Template talk:Painted variants unused
Unused painted variants are misleading.
Hey, I've been discussing things with a friend of mine who is a workshop creator, and I've been told that items such as Apparatchik's Apparel, were never meant to be paintable at all. See these "paint regions" were added to these items and then restricted to only RED and BLU team textures, they were never meant to be able to be painted other colors. This was to simply save on filespace, rather than having individual texture files for RED and BLU team variants, it's just one texture and is coded as a "paint region", but was restricted again to only RED and BLU. Meaning, the "unused painted variants" are completely misleading, and shouldn't be treated as unused content.--ShadowMan44 (talk) 06:28, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think this is misleading. The note specifies they are set up to be painted, but can't be, which is entirely true. Even if the intention wasn't to have it be paintable, it still is set up to be paintable.

- I agree with swood. I don't really think it's misleading. The note simply says the item is set up for paint. It doesn't say anything about what the intent behind it was. Also I don't think unused paintability is necessarily always just a space saving thing because there are examples such as Cool Breeze and Tartan Shade. Unless we start contacting the creators and getting confirmation about what the intent was we can't really do much else to clarify it. Something like the Lollichop is impossible to judge. It couldve been to save space or it could've been to have colored lollipops and they decided against it. We couldn't say without getting ahold of someone at Valve.
