The Vita-Saw (/vaɪtɑːsɔː/ veye-tah-saw) is a community-created melee weapon for the Medic. It appears as a rusty gas pump handle that has been outfitted with both a long needle and blood-stained knife underneath, and with a liquid-filled container connected to the top of the main part of the weapon. A small skull and bones symbol, coupled with eight tally marks, has been etched into the flat of the blade.
When equipped, this weapon lowers the Medic's maximum health by 10 to a total of 140. On the other hand, it will allow the player to retain up to 20% of an ÜberCharge after respawning. For example, dying with a 12% charge will cause the Medic to retain the 12% charge upon respawning, while dying with a charge of more than 20%, such as 45% of a full charge, will only retain a maximum of 20%. The retention will occur even if an ÜberCharge is deployed as long as the remaining charge does not deplete below 20%.
The ÜberCharge stored will be kept if the player switches teams, but will be lost if they change classes. The Vita-Saw stores charge upon death, and therefore the Medic can use a different melee weapon while building charge or even change melee loadout while respawning. So long as he dies with it equipped and doesn't change classes, the Medic will respawn with his previous ÜberCharge percentage to the maximum limit of 20%. An ÜberCharge is always lost when the round ends.
Similar to the Übersaw, the vial will fill up with a team-colored liquid as an ÜberCharge is built and drain as it is deployed.
The kill icon for the Vita-Saw was contributed by HyenaDip.

Update history
- The Vita-Saw was added to the game.
- [Undocumented] Gave this weapon a unique crafting recipe
- Taunting with this weapon now plays the old Übersaw taunt - a deeper viola tone. Previously it shared a taunt with the Bonesaw. [1]
- The mesh's smoothing groups were fixed resulting in clean, hard-edged look as opposed to the molten appearance it had before.
- [Undocumented] The weapon was added in the crafting blueprint for the Amputator.
- This weapon was given a unique kill icon.
- Fixed melee attacks not destroying remote detonation pipes (Stickybombs).
- [Undocumented] The Vita-Saw's crafting cost was reduced from one Reclaimed Metal + Übersaw to two Scrap Metal + Übersaw.
- [Undocumented] The Amputator's crafting cost was reduced from two Reclaimed Metal + Vita-Saw to two Scrap Metal + Vita-Saw.
- Fixed the Vita-Saw not displaying the Medic's ÜberCharge progress.
Bugs
- Upon taunting, the needle of the weapon will clip noticeably with the Medic's neck, while part of the handle will clip with his hand.
Trivia
- This weapon was originally created by IdleTard (model) and Daimao (texture) as a replacement for the Übersaw, hence its similarities to it. Community user Pie_Tony made an alternative texture for the weapon, but this was not used in the final version.
- Due to this weapon's strong resemblance to the ADAM Harvester from the Bioshock series (seen to the right), Valve requested and subsequently received permission from 2K Games to include it in Team Fortress 2.
- The connection to Bioshock is further reinforced in the name, a reference to the Vita-Chambers from Bioshock. The Vita-Saw and Vita-Chambers even share similar functions. In Bioshock, the Vita-Chambers respawn the player with a portion of their health and EVE, the energy used to perform abilities. Similarly, the Vita-Saw will respawn the player with a portion of their Übercharge after death.
- The original name of the weapon model was the Gentzücken Battle Needle before being officially added to the game.
