Mann. Co Supply Crates are tool items obtainable only through the item drop system. They can only be by unlocked using Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, which are only purchasable on the Mann Co. Store for the price of 2.49 USD.
When unlocked, the crate yields one of the items listed in its series and is then removed from the player inventory.

Exceedingly Rare Special Items
An 'Exceedingly Rare Special Item' found in a crate may be a random hat with the 'Unusual' quality. Unusual items have purple-colored names with a random 'super rare' particle effect. The 'Exceedingly Rare Special Item' can also be another crate.
There are a number of effects that can be found on 'Unusual Items', ones confirmed from the items_game.txt are:
