The community's perception of what "subclass" is is wrong most of the time. A subclass, like the name suggests, is a way of playing a class that is distinct from the original class and could become its own class. The Demoknight is the only subclass in the game, because it has weapon variety, has multiple weapons for multiple slots, and plays wildly different from the base class (Demoman). What the community thinks of as subclasses are in reality playstyles. This leaves only your melee equippable, thus creating the subclass.

These are the most common ones I can think of, but one thing that all of these share in common is that none of them deviate from the core gameplay of the base class (or at least keep several core mechanics in place), none of them have multiple weapons specifically made for it, and for the ones that do have multiple weapons (e.g. Gunspy) it's usually only in one slot. While playstyles like the Battle Engi do have multiple weapons that are usable for it (Shotgun, Panic Attack, Widowmaker) they are very much usable in a regular loadout too. While the Demoknight weapons can all be used separately, several of them work with each other. The [[Ali Baba Wee Booties]] and [[Bootlegger]] both give benefits when equipped together with a shield (leaving only the melee weapon), the [[Demoman shield]]s give specific Crit bonuses to melee weapons, the [[Tide Turner]] specifically gives back extra charge on melee kill, the [[Eyelander]] and its reskins increase the shield bash damage, the [[Claidheamh Mòr]] increases the shield charge duration and gives 25% of your charge back per kill, and the [[Persian Persuader]] is specifically created to ditch your primary/secondary weapons for boots and a shield. On top of all of this, the switch speed changes on all swords is completely negated when using a boots and a shield and there is an unused feature where the melee range of a Demoman is increased during a charge.
