So I'm not really sure what thing it is that broke it, but there's a small Tab-break that overlaps the search bar (the 'a' for me). There's no harm in removing it, it's just a background-image. The HTML element is the <code><h3 tabindex="0" id="p-cactions-label"></code>, and since it's a vectorMenu it's probably part of the first block in MediaWiki:Vector.css.
 +
 +
It's only a vertical tab break, so I know it won't break the left-hand sidebar, I'm not sure where else in the page this image is used.

Your user page's CSS

Hi, Wind! I've been working on getting my userpage into an acceptable condition, and I was wondering if you could show me how you have those divs hidden that show on the click of a link, as well as how the backgrounds work. If you don't have the time, I would really appreciate it if you sent me in the right direction, with, for example, a link. Thanks! r 1 [ C T ] 21:40, 10 October 2012 (PDT)

Unfortunately this is done in JavaScript, and we don't allow users to write their own JavaScript because it would be possible to write malicious JavaScript code that way. As such, only a few pages on the wiki have custom JavaScript available. However, you can use CSS and define your custom stylesheet, though you need to ask if you want that to be enabled on your userpage. But it's usually not granted to users who haven't done much besides editing their userpage, so I think you should focus on that first and then you can worry about having a pretty userpage.
For reference, the custom CSS for my userpage is at User:WindPower/Page.css and the custom JavaScript code is at User:WindPower/Page.css. The list of pages with custom CSS and custom javascript can be found here (Ctrl+F "pagesJS" or "pagesCSS" to find the right line); you can go to these pages and add "/Page.css" or "/Page.js" at the end of the URL to get the custom CSS or javascript. — Wind 21:53, 10 October 2012 (PDT)
Thank you very much for the info! I'll take your word and concentrate on other, more important things. r 1 [ C T ] 22:24, 10 October 2012 (PDT)

RE: The IRC

Unban me. Once again, I've fallen victim to Lagg's bad judgement. As a good friend on Steam just said to me: "regardless of the video, all you did was post a youtube link. I fail to see how that warrants a ban". I am also calling for the de-adminning of Lagg. Of course, that's a decision that'd be best left to the higher ups. Look at his contribs though. Look at his screwups. Read my userpage if need be. But all I'm saying right now is unban me from the IRC and do something about Lagg. I'm getting sick of the guy. 404: User Not Found (talk) 21:25, 21 January 2012 (PST)

Oh, and in defense, yes, I may have accidentally started a Canada/America discussion, but I tried to leave it, and was pulled back in, hence why I posted that video and left. The Cult of Personality (talk) 21:28, 21 January 2012 (PST)

group of translatores

Hi i've created a group were the italian translators can chat and solve any concern regarding the translation in italian of some terms. Is it possible to promote it here in the wiki? where exactly i can do this? the group is here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Italiantf2wikitranslators thank you, Ironmask 03:37, 23 January 2012 (PST)

The best place is on the translation progress page, which you have already done~ The second best place is replacing the "Steam group" link on the italian main page by this one, which I have done just now. The third best place would probably be to post an announcement on the main (english) Steam group itself, which I can do if you want me to — Wind 15:01, 23 January 2012 (PST)

Thank you for the help, you don't even know how happy i am about it. I've already made a small post on the english Steam Group. As of now, i think we've done everything possible to let the people know our group. Thanks again! Ironmask 02:06, 25 January 2012 (PST)

Russian TF2 fonts on this wiki

Hello. Some people from IRC channel advised me to ask you about problem. The problem is that current TF2 fonts on this wiki didnt support russian simbols. We wants to add this. Maybe you can help with this? ps: sorry for bad English if it was so. --Askarmuk 08:28, 5 February 2012 (PST)

Sorry

Sorry, for all the trouble which has been caused by RectrumZone, but I cannot do much outta it then just warn him on my own language. I don't want to take any actions then just removing unapprovable edits which has been added on both the /en and /no. It seems he hasn't actually understood the rules I have already explained to him almost TWICE on our native language. So I will ask you to keep a close look on the /en while Lockon and me takes care of /no (which Lockon has been doing so kindly for me in the last couple of days). Also, if this user does not show any improvement. I would just have to go with a huge warning about doing these so called "grammar corrections". Recently, he has been editing non existing article link-ups, which kind of bugs me. As you have seen yourself, he adds useless names on things too. I just wanna mark it clearly that i have doubts about him. Stunned.png TheNobleScout 06:23, 23 February 2012 (PST)

Got a problem about Template:Patch layout

Hello, Wind. I have seen a problem inside the : the part of the "day, month, year". I know that this part is modified by WindBOT, however when it was operating, the patch title of zh-hant became "2012年february月23日更新", not "2012年2月23日更新" (The Patch page). The latter form of date is the correct one, so it seemed that WindBOT's setting is wrong or something? I don't know how to tell WindBOT not to do this, so I left a message about it for you. ~www~ 07:43, 25 February 2012 (PST

Edit patch-fmt and patch-fmt-beta to match; the {} is the month name. You can wrap it in lang date to have it translated; look at the other languages for inspiration — Wind 10:55, 25 February 2012 (PST)
OK, I will try to find out where the problem is. ~www~ 00:23, 26 February 2012 (PST)

Missing image

Hey Wind - I wonder if you could take a quick look at this image - there's something pretty messed up about it, it's throwing all sorts of error messages at me. I'm not even sure if it's only showing up like this for me, or if it's server-side. I'm hoping it's just a cache problem, but it's unlike anything I've seen before so I thought it would be best to ask. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 14:09, 28 February 2012 (PST)

Split-screen

Hey, Wind, can you explaing me how to use the split-screen? You have to put it in resource folder? I didn't try it yet. If you could explain me, I would do the Equalizer weapon demonstration. Slicezorr Killicon high noon.png 11:13, 26 March 2012 (PDT)

Help

I may be annoying, Wind, but, it says on weapon demonstration page that you can edit game files to give yourself an item (for offline testing). Can you tell me how to do that? I'll appreciate if you would help me, cuz I wanna help making demos. Slicezorr Killicon high noon.png 11:20, 29 March 2012 (PDT)

That question has also already been answered on the talk page, but this being said, I should probably remove the note on the project page about it because it has now become too hard to do to really recommend that method. Hey, Wind. May I make a user template (like "This user is a spy") for bronies? I'm asking, just because I'm bored and I still wanna contribute the wiki. Sorry for filling your talk page, but, I'm wondering how to do something. I want to put a YouTube video with no video, just sound on a page. I also want it to autoplay and loop. I saw an example on this page. EncyclopediaDramatica seems to have different coding, even though it and OfficialTF2 wiki are powered by MediaWiki. Can you help me, please? Slicezorr Killicon high noon.png 03:47, 5 April 2012 (PDT)

Just add audio=true to turn it into an audio player. Looping can be done on the youtube side with annotations, there is no way for the template to do this. As for autoplay, we generally don't have strict rules for userpages but autoplaying audio definitely crosses that line of annoyingness, so I'm sorry but no autoplay. — Wind 16:11, 5 April 2012 (PDT)

Current Events template

Hi! There are a couple of small errors on the currents events of Template:Current_Events: "Alladin's Private Reserve" should be "Aladdin's Private Reserve" (spelled right on the blog), and there's a period after "uniquely". Wind TF2 class mod

Hey ,

First of all amazing mod! I got a couple of questions though , how can I change the key bindings of various classes to different keys ? For example , instead of having engineer take out the wrench on middle mouse click , how do I move it to mouse click 3 or 4?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.

Syrius 02:00, 20 May 2012 (PDT)

You can globally swap keys (for all classes) by editing binds.cfg. If you want to edit class-specific things, you'll need to edit wind_thatclass.cfg. In the engineer's case, edit wind_engineer.cfg. You can't bind things to mouse4 as it is because the config was made to support mice with 3 buttons. If you want to add a mouse4 bind, edit binds.cfg and add a line like bind "mouse4" "+a_mouse4" after the bind "mouse3" "+a_m3" one. Then, in the engineer cfg, replace all instances of +a_mouse3 by +a_mouse4, and all instances of -a_mouse3 by -a_mouse4, for example. This is sort of a dirty hack though, I suggest you learn how to write .cfg files yourself if you want to customize it a lot (or write your own) — Wind 12:42, 20 May 2012 (PDT)

I'm having trouble using the item set crafting blueprint on different language pages. See User:R4wrz0rz0r/swagbox/fr for an example. As far as I can tell, all syntax is correct for all the entries, and I can't find the source of the loop. Could you help with this? rZ 13:15, 6 June 2012 (PDT)

It looks like Template:Blueprint and Template:dictionary/blueprints call each other about 5 or 6 times in total, playing enough tennis to make the wiki false-positive a loop. I can fix this after I get through the QuAD project, in case it's not done by then. User Rebmcr Sig.png 16:03, 6 June 2012 (PDT)
Please do. The problem is actually in where some stuff like item sets call dictionary wrappers (item name etc). Dis is bad. Entries in the dictionary should not call other entries in the dictionary. — Wind 18:15, 6 June 2012 (PDT)

Language search

I haz idea for useful script for wicky (it's actually useful this time). When somebody attempts to search for something, the script will intercept it and try to see if a /lang version exists. For example, if I was on Main Page/de and I searched for Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol, it would direct me to Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol/de. If a /lang version doesn't exist, it will give you the normal search. This would be very useful especially for items or other terms which don't have translations yet, seeing as the language options on the sidebar are not very prominent. rZ 14:27, 18 July 2012 (PDT)

One slightly improved search, at only twice the price! Buy now! – fashnek (talk·c) 14:29, 18 July 2012 (PDT)
That pretty much mean doubling the time to do an english search, and I'm pretty sure that the number of english searches is an order of magnitude larger than the number of non-english searches combined.
So while it's a good idea and would be beneficial, it's only worth implementing if it doesn't slow down the majority of users in the process, which it would if it were to be implemented client-side since that's our only option right now. — Wind 19:39, 18 July 2012 (PDT)

Demo Files

Hi. I'm the numbskull/noob who's got the 2-mile-long Beggar's Bazooka talk page entry. I just wanted to know what a .dem file is. I know HOW to make one (courtesy of the demo recording help page) but I wanted to know WHAT should be in one. Should it be a redo of the video, just showing all the different console commands that I used, or it is something else? (Kind of looking for a "here's what you should do" thing)

Also, how should I provide the link to the uploaded movie file? I put it on ADrive.com, and I don't want to leave that URL on the talk page. Please forgive my noob-ness. Gilgamesh 12:02, 23 July 2012 (PDT)

Well, it's too late to make a .dem file now... What you're supposed to do is record .dems while you record with Fraps or whatever, and the two videos should be nearly identical. To leave a link to the video, you put it on the talk page. I don't see why you don't want to (no one's going to hack you with it), but if you really can't, then you can probably email Wind or something. Sorry if I cluttered your page, Wind. Mr. Vinderack, not as sober as you...thin..yah... 12:49, 23 July 2012 (PDT)

Well, I feel dumb. At least Wind can archive this now. Gilgamesh 05:13, 24 July 2012 (PDT)

It's alright if you forgot to record those for your first demo, but please have them for other demos. All detailed on the project page — Wind 14:49, 24 July 2012 (PDT)

3D Models

Hi WindPower, my name is Godisme. I was wondering if you could give me the components that go into setting up the 3D models you have in your infoboxes. We at Bleach Wikia are looking to implement something similar for our game material. I saw the code in your Common js and have taken a look at your infobox code but JS is not my specialty and so I don't know if that is all that it takes to work. I'll be looking forward to your answer, thanks--Godisme 19:14, 29 July 2012 (PDT)

3D images on mobile OS's

I was wondering if it was feasible to implement dragging for the 3D models, which right now don't work on iOS or Android devices. I found this jQuery library that does the trick, but it requires jQuery (which the wiki has) and jQuery UI (which it doesn't). Do you think dis vil vork doktor? User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 16:33, 6 August 2012 (PDT)

No because this would only make things-that-use-jQuery's-dragging-functions work, and the 3D thing doesn't use them — Wind 20:05, 12 August 2012 (PDT)

Help with my trivia

Hello WindPower! Few hours ago i posted a information on the trivia section of the article Doomsday. Few minutes ago, the user Dendodge posted on my talk some tips of how creating and editing texts. I went back to my text to know what i did wrong and there was a note of him saying this: " I'm not really sure if that's valid trivia, since it's purely observational, but it could at least be valid English". Now i don't know what i did wrong. Cpuld you help me? Here's what i added to the text: "Two of three markings it's readable, the first one says Cactus Valley, located on lower right and the second one says Death Pit, on upper left. The third mark, located on upper right, it's unreadable since the bad quality of texture." Thank you for reading this and helping me to fix it. --Louis and his pills 15:19, 12 August 2012 (PDT)

That was just a boilerplate welcome message. It doesn't mean you've done anything wrong, it's just a way of saying "Hi, welcome to the wiki, and here's some stuff you might find handy." I noticed some grammar mistakes in your trivia, so I fixed them, and I otherwise left the trivia just as it was. The grammar was what I meant by "valid English" - I'm sorry if it came across as rude. The trivia guidelines say that observational trivia isn't allowed, and I wasn't sure if what you added counted as observational, so I mentioned that in the edit summary in the hope that another user would take a look and give a second opinion. That doesn't mean it was a bad edit, and I'm sorry if I made it seem that way. dendodge 15:25, 12 August 2012 (PDT)

Wiki Layout/Templates

I play on a Minecraft server called The Voxel Box, and we also have a wiki powered by MediaWiki. I was wondering if you could explain how you edit the tabs at the top, the sidebar, and other various elements of the wiki. We feel ours looks rather bland, which is out of the ordinary for a creative server. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
Johnsmom 19:04, 6 September 2012 (PDT)

It's all done in regular CSS. Usually one would create a new MediaWiki theme and set it as the default. I don't know a good tutorial to follow on creating a new theme, but I'd suggest starting from an existing base that looks somewhat like what you're aiming for in terms of structure, and then modding its CSS. Unfortunately we don't have the priviledge of being able to add or remove themes on this Wiki because we don't have access to the server's files, but we can inject CSS into the current default theme (Vector) by editing MediaWiki:Vector.css (Ctrl+F for "Leyen" on that page). — Wind 20:54, 6 September 2012 (PDT)
Hi Windpower, I'm one of the VoxelWiki's staff and I just wanted to say thank you for the reply. Also, if you don't mind me asking, which skin did you guys start out with? I'm in love with y'all's layout and would love for our wiki to be creative and special like yours. --Croozee 21:59, 6 September 2012 (PDT)
Like I said, we can't add new themes or change the default theme on our own wiki (that's a shame), so we had to mod the default theme, Vector. It's the default theme of MediaWiki since version 1.17 or so, so you should have it already installed. If you have access to the files on your servers, you should make a new Vector-based theme, and mod that instead of modding Vector directly. As for inspiration, it's all based off the work of the Team Fortress website designers; we just stole their color palette, applied a slight hue shift, and increased the luminance to match the "light", "white-ish" theme that people now expect to find on wikis — Wind 22:04, 6 September 2012 (PDT)
Awesome, I would like to thank you very much. I really appreciate this. If you check back on our wiki in about a week or two, it should be looking great like yours! (link) --Croozee 15:26, 8 September 2012 (PDT)

Sony Vegas Pro 11.0 Rendering Help, please!

Hello Mister Windpower! I'd like to ask you a favour! Some time ago, you helped me create a video project for the Wiki Demonstration Project (Disciplinary Action, it's now been re-made by someone else...) Back in the day, you helped me install a plugin in my sony vegas rendering options that would make the video look 100% clean and perfect.

Could you please help me installing that plugin in my Sony Vegas Pro 11.0, please? I'd like to create some source videos which require the best of rendering settings!

Feel free to contact me on my steam profile if it is better for you: http://steamcommunity.com/id/76561198031328337/

Thank You very much!  –  BottleScreen.png TheHatlessMan | Brasilstation Sandvich.png 12:24, 4 November 2012 (PST)

That plugin was x264vfw, it's not a plugin for Vegas, it's a plugin for Windows, and Vegas uses Windows's codec list so you can use it in Vegas. Download and install the 32-bit or 64-bit version depending on whether you have Vegas 32-bit or 64-bit, restart Vegas, and you're done — Wind 12:27, 4 November 2012 (PST)
Well, yes! I've done that, but then, how do I render with the codec's settings?  –  BottleScreen.png TheHatlessMan | Brasilstation Sandvich.png 16:40, 4 November 2012 (PST)
It should show up in the Render As settings dialog when you select the AVI format — Wind
Unfortunately, it doesn't :/ Sony Vegas Pro 11.0 rendering is quite a lot different from the previous versions....I really wanted the Detail that codec provides D:
Can't you find a way to help me out?  –  BottleScreen.png TheHatlessMan | Brasilstation Sandvich.png 16:58, 4 November 2012 (PST)
I don't have Vegas 11, so no not really. Mayeb ti has its own H.264 encoder which you could use, otherwise you can always render the video stream in a lossless format, and then use x264 (the command-line encoder) or virtualdub (which should let you use x264vfw) to convert it to a proper H.264 video stream — Wind 17:02, 4 November 2012 (PST)
I found a place where you can use your own Codec under "Custom Template", but, the X264vfw codec is not listed in there....I'll see what I can do, if all else falls, I guess I have to go back to
Vegas 9.0 –  BottleScreen.png TheHatlessMan | Brasilstation Sandvich.png 17:04, 4 November 2012 (PST)
You need to download a 64 bit version of x264, then you need to specifically point Windows to the driver. (I strongly advice you to check your friend google :) , there are some threads on it) Vegas has always been difficult for when it comes to encoding stuff from my personal experience. :S --Gundi 10:18, 28 November 2012 (PST)
That hasn't been my experience, I just installed x264vfw (same version as the one Vegas is, so if you have Vegas 32-bit then you should download the 32-bit one, etc) and after restarting Vegas it shows up as a VFW codec in the rendering options — Wind 19:11, 28 November 2012 (PST)

Item editor help!

Hello Wind, may I ask you how could I use the Item editor to edit a weapon's stat and changing a weapon like "The Jag" to "The Golden Wrench" ? Because I want to join the Weapon Demonstration team, as I'm a new wiki worker. I had seen you demonstrating the weapon called "The Saxxy", that's why I'm asking you for it. - Piegineer 00:58, 22 November 2012 (PST)

I don't really know what the "Item editor" is, I just used a text editor to swap two blocks in items_game.txt to do that. Then you also have to do some material hackery in order to get the gold effect and reflection to look right, but I forget how to do that...
The Golden Wrench isn't up for redo anyway, so why do you need to do that? — Wind 06:35, 22 November 2012 (PST)
I just gave an example like from "The Jag" to "The Golden Wrench" , I want to get some advise from you so that maybe in the future I can edit the game files and redo the demonstration. I'm new to these things. - Piegineer 07:51, 22 November 2012 (PST)
Well it's still the same process: Swap two blocks in items_game.txt and it'll replace all instances of one weapon with the other, and then make items_game.txt work. (Also next time please use show preview so that I don't get 5 emails for one message) — Wind 09:07, 22 November 2012 (PST)
Alright, thanks Wind. - Piegineer 10:33, 22 November 2012 (PST)

SCP transfer stopped

When I checked winscp this morning, the file transfer had stopped, but it says that the file on your server is only ~2.4 GiB, notably smaller than the 16.8 GiB on my end. Any idea what happened there? Sorry - I don't really know much about scping. — Armisael (T · C) 05:19, 4 December 2012 (PST)

The Problem of Item infobox?

Hello, after my observation, I found that the localization pages with Item infobox has a weird thing happening recently. There's a redundant empty space on the upper part of almost every pages, which I cannot describe it clearly and don;t know how to solve it (Ex. AWPer Hand/zh-hant and any other lang pages). I have checked all the template which was edited in recent days, and I found out that the Infobox was edited not long ago. I wonder there's something wrong inside those codes, causing the pages have a space on the upper part that we don't needed. Could you check the template and see if there's anything wrong? About the "Marketable" in

Hello, recently I have noticed that there's a "Marketable" info in infobox, which can identify the items can be sold or not. However, I think there's many problems with that.
The default setting of the info is "No" , but many genuine items can be sold onto the Market, and the label would still be "No" if no one put another setting inside the individual page. When the promo is over, the items become unique quality and thus cannot be sold. The editors need to do another edit to removed it. Plus, there's many tool items which is labeled "cannot be sold" at this moment. I personally think it is a huge work for every language to label or remove "market = yes" setting manually.
Due to the wrong info sometimes cause, I think either we removed the Market part in the infobox, or the codes inside the infobox should be modified. If we decided to removed it, then the Steam Community Market page can do the record job. I think the information there is already sufficient by displaying the rules of Market and record the items which can be sold with a template. In sum, I don't think the Marketable label is necessary in infobox. Please let me know what's your opinion on this or what shall we do with the template. Thanks.
~www~ 07:42, 14 March 2013 (PDT)

I agree, I don't think that attribute is necessary. Mostly because I believe Valve intend to allow all items to be sold in the Steam Market in the near future, making this information nearly redundant. The Steam Community Market page should suffice for now until Valves plans are clearer. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 18:37, 14 March 2013 (PDT)

We do not have access to the server so there isn't much we can do about it. Seeing as steamcommunity.com doesn't fully work on https, nor does it even redirect you to it or set an HSTS header, I doubt Valve cares much about it. You talk-page stalker, you. I honestly don't see why we need it, aside from for the user login page. I doubt there's too much concern of the information being re-routed on its way to the wiki. Darkid (talk|contribs) 05:58, 10 June 2013 (PDT)
But how will I know that the paint preview images have not been MITM'd and replaced with slightly off colours?! User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 06:06, 10 June 2013 (PDT)
Now the situation is mostly the same. We still need to ask Valve to buy a certificate for the wiki.teamfortress.com domain, and enabling HTTPS would require network configuration changes that we are not capable of making (putting the cert on the load balancer and opening port 443 on it).
Also, protecting "just the login page" doesn't help much. All pages need to be served over HTTPS for logged-in users as well, otherwise you can sniff out the cookies and take over people's sessions (and change their passwords etc), no login credentials required. — Wind 13:05, 10 June 2013 (PDT)

Could you possibly disable WindBOT's patch name filter on /fi pages, as it tends to break sentence structure if the replaced patch name isn't in an update history section? Example (from Vintage/fi):

"15. maaliskuuta 2011 -päivityksessä joistakin kalliista luomispiirustuksista tehtiin halvempia." (-ssä being "in", thus making the previous example sound silly)

Thanks! Zabidenu 02:04, 9 May 2013 (PDT)

Quick Question

Is it actually possible to set TF2 in arabic? Because I went to check for myself and arabic wasn't listed in Library>TF2>Properties>Language. Because if it's not I'll keep the item names in english. Automated translations

Hi, I'm working on a script that automatically translates common things in hat/misc/weapon articles. Now I'm asking if this is okay, because the rules are saying automated translations are "strictly prohibited". The idea is not to translate every word, but often used sentences, like "The <item name> was added to the game", "The <item name> was contributed to the Steam Workshop...", etc. etc. It also translates categories and headlines. I'm working on the translation of interwiki and wikipedia links. Because not everything can be translated, like the item look description, the human editor is forced to eliminate mistakes while translating before the article is released. My idea is a bot (posting the translation on the article's talk page) or something different (like the Wikifier or sth. else). I hope I could illuminate you the idea. :)

PS: Sorry for possible spelling errors ;) ~{ TidB | t | c }~ 12:11, 24 August 2013 (PDT)

We already have autotranslations of common words like item names and class names and stuff using the dictionary system. It has already been abused a bit for autotranslated sentenced leading to templates such as Assisting in Pyroland (autotranslated sentence that can be seen on pyroland-items such as Pocket Medic), but these tends to increase complexity too much for it to be worth it. By "complexity", I mean both computational complexity (it makes mediawiki work harder to render an article, and we've hit its limits many times over the wiki's lifetime because of too many templates) and human complexity (new editors need to learn more in order to know how to edit the wiki properly). As such, I don't think it's a good idea to expand this sort of template further, despite the fact that it makes some tasks easier for veteran translators. Sorry >: — Wind 12:20, 24 August 2013 (PDT)
Hm, you're speaking of templates, but that's not how the thing would work. The script would just give the "translated" wikitext to the users, there are no templates used. The script would just paste the "translation" to a special site or run as a local script, the translators would just have to copy the text and translate the remaining text and fix mistakes. Mediawiki's rendering process remains untouched, and I think, even for new editors, it's not hard to run a program and/or C&P a text. And I know there are things like the dictionary, but 1. as you said, new editors need to get used to templates and 2. as you said, MediaWiki's resources are wasted. ~{ TidB | t | c }~ 13:34, 24 August 2013 (PDT)
That's no better than a template using the subst: feature. And, it doesn't solve the problem of human complexity--which is already not great. If you're a new editor trying to fix a grammar mistake, it's so much easier to do that with plain text rather than with a preset script. Also, certain sentences may have stylistic differences--which we shouldn't enforce on editors. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 12:57, 24 August 2013 (PDT)
I'm sorry, but I just don't understand your problems :(
  • "That's no better than a template using the subst: feature" Why?
  • "If you're a new editor trying to fix a grammar mistake, it's so much easier to do that with plain text rather than with a preset script." I don't understand this either. The script doesn't affect later changes in any way. It just replaces some sentences and words. There are no resource-intensive templates added (except the item name one, but that's standard stuff).
  • "Also, certain sentences may have stylistic differences" What do you mean? That some english sentences could not be identified?
I don't want to annoy you, but I think you haven't understand my concept :( (maybe I am just very dumb, though)
Here are a few examples of auto-translated wikitexts (English->German) ~{ TidB | t | c }~ 13:34, 24 August 2013 (PDT)
1. Pasting plaintext can be done using a subst: template, see Template:Welcome, for example. It does not as such need an external script. It's always better to use the built-in over the external.
2. If there's a grammatical mistake in the translation, and you are a new editor, you might fix the plaintext without knowing about the script. This would lead to future annoyance at seeing the identical error elsewhere--if each edit is made personally, this shouldn't happen.
3. Sentences such as "Blah-de-blah was originally contributed to the steam workshop named De-Blah-Blah[1]" could be re-written (as a stylistic difference) as "This item was originally contributed to the steam workshop as De-Blah-Blah[1]". Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 13:45, 24 August 2013 (PDT)

I see what you mean a bit more, though I don't understand all of it. Specifically:

  • How would such a script know which sentences to autotranslate in a page?
  • How does the script know what each sentence should be replaced by?
  • How can editors change the data (add sentences, edit the translations, add new languages to existing translations, etc.)?
  • How is the script distributed to users? (Is it part of MediaWiki:Common.js for everyone, is it voluntarily added to select users' vector.js, is it an external script (greasemonkey etc) that one must install, or is it a script that runs on an external webpage, or something else?)
  • When does the script run? (Or how does the editor make it run?)

Wind 16:54, 24 August 2013 (PDT)

  • There are specified patterns which the script searches for. For example, the first sentences is found via the regular expression ".*?" + <the item's name> + ".*? is | are .*? a .*? for .*?\.". The first sentence is always translated, the second sentence (...was contributed to the Steam Workshop.../...given to players who pre-ordered...) is optional. Other things are just text replacement (categories, headlines).
  • There are standard translations. The script extracts the necessary information (item name, using classes, promo/community/nothing, etc.) from the text and paste it into the standard translation. For example, the promo sentence (german) created is like that: This is the standard translation -> "(ARTIKEL){{{{item name|{0}}}}} bekamen Spieler in der Qualität Echt, die {1} vor dem {2} kauften. " These are the needed information -> {0} = Item name, {1} = The promo game, {2} = date. The inserted parts don't need to be conjugated, so the sentence is always grammatical correct.
  • Well, if you mean the script itself, they can't. You would need to change the code to do that and I don't think anybody wants to read my code ;). Adding sentences will be limited, I plan to add sentences from other languages, and I can't do that alone. To add new translations, the editor would have to know about the script & python or contact me. Editing existing sentences will be possible, there are just files with the standard translation in them. That would be possible then. That's about changing the script. When the script has ran over the text, it just returns the translated wiki text to the user, who can edit it then. The script won't touch the wiki text again. Unless the editor wants it.
  • At the moment, it's just a little script running on my PC. I have some ideas how the tool can be shared:
    • A local script, like now
    • A bot, pasting the translation to a site, likely the talk page of the article
    • A little button on the edit page, like the wikifier (I have no clue how to handle the common.js or the vector.js, so at the moment, this is not a good option)
  • As you can think, it runs only when I (or another editor who has this script)... ...run it. If the script would be a button on the edit page, it runs when you click on it; if it would be a bot, he would scan the recent edits for new articles he could translate, waits a day or something (so the article has enough information) and then posts it on a page.
I hope I could make myself clear now :) ~{ TidB | t | c }~ 12:46, 25 August 2013 (PDT)
Yes, that makes more sense and that all sounds fine. I don't think it would be a good idea to deploy that to everyone right now without seeing the script itself first and letting it be used by some people for a while, but to answer your original question ("is this allowed?"): Yes it is, and you can share it with others by putting it on your userpage and telling others about it or something. What's not allowed is automatic translation through Google Translate or other such general-purpose translation service, so that people who can't speak a language can't create fake translations in that language, and so that actual translators don't use it as a base because it may bias their translations to be worded the way Google Translate told them to word it. Your proposal follows existing translated sentences from other articles, so it is fine and it may actually end up improving wording consistency across articles. Is good — Wind 13:21, 25 August 2013 (PDT)

Asking about the Wiki Cap... (Nothing bad, I promise)

So if the Wiki Staff have the ability to basically give a user a Wiki Cap for all of their hard work for the Wiki, do they also have the ability to take it away? Because say somebody was caught up in a technicality (say they violated the Terms of Service and nobody noticed), would they be reprimanded in that event? It just came to my mind today, and it's got me wondering. Thanks for the help. --Samuel Enthers 14:48, 24 September 2013 (PDT)

The staff does not have that ability. Such problems have arisen in the past, so we just asked Valve to take the item away and they did. If you have a particular incident you'd like to share (and it sounds like you do), please send an emailWind 00:46, 25 September 2013 (PDT)

Template:Dictionary/defindex

A few strings within this are causing your bot trouble, namely "esh ultiduo #[1-7] gold medal" and "etf2l ultiduo #[1-4] gold medal". The problem is that each of these is getting placed in the "esh ultiduo" or "etf2l ultiduo" pages, since the #s are perceived as section links. This means that every pass that windbot makes of the dictionary causes 11 edits, every 1-4 hours. This has been going on since July 14, 2013, and may be one of the reasons that we have a job queue over 5 million. Even just hotwiring a fix for now would do the trick, since the strings are not changing. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 13:38, 9 October 2013 (PDT)

Let's hope this works — Wind 20:06, 9 October 2013 (PDT)
Working about 70%--it isn't spam updating the dictionary subpages, which is good, but it is self-conflicting between what it sees in the API and what the filter tells it to do. It copies from the API and then "friendly neighborhood dictionary updater" overwrites it. It doesn't push strings between these two--hopefully. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 20:45, 9 October 2013 (PDT)
I should have thought of that >: — Wind 21:32, 9 October 2013 (PDT)

About your script(s)

So I saw that you were using preferences, which seem to just be aliases which, when called, rebind other aliases etc etc. How do you ensure that these aliases are defined before they are called? The preferences are called in the autoexec, but I don't see the scripts which set up those aliases being called first. Is it called every time you change classes? Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 15:34, 25 October 2013 (PDT)

All class configurations call clear.cfg (as does autoexec.cfg). Therefore clear.cfg is called all the time, on all level loads and on every class change.
Then clear.cfg executes defaultpreferences.cfg (which sets up defaults for all preference aliases, to prevent errors if someone removes an option from their preferences file or if there's an update that adds a preference but the user keeps their existing preferences file because they don't want to rewrite it and they're OK with the default value for the new preference), and then executes preferences.cfg which overrides the value for these aliases. Then the aliases that these correspond to get defined. Not all of them do, since some of these are stored away in class-specific configs and whatnot. That's perfectly fine for the source engine, you'll just get some error about an undefined alias if you try to run it manually in the console, but since no key is bound to anything that would execute this alias in gameplay then nothing bad happens. The alias is defined in memory but it is never used.
The source engine also does not care about aliases having to be defined before they are used in a command. It just stores the alias command as a string and only evaluates it when necessary (i.e. when it is run), not at alias definition time. — Wind 18:22, 25 October 2013 (PDT)
Yeah, but wouldn't that mean that certain class-specific preferences wouldn't load? E.g. the configuration alias (alias pref_spy_autodisguise_true "blah blah blah") is defined in spy.cfg, but is being "set" before it's defined? Or are all these preference aliases predefined in the autoexec? Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 18:30, 25 October 2013 (PDT)
What do you mean by "set" and "defined" (what's the difference)? The pref_spy_autodisguise_true alias is defined once in wind_spy.cfg, and referenced once in preferences.cfg. Yes it is referenced before being defined, but like I said the execution model of the source engine (store aliases as strings, lazy-evaluate them) allows this. — Wind 19:25, 25 October 2013 (PDT)
I think I realize what the difference is--I thought that you had your preferences aliases being executed in the script, whereas instead you are binding them to another alias, which you can call at any time.
By "set" I meant when the preference alias is called (in the preferences file), and by defined I meant when the alias does something (i.e. changes the script settings/does stuff). Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 19:31, 25 October 2013 (PDT)

Is not updating Template:Dictionary/items. Could you wake it up? Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 17:01, 31 October 2013 (PDT)

Partial edits are causing the bot to re-write previous work, uselessly. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 22:18, 31 October 2013 (PDT)
Partial edits cause the bot to remember where it was when catching up on previous work. If you erase its syncdata then it has no way of knowing what's on every dictionary subpage other than requesting every single one of them, which is the same amount of requests as simply overwriting all of them with the content they should contain, so that's what it does because it is more efficient to do that in order to achieve the goal, i.e. getting every subpage containing the proper content.
The bot is set to kill itself if it runs for too long, and the items dictionary is so large that the bot got killed before overwriting every subpage and writing its syncdata, therefore it always restarted overwriting everything from the beginning when it restarted. Partial updates allow it to continue where it left off last time in such cases. The reason for being set to kill itself is because it used to run on a shared host which didn't allow long-running script, and as such it was designed to always run in a finite amount of time and restarting every so often.
Anyway, the problem in this case was the weird characters to try and put colons in dictionary entry names. Next time use High Five! as an example of how to implement an item with a colon in its name; dictionary entries should never have colons in their names. — Wind 00:35, 1 November 2013 (PDT)
I was trying to see if it was possible, and I was referring to pages like Template:Dictionary/achievements/scout which it cleared, did a partial re-write, and then updated. disDarkid (Talk|Contribs) 08:52, 1 November 2013 (PDT)
That is because the dictionary update filter is set to ignore syncdata completely with a 2% chance on each run. The reason it does that is to eventually fix any inconsistencies due to new editors editing subpages directly and whatnot. Now that it saves partial updates, that process is guaranteed to cover all subpages rather than just the ones it manages to reach during its one run where it decides to ignore syncdata.

Partial updates

I'm not entirely sure why you implemented this, but since the edits are to templates, it seems to be increasing the job queue rather quickly. It's jumped around 250k since this filter was implemented, whereas it was falling (slowly) prior. Can you either remove this feature, explain to me its cruciality, or increase the batch size? Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 11:58, 10 December 2013 (PST)

I already explained it in the section above. I don't really see why the job queue size would increase, since the syncdata template isn't transcluded or referenced by anything. But I agree that the batch size is too small and the number of edits it causes is ridiculous, so I increased it to 750 — Wind 20:28, 10 December 2013 (PST)

Monte / talk 07:10, 18 June 2014 (PDT)

Its non-open-source-ness is indeed very much on purpose. It is one of my first projects and makes every single wrong design decision it could take. Have you ever tried handling multiple sockets in parallel in PHP, which doesn't have threads (not to mention, it's PHP)? PHP 4 too, without using classes? It's a nightmare to work with, and a miracle that it still runs actually quite reliably to this day. Regardless, you'd gain time (perhaps not initially, but certainly a few a few months' worth of maintenance work) by starting from scratch rather than attempting to adapt Spacenet's source code to fit your use case. — Wind 20:49, 18 June 2014 (PDT)
Alriiight, got my own one working, running fine, but.. the links are long :< For the Spacenet's output, did you use some built in function(or owncoded) of shortening the links or is there some existing script for such matter that you could recommend me? Coding a Bot

Hey Wind, I've recently been trying to design a bot to go into another wiki I'm on to correct spelling errors. So I thought, with your wizard powers in coding, you could give me some advice or a tutorial on how to code and design a bot? This would mean a lot to me if you could help :) If it takes too long or for some other reason, you can reach me here: Dubstowel@gmail.com Thanks! Dubstowel (talk) 20:39, 13 July 2014 (PDT)

That's a pretty vague question, so I don't know what to say. Maybe you can look at WindBOT's source code if that helps. WindBOT is actually not wiki-specific, so you can actually use it for your own wiki without having to rewrite it. You just need to write the appropriate filters and enter the right configuration, and it should work. Here's some documentation on how to write filters as well. — Wind 00:10, 14 July 2014 (PDT)

Adding more languages to translate

Hi Wind.I am really fond of the translation that the wiki has but to let you know many people here in Greece play Team Fortress 2.So I think that adding greek in the translations could be a good idea and also other greek wiki users could contribute into translating every page into greek.I have already contributed to the stub articles but I think that I could help with translations too. I hope you take that in mind. GreekSpy.

There's been multiple requests to add languages in the past, and the policy is that we only add support for them if Valve adds support for it in TF2. That's a good signal that a lot of players want to play the game in that language, which usually ensures enough wiki editors to keep the translated version of the wiki up-to-date as time goes on. If you can convince Valve that there's an audience for this first, then the wiki will follow — Wind 16:18, 2 August 2014 (PDT)

Srcdemo2 (Mac)

I was running this last night, and it crashed on internal frame 65331/Render frame 2048. Should I assume this is one of the issues with the Mac version and run this in bootcamp, or is this issue fixable? TF2 crashed with an error I forgot to capture, though I do have the crash log. Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 07:38, 15 September 2014 (PDT)

There's no way for me to answer this question with so little information to go on. Please post a debug mode log on the issue tracker. Subpages in Missing translations

Hai, in the missing translations, e.g. the Russian one, subpages like Bla/de/transcript are inserted in every missing translation list.
It's possible to fix this, but I think we should move the pages to Bla/transcript/de and so on. We did this already for pages like Mann Co. Supply Crate/Active series/de.
{ TidB | t | c | wt } 07:06, 16 September 2014 (PDT)

Banned from the IRC ?

Hello there Wind,

I was trying to join the IRC for a while now and only now realised I got banned from it. I don't know or understand why this happened. I haven't done anything wrong. I didn't post anything wrong either. The last thing I did was asking for some help about the Weapon Demonstration Project. I don't think I deserved it.

I'm telling this to you because you are a moderator so maybe you know something about it. If I did something wrong, could you tell me what it was ? I would really appreciate it if I could get unbanned because I really don't understand how or why it happened. I mean, I didn't break any of the rules as far as I know.

Thank you for your time. I really hope you can do something about it. Tenacious TacoTenacious Taco 16:18, 17 September 2014 (PDT)

I wasn't the one who banned you so I don't know what happened. Try joining #tfwiki-staff and saying the above there (and say "~staff" which should get everyone's attention) — Wind 22:30, 17 September 2014 (PDT)

I can't join it either. It says I'm banned too :/

I also tried to join other IRCs from other games or tried other names but I just can't access to them. It keeps saying I'm banned...

Maybe I have a problem with the IRC in general, not just #tfwiki. Damn...

Just in case, here's what the IRC tells me:

The only ban currently set in #tfwiki-staff is for someone named "mckay". If you can't join any channel then yes there's some bigger problem. You should ask in #freenode. If you can't join #freenode, then set your client to join no channel at all and type "/stats p" which should list some freenode operators you can send private messages to. — Wind 22:47, 17 September 2014 (PDT)

Missing translations

Hai, could you exclude disambiguations pages and the WebAPI articles from the missing translations page (or create an alternative one)? Yes, but why is it a problem that saxxy is capitalized? That's how it should be IMO. If it shouldn't just for consistency with the other headers then I think it's the other headers that should follow suit unless there's a good reason to have lowercase headers. — Wind 00:15, 18 October 2014 (PDT)

Additional filter for windbot

If you could have windbot change Steam profile link into the more oft-used Steamid, that would be nice. The regex is something like:

Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 11:11, 3 October 2014 (PDT)

Bot request

I think you haven't gotten enough requests, so I'd like to ask if I could create an alternate account with bot rights. This would be useful for this here, namely updating those lists every 24 hours or so and requesting 500 pages at once to make things a bit faster. I'm not expecting to get this running in the next few days or weeks, just asking in advance. Thanks. { TidB | t | c | wt } 17:16, 17 October 2014 (PDT)

I strongly suggest implementing this as a WindBOT filter such that it can be enforced both now and in the future. If you've already implemented it in some other language to a point where you think reimplementing it as a WindBOT wouldn't be worth the investment, then think again; the more bots we have, the less likely they will all run, and a non-open-source bot will most certainly die when its owner does (figuratively). If you still think it isn't worth the investment to reimplement it, then please publish the source code on the wiki itself (even if you have it up on a github account or whatnot) such that it is preserved for as long as the wiki exists. — Wind 00:15, 18 October 2014 (PDT)
Yup, the page I mentioned says the code will be available later. Alright, as I said, this'll take some time so I have some time to think about the options. { TidB | t | c | wt } 04:56, 18 October 2014 (PDT)
Hm, I don't think filters are suited for this, as I want to do something similar to BOTzement; reviewing pages and creating lists of them, not applying changes on reviewed pages. { TidB | t | c | wt } 06:09, 18 October 2014 (PDT)
Alright, then how about adding the code to BOTzement instead? — Wind 14:26, 18 October 2014 (PDT)

When you tell me exactly what you want I think we can implement it. You decide whether it's worth it to rewrite everything, especially since you normally don't use PHP iirc. Might be easier to stay in Python and add it to WindBOT who already has a variaty of tasks, I don't think it hurts anyone when WindBOT creates some Wiki Reports aswell. Advice with a template

Hello Wind. Can you please give me a little advice? I'm really interested on update the Current Events template (the Spanish one), because in a month it's almost one year since the last event that appears on our Main Page. What's better? Put the actual "current events" as the old ones and translate the latest or move the actual events to the old section and translate all the news since the one of the December 4, 2013? (The last option it's gonna take a while :P) Thanks in advance for your time! :) --Andaluz1 · Leaderboard class spy.png · +Kill me... -Later 15:11, 8 November 2014 (PST)

The problem with the first option is that it'll make it non-obvious that there are some events missing on the Spanish page, so I think it's better to translate everything. That's what it should be in the end anyway. If you don't feel like doing it all, translate the oldest untranslated one so that the gap isn't as large anymore, which means others are then in turn more likely to pick up the slack. — Wind 23:11, 8 November 2014 (PST)
Thanks a lot Wind :) I've added the newest events to the template (I'll translate the old ones too, but I prioritized the newest) and I've changed the template to have the Current events like the other wikis (with only the new events on the Main Page) so far I didn't broke anything :P Have a nice day. ^-^ --Andaluz1 · Leaderboard class spy.png · +Kill me... -Later 04:09, 9 November 2014 (PST)

Audio File Upload Errors

So far, the most recent bunch of voicelines have been uploaded and transcribed. However, I've been sitting on a couple dozen audio files for a while because the Wiki simply refuses to let me upload them. Last Halloween I was unable to upload files larger than 2MB. This Halloween, the uploader now refuses to accept anything larger than 1MB. Most recently, I've been getting the error: "413 Request Entity Too Large".

In addition, several files get a different error: "Cannot upload due to files of the MIME type "application/x-php" are not allowed to be uploaded."

I've re-extracted the .wav files using GCFScape (updated to the most recent version), but it still gives an upload error.

Would it help to send you the files to verify this? User Upgrade Signature.png 00:35, 10 November 2014 (PST)

Please upload some elsewhere and post the link here. — Wind 00:39, 11 November 2014 (PST)
Here is a link to a .zip file. All files have been freshly extracted again with the newest version of GCFScape. They come from a variety of updates and have different error messages. Checking "Ignore All Warnings" does nothing.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/qc9o6zn4a3agenq/Missing_lines_examples.zip
Sf14_merasmus_round_start_short_03.wav, Scout_taunt_nun_81.wav, Sf13_blutarch_win06.wav - Files of the MIME type "application/x-php" are not allowed to be uploaded.
Sf14_merasmus_round_return_23.wav (1.69MB) - 413 Request Entity Too Large
Sf13_mannbros_argue21.wav (2.18MB) - This file is bigger than the server is configured to allow.
Last year, I was able to upload most files up to 2MB. The uploader notified me that only files up to 2MB can be uploaded. This year, it appears that the limit has been lowered to 1MB.User Upgrade Signature.png 09:54, 11 November 2014 (PST)
First error has been taken care of. I just disabled the check. It's never worked right for things like .dem files anyway, and it's a poor defense measure.
Second error is due to the server having been switched to nginx and reconfigured with a smaller upload limit. MediaWiki I believe knows how to detect Apache's max file size and then caps the file size it shows on the Upload page to that, but it can't do the same for nginx, so it just shows its own internal limit of 2 MB.
Third error is expected given the current configuration.
I think we should get all limits raised to 64 MB or so. — Wind 18:54, 12 November 2014 (PST)
Alright, I fixed the links for the sound files with the MIME errors. Unfortunately, most of the missing sound files fall under the category of being too large for the uploader. When the is the file size limit expected to be raised? User Upgrade Signature.png 17:46, 14 November 2014 (PST)

Why the bot is changing brl to bri? [2] — The preceding assigned comment was added by Tark {Finish Him!Contribs} 16:02, 18 October 2015 (PDT)

Because that's what its code is set to do with data it gets from the API (Search for 'bri' on User:WindBOT/Filters#Update_game_prices). It's not changing what's there, it's overwriting it with whatever it thinks should be there without caring about what's already on the dictionary.
The reason there was brl on the dictionary is because those entries were manually added by humans. I assume this was done because Valve broke the store API so the bot didn't update prices for a while until I fixed it, but the country codes have not changed AFAIK. — Wind 20:15, 21 October 2015 (PDT)

Question about video editing

Hey. About 3 years ago I tried to do a item demonstration and it failed miserably, but I want to try to do some more again after midterms end. I have all the tools needed to record and a nice enough computer, but does it matter what video editor I use? I'm currently using Movie Maker, and I'm not sure if it's good enough for item demonstrations. Thanks. Killicon rescue ranger.png Bruss48 (T | C) Killicon sentry3.png 21:20, 4 January 2016 (PST)

It doesn't matter what you use as long as the videos look as good as they need to. Look at existing videos on youtube in the highest resolution as examples. I think it might be hard to get Movie Maker to do as well but feel free to prove me wrong — Wind 08:57, 5 January 2016 (PST)
If Movie Maker isn't good enough, what programs do you recommend? Killicon rescue ranger.png Bruss48 (T | C) Killicon sentry3.png 17:35, 5 January 2016 (PST)
You should ask people who make videos, not me. I think most people use Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere. — Wind 19:55, 10 January 2016 (PST)

An update to Languages and Mw-langlink

I've rewritten these two in Lua, via Module:Languages. The first can be written simply as , the second will involve rewriting MediaWiki:Langlink-ar, MediaWiki:Langlink-cs, etc. with . works fine, there's no longer a need for a special en= named parameter. Fixing the gray boxes in the sidebar

I've tracked down the CSS bug that's causing the grey boxes, it's part of the Vector skin. There's 2 culprits:

1. "background: url(https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/7/74/Leyen_sidebar_background.png) repeat-y #f1f0ef !important"

This gives the 'dark grey' but not the gradient.

2. "background-image: url(https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/0/0f/Portal-break.png)"

This gives the gradient.

Both are in MediaWiki:Vector.css, in the "Leyen skin override". The first is the body{} and the second is #mw-panel div.portal div.body. It looks like just removing those lines (commenting out) had the desired effect. I replicated this through chrome's debug tools:
Inspect -> Find & select the <div class="body"> -> Select styles in the sidebar -> Uncheck all references to 'background image'. Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 12:44, 14 February 2016 (PST)

Thanks! It looks much better. Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 07:57, 19 February 2016 (PST)

Official video for Misfortune Teller (Soundtrack)

I missed this one when it happened because the audio file was in a special folder. Here's the audio and here's the video still. Thanks in advance! Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 19:09, 26 February 2016 (PST)

Someone smart suggested that we build these images using a static image and a div on top of it. Would that work for future images? Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 19:42, 13 March 2016 (PDT)

Bad CSS/JS animations

When I set my browser to my normal size (around 990-1000 pixels wide) while not logged in, the read/edit/history button animation causes the buttons to flip between the first and second lines. You can see this here. Efreak (profile) 18:48, 18 March 2016 (PDT)

Weapon Demonstration Project

Hi, I would like to contribute to the Weapon Demonstration Project, since there's a lot of needed/outdated demonstrations, and the contributors doesn't really seem to be active. Could you add me on Steam so we could discuss this topic later? Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198071907064 Thank you. -- Talk Wiki Pan Contributions 06:06, 25 April 2016 (PDT)

Steam is not a good way to IM me directly most of the time. Try IRC, or just this talk page. — Wind 14:29, 1 May 2016 (PDT)
Alright. So, should I just go to the staff channel next time I visit the IRC, or just the usual #tfwiki? -- Talk Wiki Pan Contributions 08:22, 2 May 2016 (PDT)
If you want to IM me, then IM me, doesn't matter what channels you're in. Or you could just ask questions in the channel, chances are people who are not me know the answer to them anyway. Or you could ask the questions here, or on the project talk pageWind 08:42, 2 May 2016 (PDT)

What's imgpie?

What does imgpie.wrap() do?

Can it be (reasonably) replaced with pure python code?

Darkid « TalkContribs » 13:29, 5 May 2016 (PDT)

In order:
  • imgpie is this pure Python file, which in turn imports this Cython module.
  • imgpie.wrap takes a PIL image object and wraps it into the _imgpie.pie Cython class, which has the CPU-intensive methods to do the blending.
  • It is already pretty close to pure Python code; converting it to Python is pretty straightforward (just remove anything from that file that looks like the Cythony version of a Python construct). However this will make the program much slower. I don't remember how much slower but I do remember that I initially wrote the code in pure Python, so the fact that I undertook the effort to convert it to Cython means it must have been pretty damn slow. Another solution is to offer both pure and nonpure versions of the library. — Wind 19:46, 5 May 2016 (PDT)
What does imgpie actually do for the 3d modelling / hat taking process? Darkid « TalkContribs » 21:22, 5 May 2016 (PDT)
It's the part that takes the white-background and black-background pictures and uses them together to create a transparent-background picture. — Wind 00:05, 6 May 2016 (PDT)

Removing Template:Dictionary/templatecore

None of the strings are used: [3]

The entire dictionary should be deleted, along with whatever WindBOT code you have that updates it.

Item Quality format for zh-hant

Hello, Wind, it's been a while.
There's a favor I want to ask: I want to change all Item Quality Format back to the original version, which is the one that English version is currently using (e.g. "Strange Professional Killstreak Golden Frying Pan", "Vintage Natascha"...etc.). The zh-hant version was "Professional Killstreak Golden Frying Pan (Strange)" (or the version without bracket), and since the STS trans team tends to follow that order, I thought that the zh-hant Wiki should do that too. Problem is, I do not know or forget how to change this setting. I don't think the format setting is inside any part of the Template: Dictionary, so I guess it's inside one of the Infobox template, or it's the setting of the editBOT. Anyway, could you please help me change the Quality format back to the English version, or inform me the location of changing it? Much appreciated :) ~www~ 20:37, 15 October 2016 (PDT)
p.s. Sorry for not joining the WikiCap vote, kind of busy dealing with many things in works. There's not much time left after updating so many outdated zh-hant pages :(

I think these are in Backpack item. Ctrl+F for "strange prefix" and for "Suffix for items with quality", you should find the two spots that have special-casing for zh-hant and that I think need to be edited. I'm not exactly sure that's everything though, so please make sure to double-check in a sandbox before going ahead with the edit, since editing that template will cause basically every page on the Wiki ever to get its cache purged. Good luck~ — Wind 01:05, 16 October 2016 (PDT)
Hey, I think I have changed them successfully, with no templates broken. Thanks for your advices :) ~www~ 17:55, 16 October 2016 (PDT)
That edit looks fine, if you need to make more changes in the future I suggest copying the doc (which has a lot of examples) onto something like User:~www~/Sandbox/zh-hant and verifying that they all look correct. Darkid « TalkContribs » 22:30, 16 October 2016 (PDT)

Another attempt at fixing the title bar

So I'm not really sure what thing it is that broke it, but there's a small Tab-break that overlaps the search bar (the 'a' for me). There's no harm in removing it, it's just a background-image. The HTML element is the

, and since it's a vectorMenu it's probably part of the first block in MediaWiki:Vector.css. It's only a vertical tab break, so I know it won't break the left-hand sidebar, I'm not sure where else in the page this image is used. Darkid « TalkContribs » 12:34, 26 November 2016 (PST)
