Paint Cans are tool items. They are represented by one or two metal cans with a label on the side, filled with paint of its designated color; some of the paint ran down the exterior and created a small puddle. Single cans have a blank label, while double cans have one with the RED logo and the other one with the BLU logo on their labels.
Paint Cans allow players to change the coloring of most cosmetic items. They are available in 29 different colors, and can be purchased from the Mann Co. Store, found via the item drop system, obtained by opening certain Mann Co. Supply Crates, using a Mann Co. Painting Set, received as a bonus item when opening cases, or acquired through either the Trading or Steam Community Market systems.
Two types of Paint Cans exist; single-colored and team-colored. Items painted with single-color paints retain the appearance of one color regardless of the player's team, whereas a team-colored paint switches between RED and BLU variant colors.
Paint can be removed from an item to restore it to its default color by selecting the item in the Backpack and clicking 'Restore'. However, the paint used on the item is not returned to the player.
Certain medals awarded during community tournaments and events have custom paint colors that are automatically applied through the item schema, which display a colored splat when viewed in the backpack and loadout screens, identical to the ones that appear when using a Paint Can. These medals can still be painted with Paint Cans, if the option is enabled. Restoring a re-painted medal reverts it back to its originally applied custom paint colors, removing only the applied Paint Can's colors; the custom colors applied through the item schema cannot be removed.
The Mann Co. Painting Set can be used to receive up to three single-color paints.
The Paint Can colors and names for the Operator's Overalls, Waterlogged Lab Coat, Balaclavas Are Forever, An Air of Debonair, The Value of Teamwork, and Cream Spirit were provided by Mnemo .[1]

Bugs
- When using the
+quickswitch
command to change a user's loadout, painted items are not differentiated from regular items; this means that if a user has multiple painted variants of the same cosmetic, all the variants are ignored (+quickswitch
only shows one entry per item to prevent duplicates taking excessive space) and just one entry appears in the panel.
Trivia
- In late 2010, Valve had entertained the idea of extending the Paint Can feature to weapons.[2]
- The "216-190-216" paint is a reference to the RGB representation of the hue.
- Muskelmannbraun is the German word for "muscleman brown".
- The Über Update added several Paint Can colors that were sampled from the existing player models. "The Value of Teamwork" was sampled from the cross on the Medic's backpack, "Waterlogged Lab Coat" from the Medic's coat, "Balaclavas Are Forever" from the Spy's mask, "An Air of Debonair" from the Spy's suit, and "Operator's Overalls" from the Engineer's overalls.
- "Team Spirit" is based on the team-colored parts of the class icons, while "Cream Spirit" is based on the orange and yellow coloring on the class icons.
- "Balaclavas Are Forever" is a reference to the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever. A balaclava is the type of mask the Spy wears.
- The backpack image for the brown paint can (which can be seen on Mann Co. Catalog) is a screenshot of a brown paint can model. The model is not present in the VPK, but the textures are.
- The paint Zepheniah's Greed is referencing the rich Zepheniah Mann, father of Redmond and Blutarch, the owners of teams RED and BLU, respectively.
- The paint After Eight is based on the brand of after-dinner mint-fondant-filled chocolate-thins called After Eight. The paint hue is identical to the hue of the wrappers for these chocolates.
