The Spy

The Dueling Mini-Game is a tool that allows the player to challenge another player to a duel. This item is limited to 5 uses.

The item must be equipped in the Action Slot of the class the player is currently using. When activated, the game will request if the player wants to challenge someone on their friends list (who needs to be playing TF2 at the time) or someone on the server they're currently on. A notification will pop up when the challenge is activated. The opponent must then choose to either accept or deny the challenge. If the player challenges someone on a server, everyone currently in the server will be notified. A player may only be in one duel at a time, but there may be multiple duels going on in a server at once.

If they accept, the duel begins. This item will not be consumed if the other player refuses the duel. At the end of the round, whoever has more duel points wins. Kills and assists against your opponent are worth 1 point.

The item's quantity is not reduced if the server changes level or the score is tied 0-0 at the end of the round.

Dueling in an endless, user-made, "dm map" may result in failure to record the final duel result in addition to other problems with the dueling system.

If a team switch is engaged and the chosen player is participating in a duel, the player that is switched will lose by default; This includes being auto-balanced to the other team. This is likely a bug.

Its backpack icon appears as two crossed, team-coloured Ambassadors.

Winning Badges

By participating a duel, you earn a medal. This medal initially starts as the Bronze Dueling Badge and is Level 1. For every 10 duels you win, you increase the level of your Dueling Badge. You are also awarded a free five-use Dueling Mini-Game item and a random drop (including all dropable items such as weapons, rarely hats and even another Dueling Mini-Game, but not Supply Crates). At certain levels, your medal will increase in quality. If the badge is deleted, a new one will be awarded upon completing another duel. This new badge will have the same stats as the old one, but a new "date received".

Demonstration

Trivia

  • The unique responses spoken by some classes when initializing duels are actually old voice clips that have remained unused (in some cases for years) until some were drawn upon for dueling.
  • It was stated in an interview with Gabe Newell that the Dueling Mini-Game spun-off from a full game mode idea. Gabe Newell also hinted at the possibility of adding other mini-games in the future.[citation needed]
  • Although the item description states that you can "Use these stylish firearms to challenge them to a duel", you do not actually use any special weapon when dueling.
  • While the backpack icon displays two Ambassadors, the in-game dueling icons display two Revolvers.
  • While in a trade screen you are unable to see the amount of usages left on a particular Dueling Mini-Game.
