Halloween in Team Fortress 2 has been celebrated twice in the form of special event updates. Traditionally, these updates have introduced achievements and new items to be obtained through play on a specific event map. The two Halloween events have also incorporated additional elements to the backstory of the game through the update's hidden pages, most notably featuring the Mann Family.
The Terrifying Team Fortress Haunted Hallowe'en Special
Released October 29, 2009, the Haunted Hallowe'en Special was the first holiday-specific patch and event in Team Fortress 2. The patch introduced the community made map Harvest in both standard and event versions and also released the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, the Ghastly Gibus, Pumpkin Bombs, Halloween pumpkins, the Thriller Taunt, Ghosts, and five new achievements in the Scarechievements pack. The event lasted from October 29, 2009, to November 9, 2009.
Scream Fortress
The October 27, 2010 Patch, dubbed Scream Fortress, is the second annual Halloween celebration in Team Fortress 2. The update introduced a number of new items and maps. Two new maps, winners of the Art Pass Contest were introduced: the event map Mann Manor and its non-event counterpart Mountain Lab. The Mann Manor map introduced the Haunted Halloween Gifts and the Horseless Headless Horsemann, reuse of the Pumpkin Bombs and Halloween pumpkins of last year and reimplementation of the Thriller Taunt. There was also a new set of achievements, the Ghostchievements pack, added.
This year's event introduced many new items: the Haunted Metal Scrap, the Unusual Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker, Noise Makers, Halloween Masks, the Saxton Hale Mask, the Horseless Headless Horsemann's Head, the Voodoo Juju, the Spine-Chilling Skull, and two new community contributed hats, Cadaver's Cranium and the Horrific Headsplitter.
Non-Halloween specific additions include Description Tags, Gift Wrapping, and the Sticky Jumper.
