Camping refers to the using of tactics that largely involve waiting for enemies, often in an advantageous position, rather than actively seeking them out. While a legitimate strategy, players often find camping a frustrating tactic that ruins overall enjoyment of the game, and its usage is largely frowned upon.
Due to the type of gameplay in Team Fortress 2, camping is less of a problem than other online games, as large numbers of players completely avoiding combat will often result in a loss for the offending side.
Tactics that Constitute Camping
- Waiting at an enemy Teleporter exit or respawn area until someone comes through in hopes of catching them off guard. Trapping people in spawn using camping tactics is often known as spawn camping.
This is often done by Demomen placing sticky bombs around the spawn exit, Pyros spraying fire at the doorway or Engineers who manage to build Sentry Guns facing the door.
- Demomen sticky bombing low traffic areas and staying there for long periods.
Things that Do Not Constitute Camping
- Snipers staying in one position, unless it is of little strategic importance.
- Demomen staying behind their sticky bomb carpets in strategic locations.
- Heavies waiting in strategic positions as human Sentry Guns.
- Engineers guarding their Sentry Guns in strategic locations.
