— The Soldier

” |
Upon taunting with the Equalizer or Escape Plan: the Soldier throws his weapon over his shoulder dramatically, cracks his knuckles, rips a grenade from his bandolier and pulls the pin. The resulting explosion gibs the Soldier himself, and any enemy too slow, unaware, or simply unfortunate enough to be within range.
This taunt destroys any enemy players and buildings that are within approximately 1.8 meters of the explosion. The area of effect of this taunt allows the Soldier to kill multiple enemies, including any that are next to or even behind the taunting player. Enemies that inflict damage to the taunting Soldier before the explosion are credited with a Kamikaze kill.
Performing the Kamikaze taunt with the Lumbricus Lid equipped causes the "Hallelujah" sound clip from the Worms games to play, as well as a unique kill icon being used, while using the Holy Hand Grenades.
As with most kill taunts, this taunt can be used to kill enemy players during humiliation and stalemates.
The taunt functions as an explosion of 500 base damage/320 self damage at the location where the Soldier completes the taunt, which accounts for the taunt’s unusual ability to damage Skeletons and the various means for the Soldier and enemies surviving the taunt and accomplishing jumps, including Invulnerabilty, Vaccinator blast resistance ÜberCharge, MvM blast resistance upgrade, or sufficient Overheal augmented by some means (Battalion's Backup, Upgrades, etc.).
The Soldier can avoid killing himself while still doing the taunt if he is somehow launched/knockbacked into the air with a sizable amount of health remaining. This will cause him to gain extra height, as if he was rocket jumping mid-air, while still maintaining his momentum and receiving reduced self-inflicted damage. All enemies unfortunate enough to come within the blast radius will still be gibbed.
Compression blasting the taunting Soldier can relocate the center of the blast, but usually completely cancels the taunt.
The kill icon for the Lumbricus Lid taunt was contributed by Psyke .

Bugs
- The taunt is recognized as a rocket jump by some achievements. For example, one can earn Death From Above by killing two opponents at once with the taunt.
- The player does not see a Bombinomicon explosion after using the Kamikaze while wearing the Bombinomicon.
- If the Soldier raises the grenade through a low ceiling during detonation, he will survive and still kill the players above.
- The explosion can kill enemies on the other side of a closed setup gate, or even the other side of a wall.
- If the Soldier explodes near a Scout who is under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch, the game will register that he has killed the Scout, but the Scout will survive.
- You can survive in Mann vs. Machine if you buy enough resistances.
Trivia
- Kamikaze's (神風, lit. "divine wind") were suicide attacks carried out by Japan's military aviators against Allied shipping towards the end of the Pacific campaign of World War II, by crashing their planes packed with explosives into Allied warships.
- The grenades on the Soldier's bandolier resemble MK2 hand grenades but with an oversized safety lever and a more blocky body.
