Mann. Co Supply Crates are tool items obtainable only through the item drop system. They can only be unlocked by using Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, which are only purchasable at the Mann Co. Store for the price of $2.49/£1.99/€2.49.
When unlocked, the crate yields one of the items listed in its series and is then removed from the player inventory. Dropped crates do not count as part of the weekly drop cap. The crate drops are managed by a completely independent drop timer according to Robin Walker. This item cannot be crafted, or be used to craft things such as Scrap Metal. Mann Co. Supply Crates are released in series at the rate of one per week, and it is possible to have a random drop of any series number. Opening a crate is a gamble, often resulting in one weapon. You may receive an unusual hat, or maybe just another Equalizer.
When a crate is opened with a key, a 5 second timer ticks down, alongside a sound effect of chains jangling and hinges creaking. The item inside is announced to the server as "%playername% has uncrated: %itemname%".

Exceedingly Rare Special Items
An 'Exceedingly Rare Special Item' found in a crate may be a random hat with the 'Unusual' quality. These Unusual hats can also be traded, unlike their normal in-game store counterparts. Unusual items have purple-colored names with a random 'super rare' particle effect. The 'Exceedingly Rare Special Item' can also be another crate.
