— The Sniper on recolored hats
|
” |
Paint Cans are tool items that allow players to change the color scheme of hats. Paint is available in 21 different colors, however only 13 colors are available though the Mann Co. Store. The rest of the colors may only be found via the Item Drop System or by opening various Crates.
Hats can have their paint removed, restoring them to their original color. This can be done in the Backpack by clicking on the item in question and then clicking the Restore button. In doing so however, the Paint Can will not be returned to the player.
Valve has stated via the Steam forums that there are plans to implement painting with weapons, but current development priority rests on increased player interest. [1]
The "Team Spirit" Paint changes the painted item's color depending on the player's team. The listed price for "Team Spirit" is currently as opposed to the regular . It cannot be obtained via random drops, however it is found in Crate series #7.
The "Pink as Hell", "A Color Similar to Slate", "Drably Olive", "The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime", "The Color of a Gentlemann's Business Pants" and "Dark Salmon Injustice" paint cans cannot be bought in the Mann Co. Store, and can only be obtained through Crates Series #9.
Paintable item previews
The following pages display previews of items painted with Paint Cans. Hover over any image to display the name of the paint that was used. Popular tendencies for hat coloring can also be viewed at tf2stats.net.
- Note: Images may not exactly match the examples depicted here, as in-game lighting conditions may vary. For team-colored items, the RED model skin has been used, meaning that the painted item may appear differently when worn on the BLU team (with the exception of Team Spirit paint, in which both the RED and BLU versions are displayed).

Update history
- Added Paint
- [Undocumented] Added message for DirectX 8 users on painted hats that paint will not display correctly on their system
- Hats can now have their paint removed.
- Added Team Spirit paint.
- Fixed an issue where team colored hats were showing up improperly when previewing the Team Spirit paint on them.
- Many hats have had their appearance while painted improved. Paintable hats should now appear less like solid blobs of color and retain more of the character and texture of the hat.
- Made the following items paintable: Sergeant's Drill Hat, Pyro's Beanie, Dangeresque, Too?, Whiskered Gentleman, Safe'n'Sound, Trophy Belt, Frenchman's Beret, Camera Beard, Max's Severed Head, Alien Swarm Parasite, Ellis' Cap, and the Horrific Headsplitter.
- [Undocumented] Added 6 new Paint colors. ("Pink as Hell", "A Color Similar to Slate", "Drably Olive", "The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime", "The Color of a Gentlemann's Business Pants" and "Dark Salmon Injustice").
Bugs
- Zephaniah's Greed is misspelled; it should instead say "Zepheniah's Greed".
- When using the +quickswitch command to change a users load-out, painted items are not differentiated from regular items; this means that if a user has multiple painted variants of the same hat, all the variants are ignored (they're treated as duplicates) and just one entry appears in the +quickswitch panel.
Trivia
- The "216-190-216" in the name of Color No. 216-190-216 is the RGB representation of the color.
- Muskelmannbraun is German for "Muscleman brown".
- Painted items do not work under DirectX 8; they will be the ordinary colored item instead. When running the game under DirectX 8, the item descriptions for the Paint Cans as well as the "carrying" descriptions for other players' painted items will warn the player of this fact. Painted items also have red text beneath the item's description stating, "Paint will not be visible on your computer (DX9+ required)".
