WAY too many "references"

Whacking someone with a fish is a classic staple of slapstick comedy that is repeated in all kinds of works. This fish is not a reference to all the 50,000 things you've seen with fish-slapping in it. Someone please remove the unnecessary clutter in the Trivia section. Steviejoejimbob 19:04, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

"Invertebrate"?

"Having one's health completely drained by an invertebrate is even more morally depleting" Fish are vertebrates. I'd change this, but then the sentence would not carry the same connotation. --Highlighter 03:17, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Whoops, biology fail on my part. Replacing with "ectotherm" (cold-blooded). Toomai Glittershine 03:20, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

So...

What does it actually DO, anyway? -- MistahFixIt 01:27, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Counts the amount of times you slap people with it. That is all. Balthazar 01:28, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Lvl

It is a Level 42 Fish, but I can't edit so I'm going to leave it up to the moderators. CANPoo 02:15, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Possible 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' reference? -- MistahFixIt 02:30, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Hum..

Yeah, the kill stacking thing has bugged a lot of stuff out side of tf2. It has bugged out mostly mods like HLXCE, and a few other plug ins out there for source mod. Maybe valve will change the way that the damage log is displayed or the events that it shows when the stacking happens.

Alinay 02:20, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Kill message

Every time you hit somebody with the Mackerel, a kill-message in the upper right corner is created or updated, confirming the humiliation of the victim being beaten with a fish. So first hit shows "attacker <mackerel icon> x1 victim" second hit shows "attacker <mackerel icon x2> victim" and so on... When the victim is killed the message looks like this: "attacker <mackerel icon> FISH KILL! victim>".El duderino 02:28, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Very fun to use. Anyway, a couple things. In Arena, since each hit displays a kill notification, it counts as a kill. Meaning if you are the first one to do damage it gives you first blood. Rhonlore 01:23, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Interesting. That arena bug sounds like something Valve might be patching up soon. ;-)-RJ 02:39, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Definitely something that needs to be fixed. --Firestorm 03:18, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
One thing I have noticed at the moment is that each hit also counts towards the "A year to remember" achievement with a kill counting as 2 towards your progress. Worm104 13:39, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Not only that, it adds toward kill streaks in HLstatsX; you can easily rack up ultrakills and raise your ranking.Alphard 10:51, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Damage

Is the damage right in that it's higher than the regular bat? I don't think that's right. Lems 00:01, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Taunt

They should totally make this [1] the Holy Mackerel taunt.--Piippo 17:35, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Humiliation

Honestly, i think the Fish feels more humiliated about being a killer...--Awesome Weegee 03:53, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Viewmodel Glitch

This will probably be patched out soon, but if you equip the Holy Mackerel and then swap your viewmodels to left-handed mode, the fish becomes heavily glitched, almost imploding.

A screencap in case it gets patched before anyone notices CaptMurasa 20:03, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

This is already expressed as trivia in this article. If and when they do patch it, feel free to move this point underneath a 'Previous Changes' section on the page. Add the picture as well if you want, it will serve as a good indicator to those who cannot imagine an inside out fish.--Focusknock 20:19, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
It's because of the jigglebones. as a tip, DONT DO THAT D: --Ikimono1 23:26, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I added the image as a link in the Trivia section, as I think a lot of people will be looking for one upon reading about it. I know I did... Will-T 06:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Another weird glitch; Middle of fish looks twisted/squeezed, like a sponge. No screenshot, since it comes and goes. --AileTheAlien 21:07, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Got one! Weirdly enough, pressing Print Screen seems to fix it for a while... --AileTheAlien 21:12, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Smaller area spread?

"This weapon has a smaller area spread than the default Bat, therefore enabling it to deal more damage. "

Where is the evidence for this claim? As far as I know both the bat and fish are identical aside from the fish counting each time you hit someone with it Steviestar3 17:30, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

To my mind it makes sense that the fish and bat are identical, but this fact seems to be a little bit too specific to have just been written on a whim. Perhaps it warrants some testing? I wouldn't know how to go about it, but I'm sure someone here does. (Also, new topics of discussion should be at the bottom of the page.) -- User Alex2539 Sig.png -- 17:35, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
I've always enjoyed testing out the more technical aspects of the game, but I'm not sure, exactly what is meant by "area spread"; if this term is clarified, I'd be glad to provide some testing.Fox McCloud 09:48, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
As there is much speculation to this, and the function times are recorded as the same as the Bat anyway, I've removed this for now.--Focusknock s 09:55, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

trivia edit

"* Based on its appearance and the creator's information, the fish is an Atlantic mackerel or Boston Mackerel, a reference to the Scout's heritage." - Whether this is an actual reference to the scout's heritage seems to be pure speculation. I'm on the fence about deleting this one. ::Scurve User scurve monkey sm.gif:: 09:32, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm definitely not seeing the resemblance. Boston Mackerel, from what I can see, have a green hue to them. The Holy mackerel definitely is red/pink tinted. The shape also leans more toward the Atlantic. If I had to make a judgment call, I'd say that it's Atlantic, and therefore not really worth noting. Regardless, it's still largely speculation unless someone would like to make a case otherwise... I'm taking it down. CptObvious 15:54, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Removed Trivia

Hey guys. I removed the trivia about the number 42 having to do with the book. My reasoning was that this is merely speculation. Please read the trivia guidelines for more information on why this is not good trivia.

Also, if you want to add it back in, please talk to me and we'll discuss it. If you have a valid point to make about this, please leave it on my talk page. Hojung1996 13:20, 31 July 2011 (PDT)

I think that the trivia is slightly speculative but I do believe the link is there. 42 is an odd number to pick for the level and the number is quite famously associated with the Hitchhikers guide. Normally this would be a meaningless connection but one of the books in the series was called 'So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish', the Babel fish in the series, the Salmon of Doubt, any of which may have been an inspiration. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 13:28, 31 July 2011 (PDT)
ok. But it still does sound speculative. I don't know what to do about this. Hojung1996 14:22, 31 July 2011 (PDT)
I'd say there's enough reason there to put the trivia back in - even to say it is possibly a reference. » Cooper Kid (Blether · Contreebs) 16:56, 31 July 2011 (PDT)
Before putting it back in, is there a way to reword it? Here is the original trivia:
  • The Holy Mackerel's level, 42, might be a reference to Douglas Adams' book series, Template:W, in which 42 is considered to be the answer to "the ultimate question of Life, The Universe, and Everything".
    • Two further references are the books Template:W, of which the title was taken from a line in the original book, a title in the book series and Template:W, a posthumous collection of various essays and an unfinished novel written by Adams.

I guess the problem i had with this is that it says "might." How could we change the wording to possibly make it better?

I would be confident enough to say it is a reference and not just a possible one. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 09:00, 1 August 2011 (PDT)

Fish slapping dance?

I posted the same trivia a few monts ago and it got removed. Why is it good trivia now all of a sudden? Kazzymodus 13:00, 15 November 2011 (PST)

EDIT: Agg, glitch post!

Best and Worst

This weapon...So incredibly amazing, yet so useless. The Holy Mackerel is IDENTICAL to the bat, so there's no point. It is just incredibly fun to use, and the Special Delivery item set is great. The preceding unsigned comment was added by The King Moose (talk) • (contribs)

Festive holy mackeral using incorrect impact sounds

The festive variant of the Holy Mackeral uses an incorrect impact sound as if it's made of metal.Black Mesa 13:50, 28 December 2012 (PST)

Different kill icon when used to destroy buildings

So last night, I added a second kill icon, the regular Holy Mackerel kill icon without the 'FISH KILL!' text, which appears when a building is destroyed with the Holy Mackerel. However, shortly afterward it was removed under the basis that as of a patch in September 2010, the Holy Mackerel doesn't appear in the killfeed when it's used to destroy a building. I'm a bit skeptical of this, last night I tried doing just that (destroying a building with the holy mackerel) and the kill icon I described appeared. I was using a strange festive Holy Mackerel so I don't know if that would have affected it, but it did the same thing with a unique Unarmed Combat. I'll post a screenshot later. EDIT 2: No one's responded to this yet, so I'll go ahead and restore the changes I made earlier. If anyone has anything else to say please feel free to add on to my post here. Ivor 18:52, 7 January 2013 (PST)
I'm the guy who removed that because in October 6, 2010 Patch, it stated clear that it will no longer add to the kill feed when hitting a building. I think it's not need to add. I'll wait for more suggestion from another user. User Hinaomi Hinaomi-sig.png Hinaomi (talk) • (contributions) 03:32, 8 January 2013 (PST)
Ok, i'll stand by. Ivor 04:47, 8 January 2013 (PST)

No kill icon for buildings or Dead Ringer demonstration

Sorry to make you guys have to redo it, but as you guys like the videos as accurate as possible, shouldn't the video show the fish hits or fish kill not registering on a building or Dead Ringer Spy? You've redone videos for less trivial reasons. Killicon ap-sap.png User:Rainbowsnivy (Talk with me) Killicon ap-sap.png 03:44, 14 December 2013 (PST)

Post it on the Weapon demo discussion page instead of here. You'll get more feedback there than here. Ashes (talk) 14:01, 14 December 2013 (PST)

Remove "Holy Mackerel concept by 5p3tch'

Its totally useless, dont add any information, this should me removed... PaoCharmoso (talk) 00:57, 12 April 2014 (PDT)

It's "concept art", concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in (but not limited to) films, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product. So why it needs to be remove? User Hinaomi Hinaomi-sig.png Rikka Takanashi (talk) • (contributions) 03:32, 12 April 2014 (PDT)
