Spamming is when a player repeatedly fires their weapon in the hope of hitting an enemy player while utilizing little or no tactical consideration or skill. Spamming may also refer to the act of doing something repeatedly which may be legitimate, such as repeatedly laying down Sappers on an enemy building within a short period of time, or annoying, such as spamming the server with repeated chat messages or voice commands.

Spamming is often associated with Soldiers and Demomen due to the nature of their primary weapons, though patches to these classes' ammo capacity has reduced this problem somewhat.

It is not to be confused with:

  • Laying down suppressive fire to prevent entry into an area.
  • Searching for cloaked Spies by firing randomly.
  • Standing next to a Dispenser firing continually to achieve the above.
  • Continuously sapping an enemy building in order to destroy it.

This technique is considered to be annoying to some players due to its perceived effectiveness without required skill.

However, spamming can be considered an effective technique in certain situations, such as spamming choke points on maps to block enemies from going through them. This is somewhat similar to how a Demoman can place stickies to block off paths. It will force people to find alternate routes to their objectives, as they might not be able to survive a barrage of rockets or grenades.
