Scout a Fad, but, as your post in the above discussion says, you clearly do. I still think that the Food Debate is more deserving than Odd Scout, given the amount of videos about it. Sven 21:28, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
If there are any that has a chance here to be on the list, it has to be Weaslecake and the food debate series. Snyphurr? I dont think so. Just a special version made for Vagineer. Jarate Cake dick? It has no chance at all. Also, who is jarate cake dick? The Kiss Me series? Nope. They are starting to get pretty boring. They would have a chance if it was'nt for that they has been going on for a good while and really boring me out. Sewer Medic? It would have a chance, if gb7zone7 was'nt so lazy that he stoped making the sewer medic. Weasle Cake and the food debate series do i consider. Altair 11:08, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Name of the article

I think we should change it back to memes, and maybe have "Fads" redirect to it. All in favor? Mr. Wii 23:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

They changed in the first place because many of the fads on this page aren't yet considered memes. Nihilus0 23:43, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

As Nihilus0 said, there are WAY more fads here than memes, the current system of listing fads then marking the ones that have become memes is a lot neater than the old page. Not only that but if we moved it back, we'd have to lose half of the content. -- Benjamoose Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 01:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w2h9DXJh7c | This is probably a new fad. It's got a full page of responses now. I guess I could describe it. It consists of a Soldier on the middle point of Badlands staring at the viewer for a brief moment, then declaring the name of a country, such as Russia. The soldier's appearance changes to match the country that it said (For example, "Russia" leads to a Officer's Ushanka on the head.), After a brief moment, a music from the particular country starts playing, and the soldier dances. | Original Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w2h9DXJh7c Mr. Wii 18:25, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

@Mr Wii: I checked that out when you first posted about it above, and it looks like it's almost fad worthy though not a strong one as of yet. Though I do think it's worth discussing.
@TheJayMaster: Don't just add random "fads" to the page without discussing it's notability first.
@Everyone: Please, everyone remember; all new/recently made fads need to be discussed on this page before being added. Also, remember, just because something IS a fad, it doesn't mean it's notable enough to put on the page. If we put every fad on the wiki we'd have a never ending page of things most people had never heard of. This page is to be treated like the Community Mod pages (VS Saxton Hale for instance). By that I mean we only add the notable fads, and all memes (as they are already notable to become memes in the first place). Long story short, currently I don't think Staregineer is notable. -- Benjamoose Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 19:13, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Question

Should Dic Soupcan be a recognised meme or is he not famous enough? just wondering. {{icon killicon|weapon=showdown}} PWNED NARB!{{icon killicon|weapon=explosion}} 17:57, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

I've personally never heard of it, but the "recognized meme" tag, is reserved for actual memes. We can't really debate that one, as if something is a meme, it's strikingly obvious and on "knowyourmeme.com".
All you can really do is debate whether it is "fad" worthy, which I don't think it is. A quick youtube search pulls out a bunch of videos, but most of them are each from single users uploading multiple jokes on the subject. In other words, "a handful of videos each, but only a few users doing it". Meaning it's not a fad. Yet... My two cents. -- Benjamoose Om nom nom! (talk | contribs) 18:02, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
