Changing the Googly Gazer's style
That's what I'm talking about!
The Scout on the new styles.

Styles are alternate versions of Headwear and Miscellaneous items. Introduced in the Hatless Update on April 14, 2011, styles enable the player to alter the visual form of the hat at any time. Styles applied to items do not affect the painted status or tradability of the item.

To change an item's style, select it in the Backpack menu and click the "Set Style" button. A window will appear prompting you to choose a style.

Current styles range from being alterations to an item's painting scheme or to having the item use a separate model entirely. Promotional items that were released in tiers, such as those of the Steam Treasure Hunt, have styles that mimic the appearance of the less advanced items in the series.

Bugs

  • When a style is active that mimics the appearance of another hat, the imitated hat is displayed when inspected by other players.
  • The Ghastlier Gibus is incorrectly placed if the Ghastly style is active. Some Sniper players take advantage of this to throw off headshots.
  • The Scotsman's Stove Pipe loses alot of its detail when the Garish and Overbearing style is active, similar to a lot of paintable hats before the December 2, 2010 Patch. The difference is noticeable even without paint.
  • After changing an item's style, it takes effect immediately, without having to respawn or touch a resupply cabinet. This may be intentional, as styles have no effect on gameplay.
  • When painting an item, the preview render will always show the original style, regardless of the one currently active.
