Ammo, or ammunition, is a resource found on most maps that contributes to a player's firearm ammunition supply. Ammo is universal, meaning that ammo from any gun can be used in any other gun. For example, ammo acquired from a dropped Flamethrower will still be usable as Sniper Rifle ammo, and can also be used to fill the Cloak charge for the Spy's Invisibility Watch and Dead Ringer. This also means that the amount of ammo in a pick-up is applied to both your Primary and Secondary weapons, not just the one you currently have equipped. You cannot reload if you do not currently have any ammo.  If you expend your clip and reserve ammo, your weapon will be automatically unequipped and switched to another, and not be selectable until more ammo is obtained.

Pickup Type: Building & Ammo

Sources

Ammo pickups come in three different sizes. Each one refills a different percentage of their player's total ammo capacity. There are also several other sources of ammo that you may encounter:

Ammo boxes

All ammo boxes have a 10 second respawn time.

  • Small Ammo Pickup: Refills 20.5% of each weapon's ammo capacity (Slightly more than one fifth.)
  • Medium Ammo Pickup: Refills half (50%) of each weapon's ammo capacity
  • Large Ammo Pickup: Refills all (100%) of each weapon's ammo capacity
Dropped items
  • Weapons dropped from dead players: (refills 50% of max ammo)
  • Toolboxes dropped from dead Engineers: (refills ammo 100%)
Other sources
  • Dispensers
    • Level 1 – 20% / sec
    • Level 2 – 30% / sec
    • Level 3 – 40% / sec
    • Note: Dispensers will also refill your Cloak if, as a Spy, you disguise as the enemy team.
  • Carts: 20% / sec
  • Resupply Lockers: refills to 100% ammo for all weapon (as well as refilling your current magazine)
