Mann Co. Supply Crates are tool items obtainable only through the item drop system. They can only be unlocked by using Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, which are only purchasable at the Mann Co. Store for the price of .
When unlocked, the crate yields one of the items listed in its series and is then removed from the player inventory. The crate cannot be crafted, or be used to craft things such as Scrap Metal. Mann Co. Supply Crates are released in series at the rate of one per week, and it is possible to have a random drop of any series number. Opening a crate is often a gamble for players due to the wide range of contents, although the chance of receiving a hat is fairly high (20-25% approx).
When a crate is opened with a key, a 5 second timer ticks down, alongside a sound effect of chains jangling and hinges creaking. The item inside is announced to the server in a similar format to regular dropped items.

Use in Trading
It has become exceptionally common for crates to be used as currency or "padding" for high-yield trades - most often for hats or other rare items - due to the chances of getting an even rarer item from one of them. Adding one or two crates to your offer will usually tip things in your favor, especially if your trading partner buys keys regularly or knows someone who does.
Some users have been known to stockpile massive amounts of crates for either opening or trading away. Offering a Supply Crate to these people will likely benefit you more than most others, so keep an eye out for those seeking crates in large quantities.
