The Dueling Mini-Game is an item that allows the player to challenge another player to a duel. This item is limited to 5 uses.
The item must be equipped in the Action Slot of the class the player is currently using. When activated (default H), the game will ask if the player wants to challenge someone on their friends list (who needs to be playing TF2 at the time) or someone on the server they're currently on. A notification will pop up when the challenge is activated. The opponent must then choose to either accept or deny the challenge. If the player challenges someone on a server, everyone currently in the server will be notified. A player may only be in one duel at a time, but there may be multiple duels going on in a server at once.
If they accept, the duel begins. This item will not be consumed if the other player refuses the duel. At the end of the round, whoever has more duel points wins. Kills and assists against your opponent are worth 1 point.
This item's use(s) are refuned if the server changes level or the score is tied 0-0 at the end of the round.
Dueling in an endless, user-made, "dm map" may result in failure to record the final duel result in addition to other problems with the dueling system.
If a team switch is engaged and the chosen player is participating in a duel, the player that is switched will lose by default; This includes being auto-balanced to the other team. This is likely a bug.
Its backpack icon appears as two crossed, team-coloured Ambassadors.
Gameplay
The goal is to obtain Duel Points by killing or assisting against the opposing dueler. The player's opponent will have an icon above his head to identify him, similar to a domination. The Scoreboard will also change to show the amount of Duel Points of each player, replacing the usual information available through it.
Whoever has more duel points by the end of the round wins (and obtains the Bronze Dueling Badge if they haven't already. The same goes for the loser). Alternatively, if one of the duelists leaves, his opponent wins. Using the 'retry' command to reconnect to the server is detected as leaving.
The Dueling Mini-Game is canceled if one of the users disconnect through lag, the server resets, or the map changes. If neither player kills or assists the other before the round ends, the Dueling Mini-Game item is not used.
However, if the duel is in a tie when the round ends, neither players' dueling statistics are affected and the Dueling Mini-Game item will not be refunded.
Every time you level your badge, you get a random item along with a single use "Dueling Mini-Game". These items are announced to the server as "%playername% has earned: %itemname%", rather then the usual "has found" template.
Winning Badges
By participating a duel, you earn a medal. This medal initially starts as the Bronze Dueling Badge and is Level 1. For every 10 duels you win, you increase the level of your Dueling Badge. You are also awarded a free single-use Dueling Mini-Game item and a random drop. At certain levels, your medal will increase in quality. If the badge is deleted, a new one will be awarded upon completing another duel. This new badge will have the same stats as the old one, but a new "date received".

Trivia
- It was stated in an interview with Gabe Newell that the Dueling Mini-Game spun-off from a full game mode idea. Gabe Newell also hinted at the possibility of adding other mini-games in the future.[citation needed]
- Although the item description states that you can "Use these stylish firearms to challenge them to a duel", you do not actually use any special weapon when dueling.
