Meet the Spy
SpyVidSplash.png
This Spy has already breached our defenses...
You've seen what he's done to our colleagues!
And worst of all:
He could be any one of us.
The BLU Spy on the RED Spy

Hailing from an indeterminate region of France, the Spy is an enthusiast of sharp suits and even sharper knives. Using a unique array of cloaking watches, he can render himself invisible or even fake his own death, leaving unaware opponents off-guard. His Disguise Kit lets him take on the form of any class on either team, allowing him to blend in while behind enemy lines before stabbing his unsuspecting "teammates" in the back. In fact, a swift backstab with any of the Spy's knives will kill most foes in a single hit - provided they aren't under the effects of any type of invulnerability, or some other form of immense damage reduction.

In addition to being able to swiftly assassinate key enemies, the Spy possesses the ability to disable and destroy Engineer-constructed buildings with his Sapper. Once attached to an enemy building, the Sapper disables and slowly drains health from the building. However, a Sapper can be removed by an Engineer, or Pyro wielding the Homewrecker, Maul, or Neon Annihilator.

The Spy is able to enter an enemy teleporter and can use this to make his way to the enemy team, and blend in amongst them.

Whereas most players can only see the names and health of their teammates, the Spy can observe the names and health of the enemy team as well, allowing him to relay useful intelligence. This ability is unique to only the Spy and a Medic carrying the Solemn Vow.

The Spy is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic strategy

Main articles: Spy tips, Spy strategy
Icon spy.jpg
  • Use your knife to backstab enemies from behind, killing them instantly.
  • Disguise yourself as an enemy with your Disguise Kit. Beware; attacking will remove your disguise.
  • Hit MOUSE2 to cloak and become fully invisible for a short period of time.
  • Use your Cloak to get behind enemy lines, and your disguise to move around amongst them.
  • Try to act like an enemy while disguised. Observe where enemy team members are, and disguise as one of them.
  • Help your team by placing your Sappers on enemy buildings to destroy them (Aim for enemy teleporters to help slow the opposition down). Disguises aren't lost when placing Sappers.
  • Your Sappers disable Sentry Guns before destroying them. Sap a Sentry Gun before attacking the Engineer or, if you are quick enough you could stab the Engineer and sap the Sentry Gun before it turns around.
  • Call for enemy Medics by hitting E while disguised to get some free health.
  • Disguise yourself somewhere hidden so that the enemy team don't see you change into one of their team players.
  • When disguised, avoid looking directly at or walking toward enemies so that they don't think that your trying to kill them.
  • Changing disguises after being caught and escaping can be useful in heightening your disguise, as the team is looking for the player you previously disguised as.

Bugs

Image of a Spy disguised as an Engineer, holding an Ambassador
  • Sometimes, the class the Spy is disguised as will appear to be carrying invisible or transparent weapons to the enemy team. This also includes weapons worn on the player, such as the Gunboats or Ali Baba's Wee Booties.
  • Sometimes but rarely, and especially if the Spy is disguised as Engineer, the enemy will still see the disguised Spy holding one of his weapons.
  • Sometimes, when the Spy is disguised as a Scout holding the Scattergun, the handle of the Scattergun will be a revolver handle. A similar occurrence appears with the Shortstop.
  • When exiting out of the current disguise in third person, the hats and miscellaneous items of the player the Spy is disguised as will appear on the Spy for a split second.
  • Rarely, disguised spies show up with a decapitated model. Also, sometimes players will show without their respective hats or styles.
  • Sometimes, when disguised as Sniper, arrows from the Huntsman will show up on their back regardless if the target has it equipped or not.
  • Sometimes, the Spy's left hand moving animation can animate faster than its default speed while the player is moving. This issue can be fixed by recording a demo and quickly stopping it.

Trivia

  • The Spy's voice actor Dennis Bateman also voices the Pyro class.
  • The idea for the Spy originally came from a Quake glitch, which caused players of the enemy team to appear as allies. [1]
  • The Spy is known to speak phrases in French, Spanish and Catalan.
  • The first BLU team Spy resembled Template:W.
  • In Poker Night at the Inventory, an image of the Spy makes a cameo as the Jack of Diamonds in the "Poker Night" and "Poker Night Alternative" decks, respectively.
    • The lower half of both cards have the Spy wearing the Engineer disguise mask on them.
  • The Spy makes an appearance in Worms: Reloaded as one of the forts; the rest of the fort is composed of Gravel Pit. In addition, the Spy's red balaclava is a selectable hat for the player's worms.
  • The Assassin class of Monday Night Combat has a promotional item with the Spy's disguise mask and the Scout's headset named "Bonk! Slash!".
  • The Spy, along with the Heavy and the Pyro, is a playable character as one character named "Team Fortress" in the PC version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Spy flies the airplane, whilst Pyro and Heavy drive the Standard car and boat respectively.
  • According to the Ap-Sap's dialogue, the Spy keeps his knife, revolver and sapper in a pocket of his suit.
  • The Spy has an English accent in his French voice lines.
  • As revealed in the comics, the Spy has false teeth where he hides tiny provisions and a miniature knife inside; this is seen in Unhappy Returns. In the same comic, his face was also partially shown, revealing that his hair is dark grey.
    • In Old Wounds, he briefly cracks a cyanide molar in an attempt to put him and Miss Pauling down before an interrogation (which he thankfully spits out before the effects take place).
  • According to the Spy, his tie is made of silk and costs $9,000, while dialogue in The Naked and the Dead reveals the Spy's suit to be a $10,000 custom-tailored Louis Crabbemarché jacket.
    • Crabbemarché loosely translates to "crab walking", a reference to the Spycrab fad.
  • A common running joke and theory is that the Spy is the Scout's father; this is shown in official media such as the Meet the Spy short and in-game domination lines. Official comics further stress this speculation, with the Heavy giving a passing comment that the Scout's father "disappears often", and "The Naked and the Dead" comic giving heavy implications of the Spy wanting to give the Scout a peaceful farewell before his "death", even calling him "son" while disguised as Tom Jones, and grieving when Scout dies.
