Self-illumination is a feature of the Source Engine that causes certain textures to appear to glow when in areas with little light. This effect is used to add to the appearance of certain items in Team Fortress 2.

- The Earbuds are entirely self-illuminated in order to reference Apple's iPod commercials, specifically those in which white Earbuds are worn by black silhouettes.
