Steam Trading Cards are virtual cards earned by playing games on Steam. Sets of cards can be turned into game badges and tradable Steam community items. Play any of the participating Trading Cards Beta games to get trading cards. Up to half the card set is dropped through game play, the other half is earned through user collecting process. Once a user collects a set of cards, they can be crafted into a game badge. Like the current badges, they are tied to user accounts and are shown on profiles. Unlike the current badges, crafting game badges earns marketable items like emoticons, profile backgrounds, and coupons. A user can level up badges by collecting the set again and crafting it again.

Get rewards for crafting badges
All badges have XP which contributes to Steam Level, a summary of user badge collection. Users can view someone’s Steam Level by hovering over their avatar. Leveling up earns user non-tradable items like profile showcases, extra friends list slots, and more. During badge crafting the user receives random rewards from a set of game-related items: profile backgrounds, emoticons, coupons or DLC coupons. They are tradable and can only be used while the user possess them.
A user can choose what they want to show off. Based on Steam Level, a user can customize their profile with showcases. A user can show off to other Steam users: favorite games, items up for trade, Workshop mods, Greenlight submissions, and screenshots.
