Item Rarity is the status added to the items to balance them against the new ones. There is only one group of rare items: Vintage weapons.

Standard items

Also called 'stock' items, these are the standard non-unlockable weapons that first shipped with the game, e.g. the Scattergun and the Rocket Launcher. These weapons are available to all players.

Unique items

Also known as unlockables. These are standard unlockable items. They can be purchased from the Mann. Co Store, sometimes dropped randomly through gameplay, some of them can be obtained through the achievements, and can also be crafted and traded.

Vintage items

Vintage items are most of items that were obtained before the release of the Mann-Conomy Update. All existing items were changed from standard unique items to Vintage items to increase their appeal in trading, however, they bear no difference from regular weapons other than their blue name and new "Vintage" prefix. Some items were excluded and not changed to Vintage, such as badges, promotional items such as Bill's Hat, and Holiday items such as the Ghastly Gibus. Other items such as the Vintage Tyrolean keep both their original name and the new prefix, resulting in the muddled title "Vintage Vintage Tyrolean". It remains to be seen if this is fixed by Valve.

Vintage items act the same as standard unique items, and can be crafted normally. As the number of Vintage items decreases over time by crafting and trading, their individual value will increase. Renamed vintage items keep their original name colour.

Unusual items

Unusual Items are items that have special effects placed around them. These have a chance to be found in a Mann Co. Supply Crate when it is unlocked with a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key.

There are a number of effects that can be found on 'Unusual Items'; ones confirmed from the items_game.txt are:
