Any chance we can get this page unprotected again, no way to add translations atm. Zeklyn (talk) 20:12, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Add parenthesis to tooltip

I'm trying to make all the sup text a tooltip instead of just the "sic" part, but I'm not able to. It's missing the end parenthesis after my edits.
Here's the diff of what I did: https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/index.php?title=User%3ATiagoquix%2FSandbox&type=revision&diff=3730615&oldid=3730614
Is there something I am missing?
Any help is appreciated.

You close off the {{lang}}, then add the closing parenthesis, then close off the tooltip. The closing parenthesis is inside the tooltip. Simply turn }}}} at the end into }} and turn the ending }}{{lang incomplete into }}}}{{lang incomplete. Also note that the nowiki tags for the parenthesis are not necessary, as they function fine without.

Doing the way you mentioned goes against my initial idea of also having the closing parathensis inside the tooltip itself. The current way should work, but for some reason the closing paranthesis is not rendered.
Tiagoquix (talk) 03:32, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
I figured it out. Both lang incompletes should be {{tooltip|here (with sic)|then normal {{lang}} here.

Example:

{{tooltip|{{lang incomplete|pt-br=[|force=pt-br}}Obrigado!{{lang incomplete|pt-br=]|force=pt-br}}|{{lang incomplete|en=The preceding text is in Brazilian Portuguese.|force=en}}}}

generates

[Obrigado!]

However, I think square brackets for all languages is better, so I have removed both lang incomplete entirely.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to change this at all? Square brackets are not used in English for this (or really any) purpose. The common usage in English is (sic), and often in superscript so it doesn't detract from the original text. Adding square brackets, and making the tooltip bigger to include the brackets, detracts from that. I think it should be reverted. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 07:17, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
I changed it after seeing that w:Template:Sic uses square brackets, so coming from Wikipedia I think it can be considered the standard, and, therefore, the "correct" way. However, I can revert it without any problems. I'll wait for a third opinion and proceed from there.

That's a fair point, happy to leave it then. I still would prefer the tooltip to remain within the brackets, personally. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 07:24, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I'm with the initial idea of Cooper Kid on this one. There's no need for the change, but I also don't really understand why the first message asked how to fix the closing parenthesis not being visible, but then afterwards you say you want the closing parenthesis to be part of the tooltip? Either way, I'm on board with extending the tooltip to the brackets, but not with the rest of the changes.

() or [] is a style choice according to merriam-webster and if the brackets are making it bigger then I'd have to say I'm against it. Jh34ghu43gu (talk) 10:15, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
I think the brackets look very not good. Can't put my finger on why but I just think it looks worse. If it's a choice we should stick with the parentheses in my opinion. Mediarch User Mediarch PFP.pngTalkMy Edits 11:05, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
