更新補丁是用來修復遊戲中出現的bug和故障的程式，也經常加上一些新武器、新地圖，或是一些為了遊戲平衡的設定

有些主要補丁，在英文叫做更新（updates），會增加新武器，新模式和新地圖。一般來說，這種主要更新會集中在一個或兩個特定兵種上，會對特定兵種釋出特別的更新內容。其他類的主要更新則會圍繞在某個特定主題或節日上。

對Windows和Mac OS X的玩家會釋出相同的更新內容和版本，不同的不會被釋出。這些更新程式會從Steam直接傳送到每個絕地要塞2玩家，玩家必須要安裝好更新才能再啟動遊戲。但是，因為Xbox開發商Template:W的種種限制，Xbox的更新非常稀少，目前只有4個（最後一個在2009釋出）。至於PC版從2007年起，已經更新超過140次了。
