There are several types of item scams, most of which arise from the 4-item limit of the trading system. Notable scams include: Asking for more than four hats and leaving after the first round Using a friend to drive up the maximum bid for a hat Fake scam stories to arouse pity Offering to modify your hat with a bought item then get it back to you

To avoid getting scammed, always ask yourself: If I take this trade as it stands, and expect nothing more to come of it, is it a good deal? If the other guy quits immediately after I hit the first "trade" button, will I lose anything?

If you are scammed, the only option as of now is to file a steam support ticket, under the "TF2 items" subheader.
