What was noise?
The Heavy

Noise Makers are action items. Each is represented in the backpack as a small device with a large button and two small LED lights at the bottom. The design varies with each version.

When a Noise Maker is equipped in the action slot and used, a noise is played to all nearby players on the server. Most Noise Makers have multiple unique sounds that can randomly play when used, with the exception of "Stabby", which has only one possible sound.

Each Noise Maker, aside from "TF Birthday" and "Winter Holiday", can only be used 25 times before being removed from the player's backpack.

Scream Fortress Update

The unique particle effect spawned by using any of the seven Halloween noise makers.

Halloween Noise Makers could only be purchased from the Mann Co. Store during the Scream Fortress Update event. There were eight Noise Makers, one of which was unused. The seven usable Noise Makers could be purchased as a pack. Upon using any one of these noise makers, a particle effect consisting of orange ghosts and white music notes would be spawned temporarily around the user's head.

Trivia

  • The sound for "Stabby" is a reference to the famous "shower scene" in the 1960 film Psycho.
  • The Koto is a traditional Japanese musical instrument, and is also the national instrument of Japan.
  • The vuvuzela is a traditional African instrument that became associated with football during the 2010 World Cup, which was hosted by South Africa. The noise generated in the stadiums by the Vuvuzela became a controversial and memorable part of the event.
  • The sounds added for Noise Maker - Fireworks were later reused on the map Pier after fireworks are triggered from the Payload explosion.
