System messages

Team Fortress 2 features a global messaging system, which allows Valve to send notifications to all in-game players at once. These are referred to as system messages. The system has been used in the past, and is used today, for a variety of events including but not limited to:
- Obtaining a new item
- A Something Special for Someone Special ring being used
- Announcing maintenance periods
- Golden Wrench destructions
- Announcing Item server downtime
- Announcement of the Blood Brothers comic
A system message appears in both the text chat area and the notifications area, and is accompanied by a beeping sound.
System messages most often appear to all players on an individual server, excepting global events such as Golden Wrench drops or deletions or downtime announcements.
