Hmmm, have a gander at this little beauty.
The Sniper

Items can be found in different qualities, or rarities. The quality of an item alters the colour of its displayed name and often affects its perceived trade value.

The names of item qualities (and the term "quality" itself) are derived from the game files.

Normal items

Level 1 Scattergun

Normal items are also called 'stock' items. These are the standard non-unlockable weapons that first shipped with the game, e.g. the Scattergun and the Rocket Launcher. These weapons are available to all players, and are therefore the only available weapons if a player's backpack cannot be retrieved via Steam. Since the Mann-Conomy Update, Unique variants of these items can be made by using a Name Tag or Description Tag with a Normal weapon, which are seen by checking the "Show Stock Items" box in the backpack view.

Unique items are items which can be purchased from the Mann Co. Store, dropped randomly through gameplay, obtained through achievements or crafted. As such, Unique is regarded as the "default" quality for items.

Vintage items

Vintage items are items that were obtained before the release of the Mann-Conomy Update. Most existing Unique items were changed to Vintage items in order to increase their appeal in trading. However, they bear no difference other than their blue name and a "Vintage" prefix. Some items were excluded and not changed to Vintage items, such as badges, promotional items, and holiday items; in some cases these items that have been returned to users by Steam support are incorrectly assigned Vintage quality.

Unusual hats

See also: Hats, Unusual effects

Unusual hats are hats with particle effects attached to them.

Currently, the only methods of obtaining an Unusual hat are by unlocking a Mann Co. Supply Crate with a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key, or by trading for one. Unusual versions of the unique hats contained in Festive Winter Crate could also be obtained by unlocking the crate with a Festive Winter Crate Key during the Australian Christmas event.

Crafting together two Unusual hats will not produce an Unusual hat in return; it will simply produce a Unique hat.

Unusual misc slot items

As of the Dec.21 and Dec.22 patches, there are only two misc slot items that are able to have particle effects attached to them. Them being the Blighted Beak and Le Party Phantom. As such, this enables people who owns both a headgear unusual and a misc slot unusual to stack the particle effects, creating interesting combinations.

Scream Fortress Update

Main article: Scream Fortress

Two new Unusual items were introduced with this update: the Haunted Metal Scrap and the Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker. Besides having the Unusual quality attached to it, the Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker has no discerning attributes from the Eyelander.

Community items are special items given by Valve to individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the Team Fortress 2 community. Community items have the Community Sparkle particle effect attached and an attribute with a description string set to "Given to valuable Community Contributors". Additionally, those derived from the stock weapons receive an additional boost to their Phong shading exponent, resulting in the weapon having a more glossy appearance.

Like Community items, they have the "Community Sparkle" particle effect attached and an attribute with a description string set to "I made this!". See the Contribution page for when the items were added in-game.

Valve weapons are alternate versions of regular weapons given to Valve employees. All Valve weapons are Level 100. These weapons also have a special particle effect attachment called Flying Bits. Because of their nature as developer weapons, certain Valve items possess stacked item attributes as seen in the backpack example; however, these attributes are not a requirement of the Valve quality. The Valve weapon shown in the backpack example is Robin Walker's Rocket Launcher. It can be seen here.
