Team Fortress 2:n mekaniikat määrittävät säännöt ja kyvyt pelaajille, palvelimille sekä and sisältöeditoreille. Näiden mekaniikoiden ymmärtäminen sallii virtaviivaisempaa ja monimutkaisempaa pelaamista.
Pelimoottori
Team Fortress 2 pyörii Orange Box -versiolla Source-pelimoottorista, ja se on suunniteltu toimimaan PC:llä, Xbox 360:lla, PS3:lla ja Macilla. TF2 on optimoitu ja tasapainotettu 24 tai vähemmän pelaajan pelejä varten (18 Xbox 360:lla ja 16 PS3:lla), mutta palvelimilla voi olla enimmillään 32 pelaajaa jos se on niin säädetty (ainoastaan PC:llä/Macilla). Kaikki pelaajien toiminnot ja asetukset käsitellään konsolikomentoina sekä muuttujina, jotka tunnetaan nimellä ConVars.

- Pyro: An offensive class with 100% move speed and 175 health points ideal for close quarters combat and group support. Can ignite enemies and never catches fire.
- Demoman/fi: A defensive class with 93.33% move speed and 175 health points specializing in area denial and damage output. Can sticky jump.
- Heavy: A defensive class with 76.67% move speed and 300 health points that excels in dealing and receiving sustained damage.
- Engineer: A defensive class with 100% move speed and 125 health points that specializes in area denial and support. Can create, maintain, and upgrade buildings.
- Medic: A support class with 106.67% move speed and 150 health points that focuses on improving the longevity and efficacy of team mates. Regenerates health passively and can deploy ÜberCharges.
