— The Soldier on the operation of particle weapons
|
” |
The Righteous Bison is a secondary weapon for the Soldier. It is a handheld retro-future or steampunk styled ray gun.
The Righteous Bison fires an unreflectable projectile that is capable of piercing through multiple targets in a straight line but deals heavily reduced damage to buildings. The projectile deals damage to any enemies that are touching it every 45 milliseconds and can hit the same target repeatedly. Additionally, it does not feature the traditional ammo reserve used by other weapons. The weapon can be used to ignite Huntsman arrows held by a friendly Sniper.
Enemies killed by the Bison suffer a distinctive death; they will turn black and hover in mid-air, performing a specific disintegration animation, while surrounded by team-colored particles.

Update history
July 19, 2011 [Item schema update]
- The item was added to the item schema as 'Mystery Item'.[1]
July 20, 2011 Patch (Dr. Grordbort's Victory Pack)
- The Righteous Bison was added to the game.
- Optimized many particle effects related to the Righteous Bison.
- Updated the gamehaptics file
- Added recoil/draw/crit/reload forces for the Righteous Bison.
Bugs
- Causing an enemy Spy to feign death with the Righteous Bison will sometimes create two corpses: one 'ragdoll' corpse and one 'vaporized' corpse.
- This weapon will not set off pumpkin bombs.
- If a player dies before their projectile makes contact with and subsequently kills an enemy, the kill icon will be a generic skull and bones and not its original icon.
- In the client view, while crouching, the projectile will appear to fire much higher than the weapon model.
- This weapon's projectile passes through glass, but does not deal damage to enemies on the other side.
- If the player switches to any weapon before the projectile kills the enemy, the kill icon will become the current weapon held.
Trivia
- The appearance of this weapon is based on that of 'The Righteous Bison - Indivisible Particle Smasher', which can be purchased from the online store at Weta Workshop.
- Weta Workshop held a panel at Template:W 2011 and handed out coupon codes to visitors which could be redeemed in Team Fortress 2 for an untradable Righteous Bison.[2]
