The voice commands are a communication feature that consists in pre-defined calls, usually used to quickly communicate with the team or call for help. When used, they are spoken in the voice of the user's class, and may also include a hand gesture (not visible to players themselves). The voice commands are divided into three separate menus (default: Z, X, and C). All voice commands from Voice Menu 1 and 2 (except "Sentry Here", "Dispenser Here", "Teleporter Here", and "ÜberCharge Ready"), as well as "Help!" from Voice Menu 3, are printed in the text chat alongside regular typed messages. The voice commands are prefixed by "(Voice)" in the player's team colour.
Due to its importance and universal nature, the "MEDIC!" call by default has its own separate keybind (default: E). Teammates (and Spies that are disguised) calling for healing have a speech bubble with a red cross appear over their heads. When playing as a Medic, these bubbles are additionally visible through walls and have an on-screen indicator pointing to the player of origin when it is not in front of the Medic player.
There are calls that are context-sensitive:
- The "Help!" call: If the user is standing on an enemy control point or pushing a Payload cart, their class requests help with capturing the point or cart. If the player is standing on a team-owned control point, their class requests help in defending the point.
- The "Spy!" call: Aiming at a character and using the "Spy!" command results in the user's class calling the target a Spy (unless playing as Pyro). This works on players of both teams and regardless to whether that player is actually a Spy.
- The "MEDIC!" call: Except for Pyro, Demoman, and Medic, aiming at a Medic and using the "MEDIC!" command results in the user's class asking the Medic to follow them.
- The "Battle Cry" call: Aiming at an enemy and using the "Battle Cry" command with a certain weapon out results in the user's class speaking lines similar to the lines spoken when making a duel with another player, as well as some unique lines which can only be heard by this command.
Voice commands used by disguised Spies behave differently: to the Spy himself and to the enemy team, these commands sound as the disguised class; to teammates, the Spy sounds normal.
Voice commands can be called using the command voicemenu
in the console. For more information, see Scripting.
Specific players can be muted in the PC version via the main menu by clicking the "Mute players" button near the bottom of the screen.
As of the July 3, 2020 Patch, in order to use voice commands in Valve official servers, a player must have a Premium account on Team Fortress 2 and a non-limited user account on Steam.
