Haunted Metal Scrap is obtainable in-game (but only with the Unusual rarity) as part of the Scream Fortress Update. To obtain this item, you must land at least one of the killing blows on the Horseless Headless Horsemann with a melee weapon. If you manage to land a blow before the Horsemann is killed, you will not receive the achievement or Haunted Metal Scrap, regardless if you remained alive. You can only find a single Unusual Haunted Metal Scrap, because it is linked to an achievement (Gored!). Simply attacking the Horseless Headless Horsemann with a melee weapon will not yield additional Unusual Haunted Metal Scraps after obtaining the achievement. The metal is not tradable, unless Gift Wrapped and then sent to another player. The Unusual Haunted Metal Scrap is used to craft the Unusual Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker, and/or the Halloween themed hats released in the Scream Fortress Update.

- You can still obtain the "Gored!" achievement if you melee the Horseless Headless Horsemann and are killed in the process.
- Some Unusual Haunted Metal Scraps found in the first few days were tradable, possibly as the result of a bug.
- It is possible to have more than 1 Haunted Metal Scrap by Gift Wrapping it.
- These recipes will still be active after the Halloween event has ended, the "Gored!" achievement, however, will be disabled.
