Introduced in the Über Update, Strange quality weapons are found by opening Mann Co. Supply Crates of a certain series. Strange weapons track certain actions which are recorded as an item attribute. Some Strange weapons have more than one counter that tracks another associated action. Secondary counters do not count toward rank progress. Prefixes of Strange weapons will automatically change based on the primary counter's rank. Every time the weapon levels up - the message appears in the chat box notifying the players on the server.
The hexadecimal color code for Strange items is #CF6A32.
Ranks
All Strange weapons start with an initial prefix of Strange, however this is not a rank itself. Trading a Strange weapon will cause its counter to reset to zero and its prefix to reset to Strange, unless Gift Wrap is used.

Notes
- The following Strange items do not track kills, instead:
- Jarate and Mad Milk tracks and ranks up based on the number of coated enemies, or "Sodden Victims".
- The Razorback tracks and ranks up based on the number of Spies shocked by backstabbing it, or "Spies Shocked".
- The Eyelander attains "Heads Taken".
- The Medi Gun and Kritzkrieg tracks ÜberCharges and kill assists, and ranks up based on ÜberCharge count.
- The Wrench and the Jag track Sentry Gun kills and standard melee kills, and rank up based on Sentry Gun kills.
- Killing a teammate while friendly fire is enabled will increase your kill total with that weapon by one, as though it were a normal kill.
- The following actions don't increase the total kill count:
- Activating the Cloak of a Spy who is using the Dead Ringer.
- Killing bots, nor will Uber-Charging bots with a Strange Medi Gun, nor increase "Sodden Victims" with Jarate.
- Killing yourself with a Strange Boston Basher, Rocket Launcher, Direct Hit, Black Box, or Gloves of Running Urgently.
- Killing an enemy with a compression blast from the Strange Flamethrower, Backburner or Degreaser.
- Killing an enemy with the Sandman's baseball.
- Killing an enemy with a taunt.
- Kills are counted together for classes that share the same Strange weapon.
- Using a Name Tag or Description Tag will change the name and description of the Strange weapon, but the weapon will still retain its rank and kill counter. Its current kill rank is displayed under the name of the weapon in light grey text.
Bugs
- Counters do not update in-game when you inspect another player's Strange weapon on the Deathcam.
- If a strange weapon goes up a rank, it will appear to have the original rank prefix when switching weapons until the player respawns.
- It is possible to accumulate kills on the Strange Wrench or Strange Jag by killing yourself with the Wrangler.
- The Eyelander levels up only on kills, rather than total heads collected.
