The Wrench

I've never heard of this weapon. i'm guessing it's fake. Darkman 4 01:02, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind, its legit. Darkman 4 01:03, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
This is all only speculation, I'll clean it up. -Firestorm 01:04, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

I swear I'll rage if this is another service medal... Delicious cake 01:26, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
It looks like it is, considering the line: "TF_HUD_Event_GoldenWrench_C" "%s1 has found Golden Wrench no. %s2!"
This means they are going to be numbered. They might simply be rare. I guess we'll find out soon. -Firestorm 01:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Soon enough, I hope. I'm sleepy. Also SPUF is a mess right now. Delicious cake 01:31, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Also "TF_HUD_Event_GoldenWrench_D" "%s1 has destroyed Golden Wrench no. %s2!", which implies that you can actually lose it. Thus I suppose it will be re-obtainable somehow (OMG trading system?) — WindPower 01:41, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Nah, every weapon and item can be destroyed, I think. Delicious cake 01:44, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Valve could just be trolling us, tho. Delicious cake 01:53, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Then they're doing a pretty good job. Vi3trice 01:53, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Is it a reskin or a shiny new model? Delicious cake 01:56, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Reskin. Annnd this is just in, one of the UI HUD files that were added in the update seems to hint toward a gamemode. Man with the Golden Wrench? Vi3trice 01:57, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Can be Found

Check out the golden wrench at tf2items.net with extended mode enabled. "Can be found = yes". It can be found through the drop system! -Firestorm 01:58, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

So this leaves two options: Either Valve is trolling us and it's an engi update weapon, or Valve is double-trolling us and they'll change the weapon attributes later/inb4 service medal. Delicious cake 02:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
At this point on, we should have gotten used used to it. We always end up trolled. Vi3trice 02:02, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
OR: Maybe the drop system will be changed to drop Golden Wrenches only with a 100% chance of getting one, for a limited time. So it would be like the service medal, but you'll have to be in-game to get it. Delicious cake 02:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Never mind that: http://www.tf2items.com/allitems.php?d=1 . Value "150" is mysterious. Vi3trice 02:06, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
You can craft it with an engineer token: http://www.tf2items.com/crafting/blueprints.php. Too bad there's no way to get one right now. Delicious cake 02:13, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Not to asume anything but perhaps the [1=150] is infact the chance of the item being the gold-wrench per-drop?:. Hyenadip
No, the 150 = 1 means that attribute 150 (Probably the "turn enemy into gold") Is activated. Check out some of the other items -Firestorm 03:44, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Valve's probably keeping an eye on SPUF and this page and laughing as we try to figure this out... They'll probably give us another clue tomorrow or something! Delicious cake 03:48, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure this won't be a new Gentlemanne's Service Medal. One, because it's a weapon and not a hat/misc., two because of the "destroyed message", and three, because it will probably have gameplay-changing impacts (for example, picking up the golden statue gives them their max number of HP as Metal? That would make sense, though it would encourage Engineers to go wrench-fu kamikaze more often, which often ends in disaster.) — WindPower 15:12, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

So maybe it's a weapon can only be used in that assumed "Man with the Golden Wrench" gamemode, the numbers having something to do with score or something? I'm thinking of CS:S gungame as I'm writing this. Delicious cake 15:19, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

It's Australium alright.

I'm pretty damn sure it's actually made of Australium. I mean, the day it's released a comic comes out showing a metal very similar to gold, I don't think it's a coincidence. --Jojje 17:51, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

TRIVIA ADD! -- Smashman... (ts) 17:53, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Aye, as I've been saying to the people I've been talking to about the story. It seems rather obvious. Australium has the power to transform and adapt into different forms and states. So if this wrench is indeed made from that element, it would make sense that it is transforming flesh into it's seemingly default gold like nature. Kind of creepy and Midas like. Infi^ 18:34, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Item description points toward it as well. "Imbued with an ancient power"? That sounds like Australium to me, mate. Vi3trice 18:42, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

I Really Never Knew My Video Would Be THIS Popular

Really, my video got 30,000 views in less than a day, which is 8,000 more than my Super Smash Flash 2 v0.5b Gameplay video, which was up for almost a year now. AbeX300 19:13, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

The beauty of this wiki. -- Smashman... (ts) 19:14, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Itʻs also the beauty of being one of the first to make a video heh. Might also be worth noting that you can test out the "turn to gold" attribute, using the TF2items plugin for Sourcemod. Instead of copying over files etc. Then again, itʻs only easier if youʻre a server owner I suppose. Benjamuffin 19:49, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I tried copying the attribute to other weapons. Didn't work. Odd. -- Smashman... (ts) 19:50, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I noticed that too. I guess itʻs hard coded to the wrench. I was looking forward to using it on the Sniper Rifle. Benjamuffin 21:50, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Possible situational stats?

In messing around with the golden wrench on the practice game, it feels like a noticeable difference in two aspects. (Note: "Feels", I don't have any numbers to back this up, and it could just be my game edged on one side of the damage range in a weird way.)

Anyway...

It seemed like I was taking extra damage from pyros, but destroying enemy enemy buildings was a super-easy. (Talking homewrecker speed to take down enemy buildings.) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Starfyredragon (talk) • contribs)

I did sign, just in the middle. Sorry for confusion, I'm forgetful with signatures on most wikis. ^^; Bad habit, I know. Starfyredragon 21:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC) Although so far it seems just an amusing re-color for the wrench with an additional death effect. That's not unlock worthy... possibly no stats for it in system yet? Starfyredragon 21:11, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

That's all it is. It's not an unlock, it's a troll. -- Smashman... (ts) 21:12, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Seems like an aweful lot of work for a troll - the work of turning people to gold part, I mean, not the reskin (I saw in my game occasionally enemies when hit would fall to the ground, and hit like they had been turned to gold, although it wasn't reliable. People thought the Jarate was a troll as well. I personally think we're getting to see an item that will be released, but we only get to see its visuals, not its stats. I shall also speculate that the final model will change somewhat (since, at the moment, it's really just a skin). Starfyredragon 21:23, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Although I have to toot my own horn... I totally called and came up with a golden wrench idea long long long ago. I'm totally looking forward to having a shiny version of this weapon! ^_^ (see post three: [1]) Starfyredragon 21:36, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
As much as Iʻd love to believe that, gold reskins are pretty common to the point of people finding them unoriginal now. So any number of people have probably made a Golden Wrench. Benjamuffin 21:53, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Think again. [2]. In the forums, they got people submitting their ideas to a stickied thread, which when then compiled in the site I just linked to. Search the word "Gold". You'll only find it once, it's from me, and specifically the improved version of the golden wrench I sent to them a bit later. *User starfyredragon does a little dance* Starfyredragon 22:02, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
An idea thread isn't exactly the best place... Just look at any places where you can find actual customization, not ideas, and you'll find plenty of golden weapons. It's actually cliche, heh. Vi3trice 22:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Possibly true (I will assume it is despite lack of link to any such customization), but I would assume those gold customizations are reskins without actually making the weapons act 'goldlike', and more for just visual effect. What I suggest in my idea on the thread is the effects a weapon made of gold would have (heavier, generally less effective, but also generally more carefully crafted and so allows for more finesse, etc.) Also, I'll point out that Valve has made note of, in the past, that they pull some ideas from the forums. And in the engineer sticky idea thread, mine is the only golden weapon at the point the update was released. So my point stands, and I get to keep my happy dance. ^_^ *Starfyredragon dances while singing 'shiny gold wrench shiny gold wrench' and giggling like a happy schoolgirl* Starfyredragon 22:14, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
I just think, to claim the idea as yours when there are so many other possible authors (including Valve themselves) is a little forward. Benjamuffin 22:18, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Also, you wanted examples of the constantly done gold customization? Hereʻs a Golden Wrench made 5 months ago Golden Wrench Skin Benjamuffin 22:20, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
To claim an idea as my own when I demonstratively came up with it? No, I consider that quite reasonable. I won't deny its possible for someone else to come up with the same idea independently, but I can rightly claim I came up with the idea, have demonstrated in the area I was in that I was the only one that came up with it at the time within the sphere of influence I was interacting with. The thread was stickied by valve admins, that's the thread I submitted it to, and in that thread, mine is the only one that suggests a gold wrench. And valve had mentioned they were looking in the forums for ideas. I have every right to claim I came up with the idea, as mine was the only golden wrench in an area where valve said they were looking for ideas, so quit trying to rain on my parade, I brought an umbrella. ^_^ *continues happy dance* Besides, last time Valve pulled an idea from the forums and multiple people were the source for the idea, as I understand it, everyone who was an idea source got shiny weapons. So I'm not saying others won't get a shiny weapon, just saying I'll probably be among the ones that do. Starfyredragon 22:28, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
That's a sweet skin that guy made. I suspect he's dancing about as much as I am, expecting a Shiny Wrench as well. Starfyredragon 22:32, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
The huge defensive paragraph wasnʻt necessary. We are civil people here and I pushed no venom into my response. If they chose your idea, then so be it. And if they chose multiple peoples idea, then so be that too. My issue is, for all we know, they came up with it themselves, so while you DID indeed also come up with the same idea, I just took issue with you posting here claiming to be itʻs author. "Although I have to toot my own horn... I totally called and came up with the golden wrench idea..." The way you put it implied this, especially as this is a wiki, a place for documenting fact on a subject. Thereʻs no certainty that itʻs even a community weapon. However if it is, and if they give you some form of reward, then more power to you, and well done etc :). Benjamuffin 22:40, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay. It's really just my point that I actually sent them this idea via forums back in March (which is, obviously a fact, so I can put it up here.). I really hope the golden wrench idea is a compilation of several people's ideas, so multiple people can get shiny golden wrenches. My hope is that they give one to me, anyone who emailed them a golden wrench idea prior (or similarly sent them the idea), people who did the skins, and the people who cracked that awesome mystery they put together. Although my original post said 'a' golden wrench idea. (Although it shows that got changed somewhere along the line, I'm changing it back.)
Fair enough. Also that correction was my bad. I accidentally removed a bunch of letters out of your sentence when copying it to quote, so rewrote the missing bit. It was only about 5-6 letters, so I guess I got the word wrong (though either way it seems the meaning is the same). Benjamuffin 23:26, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Frankly, that's a lot of text just to say that you had an idea about a golden wrench and want a part of it too. Vi3trice 23:24, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Indeed. You also forgot to sign your post again Starfyredragon.Benjamuffin 23:26, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
It wasn't originally, it just kinda turned into a conversation. And when you get me talking, I can be a very wordy person ^^; (And Saying I came up with 'a golden wrench idea' is different than saying I came up with 'the golden wrench idea'. It's like the difference of saying "I created a net" (such as the one I put together in my home) v.s. saying "I created the net" (which would indicate the one we all use and love everyday of our lives). I may or may not have been part of the inspiration for valve's golden wrench. I frankly have no clue. All I know is that I tried to inspire them to make a golden wrench, and they made a golden wrench, and that makes me happy. And knowing the Valve guys and their apparent good nature (except when it comes to randomly firing their employees or turning them into leather hats as some blog posts would indicate), I suspect even if my idea wasn't an inspiration for their idea at all in anyway and they somehow never saw my posts in their stickied thread, if I point out I tried to send them a golden wrench idea and show them the links, they'll probably let me have a shiny golden wrench. (And probably tell me whether it was just coincidence, or if they did get some inspiration from me.) Either way would make for a fun story to friends and I'd get to run around with a shiny golden wrench. (Or should it be called a shiny shiny golden wrench since gold is already shiny? :s And would shiny shiny be additive, so just extra shine, multiplicative meaning it's like a mirror that makes things brighter, or shiny to the power of shiny meaning it'd be like looking at the sun? *Starfyredragon wanders off, mumbling to himself in a long diatribe at bout the effects of making something shiny shiny before getting distracted by flowers.* ) Starfyredragon 23:42, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Now that looks like verbose to me. Vi3trice 23:45, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Yea, again, "I can be a very wordy person." It's a character trait I.... you know what? I'm going to stop there. (You have no idea how hard that is for me.) Starfyredragon 23:52, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding practicality of coding

I've seen some people dismiss this as impossible based on the stated on-kill effect - turning someone into gold - requiring a lot of coding work for what might be a minor vanity item (for all we know). Just wanted to point out - Garry's Mod has a tool that can instantly freeze a ragdoll's limbs, convert its material into metal (along with all that entails physics-wise), and color it shiny yellow, thus turning it into gold, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Golden Wrench used the exact same method, thus requiring almost no new coding work. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Starfyredragon (talk) • contribs)

Considering the nature of Source, it's more than perfect when it comes to "Done on the fly" features and things like that. Values like shaders in VMTs can be changed at all time, I don't see that's so hard in understanding that. The whole "freezing limbs in place" is a bit more complicated (Bone angles and such), but to make a long story short, GMod's Freeze Tool is probably the best example. Vi3trice 23:35, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
And considering one of the package deals is gmod + team fortress 2, I guess I could easily see them being close enough to be willing to trade code if Garry had already written it. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Starfyredragon (talk) • contribs)
True, though they did make TF2 in the first place. A whole game. Iʻm pretty sure they have the know how to throw something like that together without Garry. What may seem awkward to some, is probably incredibly easy to them. After all these years especially.

"More space than needed"

Rampant speculation, but could the "more space than needed" quote be referring to an Australium cache, as noted in some of the Engineer's grandfather's notes? This is the page I'm thinking of. Say, maybe, one of the Australium caches had way more empty space in it than it did Australium, meaning that it probably at one time held a lot more stuff that disappeared sometime before the modern Engineer located the cache. A reference to a lot of new weapons and whatnot being in the Engineer Update, maybe, like stuff from the Polycount Pack? -Carooe 03:58, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Some interesting perspectives, but too speculative to be added to the article (though I'm not sure that was your intention in the first place) — WindPower 06:58, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm guessing it's a reference to the lapse between the IDs of the Mercenary and the Golden Wrench (http://www.tf2items.com/allitems.php?d=1), could account for a primary and a secondary Delicious cake 07:48, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

No, it's not possible. It was possible as soon as the update was released, but DrunkenF00l asked Robin about it. Basically Robin said "FFUUU-" and it was patched out at their end. This is the story I am led to believe anyway. -- Pilk (talk) 14:34, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Everything above, but I like the mining light. :p Über Spycrab 17:57, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
In truth I know a few people that could have gotten the Golden Wrench before it was patched out. One Valve employee has an Engineer token in their backpack, and any Community Wrench holder could have sacrificed their wrench and rebuilt it with a class token, formed the Engineer token, chucked it in with a melee token and some scrap, and boom they would have owned the Golden Wrench before anyone else. Shame no one did, then again a Community weapon for a weapon that will eventually be out at some point is obviously a fairly stupid idea. Though it would have been hilarious to see the people's reactions when you're the only one in the Golden Wrench list, joining any server and using it. Infi^ 18:19, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

I thought it was always impossible to create an engineer token, since hats dont count towards the class tokens recipie.--Piemanmoo 20:05, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Another pre-update game like WAR!

Is it possible this wrench could be the staple of another in-game contest like the demo versus soldier WAR! game? For instance it could count the number of gold statues for RED and BLU teams with some kind of reward before the engineer update, or something along those lines. I would think that the text about the wrench breaking could be a hint towards this. SilVox 23:48, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Real or Server Modification?

A few days ago I was playing on the main Achievement Idle Negro server and I saw someone named 'charles barkley' with The Golden Wrench, it had the same attributes of turning victims into solid gold statues and had the same kill icon. I asked if it was real and he said that it was, but in a silly, sarcastic manner. But obviously I don't believe him. I went into spectator mode to watch him and it said "charles barkley is carrying: The Kritzkrieg - Level 8 Medigun - Imbued with an ancient power", meaning that it says a different weapon, different level but the "real" description. I told him that fact and he said it was buggy, which I don't believe again. Anyway has anybody else encountered a Golden Wrench and was it buggy like this? --Sinic 01:25, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Tales of Monkey Island is Telltale, Monkey Island 2 and its remake is Lucas Arts. Believe me, I've played them all. Do you think it's a coincidence that the Golden Wrench was released on the same day as the Engineer comic? It's not a promotional item. Not even slightly. -- Smashman... (ts) 22:56, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Well the Lucasarts guys are tight with Robin, so... (he plays on their server. Believe me, I've played with him there. And they contributed those items too.) Nineaxis 23:01, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
You do make a point. And now that I think about it. "Nerd ogle wench" Could refer to pirates. I hope not though, to be honest. -- Smashman... (ts) 23:09, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
It makes a lot of sense but I don't want this to be true :( — WindPower 23:13, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Also makes sense for the imbued with an ancient power, Australium just does what it does, while I'm pretty sure Monkey Island has all the mystical/voodoo/ancient power stuff (don't know, since I haven't played it). Am I the only one who doesn't mind Valve doing promotional items like this so long as they aren't gamechanging? Nineaxis 23:19, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
If it was really a Monkey Island item, then I would of preferred the Cursed Cutlass of Kaflu than the Golden Wrench. Vi3trice 23:21, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
"6:40 PM - Robin: they're not promotional items. They're entirely TF related." Dashed. Nineaxis 23:41, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
How could you get him to talk about it? :o — WindPower 00:08, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
"6:36 PM - nine: can I bug you about wrenches of a golden variety?" Subtle and suave, I know. Nineaxis 01:14, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Here's the conversation: File:Robin_on_wrenches.jpg Nineaxis 01:24, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
As I said. *smug* -- Smashman... (ts) 09:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Golden Wrenches dropping

GOLDEN WRENCHES, NOW. Some just got dropped on the server I was playing on. — WindPower 01:49, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

They don't seem to be numbered globally. The golden wrenches that dropped were number #2 and #3, so I think it's a per-server count. — WindPower 01:51, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
The message was shown to all servers. SO EXCITED. HOW ARE THEY BEING FOUND! O_O Benjamuffin 01:53, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
They do not drop using the standard drop system. An announcement is displayed on-screen in the middle of the screen to all players, and the announcer yells "SUCCESS!" — WindPower 01:54, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

There are a lot more than 11. In the server I was playing, about 5 of them dropped, and none of these players are on the tf2items list. They are numbered on a per-server basis, so I think tf2items is wrong. — WindPower 02:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

The talk on the steam forums suggests a few things, you get the wrench via crafting, you get the wrench via visiting a certain spot in a map. As well as suggesting that those that get the wrenches, their drop isnt announced to their server, but to every server. Possible we could try contact those with it and find trends?--RJackson 02:32, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
You're right, I didn't actually check if the player names displayed were actually on the server I was playing, and I checked the tf2items list against the scoreboard on the server I was playing. So I mgiht be wrong. — WindPower 02:34, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Man there's a lot of idea's floating around steam forums. It's almost impossible to get conclusive facts to update this wiki with.--RJackson 02:41, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
And yet I see a lot of threads on the forums pointing to this article as if it were a clear reference. Maybe it should really be mentioned that this is not set in stone yet. — WindPower 02:42, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree, is there something (similar to Template:Stub) we could throw up?
Template:Update seemed appropriate; I put it up.--RJackson 02:51, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
THEY ARE DROPPING. Robin enabled it in front of me. Was cool Nineaxis 02:45, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
I saw your conversation with him on SPUF, ninaxis. I'll be honest, I didn't really understand it. :(--RJackson 02:46, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
After that, he told me to join his server again, after fixing the "bug", and enabled the wrench drops Nineaxis 02:54, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, so they're now just randomly dropping? The 'burst' of drops was just some random bug?--RJackson 02:55, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
You lucky Nineaxis, 1) getting to talk with Robin, and 2) getting actual answers and acts on top of that. Looking at the item ID column on the tf2items page, I'd actually think the drops are done in manual batches. The IDs are so close together and they did drop all at once in the game. So Robin must have been like "let's do one drop" and then boom, a batch of them dropped. And then the next would drop the next time he feels like it — WindPower 02:57, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
If thats so I don't like it... :( Does anyone speculate that the drops happen to you even if your not online? Meter1060 05:59, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Robin said they aren't completely and totally random. Which may mean they drop in batches. But I dunno. It's weird. Nineaxis 03:07, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
If you guys didn't know [4] This is what the server-side announcements look like for when a user finds the wrench Hyenadip
Yeah we knew :). Plus I already uploaded an image of the message to the Golden Wrench gallery. Benjamuffin 17:26, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

someone new got it

100?

Seriously? Only 100? There were 11111 Medals handed out and people raged about THAT --Firestorm 20:07, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

It seems so. Although, the lack of footer on the main page leads me to think those pages aren't completed. I guess we best see how it pans out before making any changes.--RJackson 20:10, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Definitely made me rage. By the way, whomever added the "They're only dropping 25-a-day" thing, I removed it. Please don't post rumor as fact, and if it is fact, please post proof with it. Vekter 20:24, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
