Pictogram nope.png Nope.avi We already had a huge debate on the usefulness of major languages on the IRC (being not as important as english in terms of page views, what I'm against to limit usefulness to only the number of page views), so eventhough it's funny, I don't see the point in adding a not major language... Requieres too much work for really nothing! Tturbo 18:44, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Pictogram neutral.png Neutral Well it would be fun and a pretty nice in-joke, but i don't know how would it look besides "mmph" We could make it word-ish like saying football helmet in the form of "phudda mmphet" or something, It would require a lot of work and creativity but how many people would see the pyro language? I'm undecided on this one... Emperor Pear Head 03:21, 20 April 2012 (PDT)

Translation this page

Hey all, need translation this page? Help:Language translation/ruDaimoN (talk) s 21:44, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Vietnamese as a supported language.

The Vietnamese playerbase of TF2 isn't alot, but they sure are not low on number either. I think I can translate this wiki into Vietnamese - helping players from my country to give a different view to this class-based multiplayer FPS, just like they used to play Counter-Strike. If given permission, I will proceed translating immediately. --- ShadowRolando. 11:46, 12 November 2010 (UTC) I can help you translate into Vietnamese.

Merging the two portuguese languages

I think that it's not necessary to have a whole lot of duplicate articles for both the Portuguese and the Brazilian Portuguese languages, I'm a brazilian and I can assure you the differences are really rare, it's like having articles for both the American English and the British one. A brazilian can perfectilly read a Portugal portuguese article and vice-versa. What do you think? Allukard 07:36, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm portuguese (Portugal) and i think that separate translations are preferable, because of certain item names, mixed translations or because i am just that picky TugaMiguelPT Gentlemen 12:20, 1 December 2012 (PST)

Thai Language?

Thai language is one of the supported language for Steam Translation Server.

I've notice that Thai language isn't one of the allowed list yet, would you kindly consider?

If you have seen statistic page about usage of languages in Steam version with Thai language being at the bottom. Here are some explanation :

1. Most of Thai people convert to use English version due to the problem of spray importing, which somehow doesn't compatible upon using Thai language 2.They accidentally skipped at the installing process and do not know that such function existed.

As one of Thai, I understand that Thai are weak at English due to the fact that the country have never been colonized by the western power. When using Steam, few words they can cope with by using Dictionary ,but to reading the whole articles here, I believe they could not.

Please consider Regards --Meenchawit 16:24, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Thai is supported on STS, there's no reason not to have the wiki translated with the official names to thai. If you can help to it, just go ahead. :) Tturbo Killicon ambassadorhs unused.png (Speech voice.png / Intel neutral pickedup.png) 09:50, 23 April 2012 (PDT)
So that means you allow to translate in Thai but use English name? Killicon black rose.png Hinaomi 19:05, 25 April 2012 (PDT)
No, you can translate to Thai, but you have to use the official thai names (the ones translated and applied from the official Steam Translation Server) not your own translations, to be consistent over the entire wiki and with what's in the game. List of articles

I almost finished a list with all the articles on the wiki. I think that it could be really useful for translations, so I want to put it on the wiki. It has more than 850 articles.

I think that it could be really good if there was a page with all the articles, and using marks to say which pages arent created, which arent finished and, when the english version are changed, it also say it, so everyone would notice which articles needs to be updated. I dont know how to make this, but well, better say it than not.

Obviously, I would make the list, on english and all the other languages. It will take a lot of time, but I dont care. Who is with me?Sr Domi 21:02, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Request for a Lithuanian section.

Lithuania has a preety insane tf2 comunity if you count the fact that there are only about 3 million people living here. But that is not the point, I have heard plenty of complaints that lithuanians can't understand english or russian or any other supported languages. So I am requesting Lithuanian to become an official TF2 wiki language. Best regards, Elpacho 08:05, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Mandarin translators?

I was wondering if anyone knows who the other mandarin translators are? I know there are discussion pages for the other languages (including the one for traditional Chinese), but does anyone know where I can find the simplified Chinese translators or editors? It'll be nice if we could discuss on the standardization of some of the terms. =/ Luvi 08:20, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure of any active editors to simplified Chinese articles, but you can view the most recent edits to pages here; there seems to be a few other editors occasionally making pages. seb26 08:25, 1 March 2011
I do know good Simplified Mandarin, and has a decent grasp on English to be able to translate articles, but I don't know how would one type Asian characters. I would like to help if I knew though. T.test 05:37, 16 September 2011 (PDT)

How to handle quotations in translations?

Hey, I been starting to translate articles into Swedish. But how am I supposed to handle quotes? The charcthers all speaks English in the Swedish version, so I have left the original English quote but translated everything around it. Like on the recently translated Name Tag/sv article. Is that the right way to do it, seeing how a Swedish player would be hearing the English voices anyway? Ailure 11:38, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

That's the way I'll do it. There are two possibilities mainly : 1) You don't translate the responses but everything around it (Class name and explanation). 2) You translate the quote and everything else. I can tell you what we did for french, we used the french audio when there was one, and when we didn't have it, we translated the quote in our own words. But that's because there is a french localization (and voices), it may not be the same with swedish. Still, what you did is correct. Killicon ambassadorhs unused.png Tturbo (T/C) 12:07, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
Alright, good to know what I did was right :). Unless Valve adds subtitles (unlikely), I will keep the quotes English in future articles. Ailure 17:52, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

URLs aren't matching up

Hi, noticed that a few urls aren't correct which causes ppl to think they aren't translated when they are. for example there is no wiki_cap/fr . its under wiki_hat/fr which causes confusion if a user just adds /fr to the end of the page. i just spent an hour translating when i found this out. I think that the urls should be normalized to avoid having this happen. Nibelhim 08:05, 27 September 2011 (PDT)

Translating non translated names?

If the name of an items hasn't been translated to my language in the game, should I come up with my own translation here on the wiki or keep it to the english name?LiquidFire 03:41, 15 April 2012 (PDT)

Generally you can look in the localization files for the names Valve uses, which we use here on the Wiki. Otherwise, the English name is the default (Ex: Bonk Boy/fr) User Upgrade Signature.png 03:44, 15 April 2012 (PDT)
You must not make personal translations of item names. You generally wait to have the official translation come out of the STS (which updates the localization files). If you want to have it automatically translated on specific pages you can you the use the Dictionary via the {{Item name}} or {{Item link}} templates. You better have a word with the Localization Moderator for your language, so he can explain you that more precisely. Serbian Language

I speak Serbian, and i know a bunch of Serbian gamers, so should we add it? (/sr). Me and my friends can help out... Here is a example of Serbian language (if anyone doesn't know it) from Minecraft wiki [1] Emperor Pear Head 03:12, 20 April 2012 (PDT)

From this article:
Pictogram comment.png Note: there are no plans to add support for any further languages at this time. Support for the translation of articles into a specific language will now only be considered if there are localization files present in the game. The reasoning for this is that the workload for translators who do not have support from the Steam Translation Server (in the form of word lists, nouns, etc, and proper discussion channels) is significantly higher. The amount of active translators is also less, meaning pages can quickly become out of date.

English (uk) translation?

Hi TF2 Wikiers!

Being Relatively new to all this stuff, I thought if it would be a good idea to launch a UK English Version of the wiki, as Portuguese and Portugese-Brasil have their own pages, and the translation of the wiki will only take a little bit of minor editing.

What does everyone else think?

--Clockwork 10:34, 28 May 2012 (PDT)

English (UK) is not a supported language to the game and barely holds for a version itself since the US version is pretty much simular. The American version (US) works fine and I bet that there's alot of people speaking British would mostly disagree with a new section. From my point of view it was a good idea but it's unecessary. User Ravecrib9t4 Signature Logo.JPG TNS 11:36, 28 May 2012 (PDT)
I don't think the difference between the two forms for Portuguese is as trivial as with the English versions, either. Freakie 12:53, 28 May 2012 (PDT)
There is quite a large difference between Brasil Portugese and Portugese though. The differences between English and 'American' is fairly negliable considering the fact both can perfectly understand eachother (as long as the Brits don't use words like faq for cigarettes lol). So yeah, it seems unnecessary. Warlike 12:57, 28 May 2012 (PDT)

Status of Czech Language?

Hey guys, maybe a dumb question, but what is the status of Czech then? I would like to contribute but there is a notice that it is being somehow translated? If so, who is doing that? Knize.Vladivoj 12:01, 1 September 2012 (PDT)

You could start here: Team_Fortress_Wiki:Reports/Missing_translations/cs all missing for the wiki. But disambiguation pages dont always need translations, better focus on main updates or other directly and highly needed articles. General overview for all languages: Team_Fortress_Wiki:Translation_progress and you can go there even more into the detail: Team_Fortress_Wiki:Translation_progress/Stats/cs < this allows you to focus more on what is missing. δ³Σx² 12:07, 1 September 2012 (PDT)

Mmmkay. Now one more problem - how about the form? Should I translate the English version as closely as possible? Also, do I use a polite form of You/you or informal? (It makes difference in Czech between formal and informal style) Knize.Vladivoj 12:59, 1 September 2012 (PDT)

As a wiki should be more or less plain, direct, unambiguous, and specific; it's better to translate "as closely as possible" as the english pages already satisfy these conditions
I'd say informal ("tykání") as most of the czech pages is already written this way
