Paint Cans are items that allow you to change the color scheme of hats. Paint cans were implemented in the Mann-Conomy Update on September 30, 2010. They come in several colors, all but two can be bought in the Mann Co. store, or found in regular gameplay via random drops, with the final 2, Black and White, being only found by unboxing a Mann Co. Supply Crate series #1.
Valve has stated via forums that you will eventually be able to paint weapons, but current development priority rests on fixing the bugs that were revealed with the Mann-Conomy Update.

Trivia
- The "216-190-216" in the name of Color No. 216-190-216 is the RGB representation of its hexadecimal color code, #D8BED8. The otherwise nondescriptive name is possibly an attempt at hiding the fact that it is essentially a shade of pink, likely not something Mann Co. wants to advertise.
- Zephaniah's Greed is misspelled; it should read "Zepheniah's Greed".
- Muskelmannbraun is German for "Muscleman brown".
- "A Deep Commitment to Purple" refers to the band Deep Purple.
- Painted items do not work under DirectX 8; they will be the ordinary colored item instead. When running the game under DirectX 8, the item descriptions for the Paint Cans as well as the "carrying" descriptions for other players' painted items will warn you of this fact.
- Some hats, such as the Demoman's Fro or the Hound Dog, seem to revert to their original color upon the wearer's death. It's unknown whether or not there are plans to fix this in a future patch.
- Since the October 6, 2010 Patch hats can have their paint removed, restoring them to their original color. In doing so, however, the Paint Can will not be returned to the player.
