::Not sure what Ashes is going for here, but I've definitely seen some Mercenary badges with hire dates from 2014. Noting the recent item server silliness, the attribute hiding might be related to that, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I haven't seen any dateless badges myself. Perhaps it would be worth noting if there's a clear pattern to when the date doesn't appear and when it doesn't. I installed a mod that allows me to see the classes in the loadout on BLU, and the Mercenary badge turns into a Soldier of Fortune when I do it. Is this a glitch? Or something related to skins? (I'm guessing the second, since In Source Filmmaker, when you open the badge as a model, "skin 0" (usually for RED) is the Mercenary while skin 1 (usually for BLU) is the Soldier of Fortune)

Limited Item?

Won't this item be available forever, just not to those who have a Silver, Gold, or Beta medal? Anyone starting to play today or even a year from now will get it, so it isn't really limited.

Like you have said, it is an unlimited Item, similar to the Gibus. By the way, next time sign your comments. Danton 14:43, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
I thought I replied to this. Limited here means it will only drop a single time per account. So it's 'limited' to one per account. As opposed to hats or weapons which could drop numerous times.  – Smashman (talk) 14:50, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Mercenary naming?

Is it proper to have the name of the article "Mercenary"? its misleading and any of the classes could be a mercenary... What I'm trying to say is save mercenary for any future story line and or comics that may eventually refer to the classes as mercenaries. - Meter1060 18:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Well the badge is called "Mercenary" so any other name would be incorrect. Moussekateer 18:38, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
I meant more in that its name should include badge somewhere in there. - Meter1060 02:51, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
The classes are indeed mercenaries, but are referred individually. You don't hear anyone, in any canonical comic or otherwise, call the classes "Mercenary Scout" or "Mercenary Spy". However, it does make sense to place "Medal" or "Badge" or something next to it. --Vaught 03:12, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Ah I misunderstood your point. Yea I agree the word badge needs to be in there. Moussekateer 03:13, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Alright well we should ask an admin to get a bot to fix it and get all the corresponding links to be fixed as well. maybe the other 3 badges should also be renamed. - Meter1060 19:23, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
That wouldn't make sense at all, we don't label the hats as baseball helmet hat. The only exceptions are things like Polycount Pin or Mappers MedallionAres5566 13:01, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

When do new players get the item?

If someone buys TF2 today, when do they get the Mercenary dropped? Balladofwindfishes 20:43, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

It seems to be random. I have multiple accounts and on some it was instant and on others 2 weeks later. I have no idea what the trigger is. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 20:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I thought maybe it was a specific amount of time that could be incorporated into the article. Guess not. Balladofwindfishes 20:45, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Not Awarded to Free Players - Really a Bug?

Are we sure that it's a bug that Free-to-Play players don't aren't awarded the Mercenary? Maybe this is intentional.

Also, does it still get awarded to people who purchase TF2? Maybe the cutoff date for this became when the Uber Update came out. Vigilante 11:47, 8 July 2011 (PDT)

Two of my workmates have free accounts and have Mercenary badges. Strangely the hire date says April 2010 Webrunner 10:14, 12 July 2011 (PDT)

I've seen players with Mercenary badges with dates as recent as this month. However, my Dad's been playing F2P for a while and he doesn't have one. Can someone confirm if it's awarded for purchasing the game as Premium? If so, it's definitely worth noting. Evang7 18:51, 28 July 2011 (PDT)
It just seems to drop at a random point after you first start playing. Some people have badges before TF2 went F2P because they played the game during a free weekend, but then never bought it, and then when TF2 went F2P, it counted the free weekend as when they bought the game. Balladofwindfishes 18:53, 28 July 2011 (PDT)

I'm 100% positive new players are awarded a Mercenary one week after having upgraded to premium. --SilverHammer 19:00, 28 July 2011 (PDT)

I know one who received it one week after starting to play, but was only 5 days after upgrading to premium. — C2Talon 10:23, 10 October 2011 (PDT)
I have friends who are F2P and have Mercenary, it's given after x hours of play. Premium or F2P doesn't affect the item distribution. --Shattered Heart Lynx 09:53, 10 November 2011 (PST)

Replace that image

Seriously, I've tried replacing it twice but no-one other than me seems to realise that the current version of the image has the badge Photoshopped on. All of the other 119th badges got redone, why not this one? Onyyx 08:30, 21 April 2012 (PDT)

Hire Date

Recently, I have seen some players with a Mercenary Badge without a hire date. Is that normal, or did Valve change it so the badge no longer displays hire dates? Kvz.Iwantcoal (talk) 12:54, 21 March 2014 (PDT)

Its probably redundant to list the hire date since the game is free. So the hire dates would just be current date and no other ways to obtain the older badges. Its probably only going to stay on those who played TF2 before it went free. Ashes (talk) 12:58, 21 March 2014 (PDT)
